Fletch, are you ever not a dick? Just curious.
Its five o'clock somewhere.
Byrd has to get cancer before Fletch will rip on him.
Unless Appling and Harris play 40 a game, Byrd will play.
It's a musical chairs kind of thing:
Appling needs a breather? Valentine comes in.
Harris at the 2
Dawson at the 3
Payne/Nix at the 4/5
Then Valentine is also taking over backup 2/3 duties when Appling is back in. If you don't play Byrd, you're asking him to be the sole backup for 3 positions. I doubt a freshman has the stamina and a grasp of the system to play better than a fresh Byrd after about 30 minutes of game time.
This team can't go 6 deep.
Theoretically, Payne and Nix can play up to 73 minutes. But that's beyond pushing it. An optimistic expectation is 65 on average between them.
Dawson can only really be counted on for 30 minutes. Conditioning is still an issue due to no off-season, and I don't think he would be as effective if he had to conserve his energy.
Appling, at this point, you can play him 38.
Valentine can add minutes, we'll just say 30 to stay conservative.
We have no clue how healthy Gary Harris is right now. Let's just say hypothetically he can play 30 minutes.
Yeah, that only leaves 7 minutes for Gauna/Costello/Byrd. But that's an ideal scenario. Someone will get in foul trouble. Matchup problems will prevent Payne from playing a ton of 4 minutes. Some games Byrd may play 2 minutes, some games he may play 10. If Harris isn't healthy, we'll see a lot of Byrd, and some Wetzel/Chapman.
I have no doubt that Russell's heart is all-in for the team. He needs to take this to his play. This is mere conjecture, I'm only an observer, but but I can see him as a guy that is afraid to miss his shot and over thinks his responses to situations. Maybe that lack of flow in his game can be overcome if while playing he focuses less on the results he produces and more on the people around him. Does this even make sense?
Sure. But you do realize Izzo isn't going to get by with a 6 man rotation, right? Byrd is going to see a lot more time.
But you do realize that the original premise of your dumb ass thread, specifically that Byrd will be "the key to our conference title chances if Trice is out a while." is wrong, right?
Maybe it will be like Linsanity only for gingers.
I'm having trouble believing this considering this Byrd fellow hasn't taken an in-game shot in the last 2 weeks and has taken a total of 3 in-game shots since Christmas. This lack of confidence along with the knee issue just doesn't make these expectations realistic. Looking forward to seeing more of Valentine though.
A Spartan Today, A SPARTAN FOREVER. Through thick and thin, low and high water I strive to be the best Spartan ever.
No need to be dick.
I do think if Trice is out an extended period of time Bryd will be the key to our title chances. This team won't have the legs to beat out UM and IU with a 6 man rotation. The three subs with any real chance of contributing are Byrd, Costello and Gauna. The latter two aren't going to be added to a lineup with Payne, Nix and Dawson. Byrd is the key.
So no, I don't think my premise is wrong - if Trice is out an extended period of time, we'll need Bryd to help stay with the conference leaders.
Ginsanity is long overdue.
1: Appling 35 mins; Valentine 5 mins
2: Harris 30; Valentine 10
3: Dawson 20; Valentine 15; Byrd 5
4: Payne 20; Dawson 10; Gauna/Costello 10
5: NIx 30; Payne 10
Six guys could get 30 mins a game without significant increased contribution from Byrd/Costello/Gauna, but chances are we will see some foul trouble and at least one of those guys is going to have to step up. Valentine in particular fouls at too high of a rate to assume 30 mins is reasonable. I think Byrd is inevitably going to have to start seeing more minutes.
These days I believe in the power of positive thinking so here I go....
Any one that watched the game last night, he did not hurt us once with a turn over or his man didn't score on him in the second half.
Also his body language looked a lot better than earlier in the season.
IMO, I'm going to see the power of coach Izzo transform this kid into a decent player. Lets go Russel!

Fixed it for you...
It's Byrd time! Let's show some muscle, Russell!
That is fine in theory until foul trouble changes all of that. We have had foul trouble the last 2 games involving the guards.
Outside of optimistic wishful thinking, has he given Spartan fans ANY reason thus far to believe that he can be a reliable contributor on the court?
Of course you COULD play a rotation of 6 guys, but what condition they'd be in at the end of the game is the question. This team has been showing signs of fatigue in late game situations because Izzo can't afford to go very deep into his bench. Payne was exhausted last night and getting killed on the defensive boards in the last 5 minutes. After playing great D all game on Sunday, Nix let Zeller go right around him twice - and there was no help from equally tired teammates. And as Izzo said "Our guard situation right now is not good."
No. And neither did Austin Thorton for about 3.5 seasons.
I think you may be right, Russell's current game reminds me of Tin Cup on the practice tee hittin' chili pepper shanks. Hopefully he can be cured.
You ain't thinking about shanking,
you ain't thinking about the
doctor lady, you ain't thinking
period. You just lookin' like a
fool and hittin' it pure -- your
That's because Nix sucks.
Byrd sure gets a lot of pub for somebody who has 3 points in the last 11 MSU games.
I prefer the reality train.
Currently, Byrd is averaging 5.7 minutes in the 7 B1G games he's played. He is averaging 8.9 minutes for the season with the majority of those minutes in a 4 game stretch vs Texas Southern, Oakland, BSU and LA-LAF.
I don't see him averaging 10 minutes in the games Trice will be out.
