ND won with an average offense, a great defense, a relatively friendly schedule and some really good bounces. We're halfway to that equation even after terrible 2012.
I know, I know, Roushar, Maxwell, blah blah blah. With a year under his belt and experience in close games, Maxwell has a great opportunity to bounce back. And Roushar's offense doesn't need to be spectacular, it just needs to be average - like ND's. I don't think he's incapable of delivering that.
The last piece is bounces. We got them all last year and none of them this year (until a pass deflection Saturday). The football goes owe us.
Delany would never let us go 13-0, especially now that Meat-Chicken and O$U are both supposedly elite programs.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
ND is just the'02 Buckeyes. Going 12-0 without being a dominate team happens every now and then. But the biggest reason we don't go undefeated next year may just be the game @ND.
MSU, UM, and USC weren't nearly as good as people thought they were going to be. Oklahoma really hasn't been great either. Add in the cupcakes and their schedule wasn't all that tough. But yeah, friendly isn't the most accurate term.
ND beat 9 bowl-eligible teams... Alabama and Georgia combined to play 11
OK might win the Big12 and Stanford might win the Pac 12. ND beat them both.
Pre-season expectations were right to consider ND's schedule to be ridiculously hard. But most of their opponents went from BSC contenders to average squads. Don't get me wrong, they played some quality opponents, especially by ND's normal standards. But they didn't exactly face a gauntlet and were lucky to survive some games against bad opponents.
Miami also finished in a tie for first for their division and would've gone to the ACC Title game had it not been for their self-imposed bowl ban
Why can't we? We play in an actual conference with good teams week after week, and also have a conference championship game to get through.
Wouldn't have gotten us to the National Championship, though. Nice try.
BECAUSE STARS MATTER!!!
The B1G is turrible lately. Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, Purdue, etc. etc.
In fact, playing in the B1G gives us an unfair advantage because if we go undefeated and win our crappy conference we are pretty much guaranteed a NC game berth.
Don't post poop!
It looked way harder in the pre-season..
UM/MSU were average, USC wasn't good.. beat Stanford on bad call- struggled with Pitt.. @OU was solid..
But really their schedule wasn't that hard at all
never drinking the kool aid or blowing sunshine out my ass ever again....Im going into every season thinking we are a 7-5 team
To die in ann arbor is redundant
So you really, honestly think that we'll go undefeated next year? Look, I'm all for blowing, but I'm also a realist. Michigan is not going to be as bad as some people may think. Gardner at QB scares me infinitely more than DRob ever did. And having them at the end of a 5-game stretch isn't exactly easy. We still have at NEB and at NW after that.
CAN we do it? Sure. I'd love to. WILL we? That's where I say no. Sorry.
I'm arguing against Fletch's notion that we'll go undefeated and go to the NC. Isn't that what this thread is for? That's what both my posts have been about. Don't see how you could have misinterpreted that.
Got me. I gotta be more careful.
What happens when Nebraska wins the rose bowl?
how do we even know that the nd of 2013 is going to be any good?
Because we're going to be it. God!
They get a trophy to bring back to their football building.
If MSU went 12-0 against the schedule ND had, this board would be calling it one of toughest schedules in MSU history
Sounds about right...
