Someone has to beat out hill next year if msu is going to be successful. Nick hill is not a big ten rb. If he is our starter, our run game will be a joke.
Spartan Rocky, Since my gross oversight on Tony Lippet. How do you see him being used next year. I personally would rather have him at DB for depth.
I would love to see Drummond and Williamson on the field together somehow. Drummond had an outstanding season and Williamson showed he can make plays when he's in.
We really can't afford to waste our talent with the same stagnant depth chart that didn't work this year. Arnett and Burbridge should be starting at WR with Madaris and Kings also seeing time. Lippett can move back to DB and Fowler/Mumphery can fight to split reps. Put Arnett or Kings back to return punts as well.
Sometimes this loyalty/seniority thing is really frustrating. Hill never should have been returning punts, our starting WRs should have been in limbo after the ND game instead of 3/4 of the way through the season, etc. Hopefully it's not the same story next year. If we don't let players compete for jobs at QB, WR, RB, KR, PR, OL it could be another long season.
I'd like to see him get a bit stronger and really be that go to guy over the middle. At 6'3, he should be able to shield defenders from the ball on slants and be a go-to guy on 3rd down. He hasn't been a good blocker this year and seems to be a bit nervous going over the middle. He's pretty skinny at 190; would like to see him at 205 or so.
I think he'll also be the go-to gadget guy as well. Don't love him on end arounds/reverses because I don't think he's got elite speed (just from observation, Mumphery and Burbridge are faster), but the wildcat QB who can actually throw? Like him in that role a lot.
The WRs as a whole need to get better at blocking; I think that's a big reason why the bubble screens weren't used much this year.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
next year. If we don't let players compete for jobs at QB, WR, RB, KR, PR, OL it could be another long season ( and OC )
By definition, the job of the OC is to take the sum of the parts and pieces of the offense and game plan accordingly. During the game, he should make proper adjustments based on defenses, game situations, weather conditions, injuries etc.......A skilled QB can often make an average OC look very good. The opposite is also true.
In my opinion, our OC had a poor season.
Why should Arnett be starting at WR next year? My issue here is that you're assuming that these guys haven't been competing this year, and that the more experienced guys were just handed the position.
Burbridge forced his way into a starting role by playing well in practice. If nothing else, I think that shows that PT is given based on merit.

That may be part of why they didnt run it as much, but I also think Maxwell doesnt seem to make that specific pass quickly enough, for whatever reason. Each time, he gets the snap, turns his body, has to set his feet, then goes into a long windup so he can wing it. The ball seems to take a loooooooong time to get out there. With Cousins, it seemed to get there alot faster, giving the WR more time to shake/bake.
#7 Tyler O'Connor will be QB2 at the end of spring practice. QB1 at the end of fall camp & at the end of season 2013 will be forever known as "Touchdown Tyler" You heard it here first!
I heard whispers several times this season that the best QB in practice was O'Connor. But as Allen Iverson would say, "We're talkin bout practice"
I heard the same thing about Maxwell as a Freshman from someone that was very close to that team. Not saying that he's not, but it made me feel like I can't listen to anyone without seeing it with my own eyes.
Yea, I'm trying to go on the eye-test as much as possible. Didn't we hear how there'd be little drop-off from Gholston/Rush to Calhoun/Heath? The latter two didn't play much. I won't believe any improvements on the passing O until I see it.
Thing about Maxwell that's sort of different is the amount of time he spent as pretty much just a practice player. I wonder what effect if any, that had on him when he was actually "the guy" after 3 years mostly on the sideline.
Yea!! If you haven't produced immediately you'll never produce

I don't believe anything....recruiting, coach speak, great practice players, etc. until I see it on the field anymore.
Why hasn't Arnett done the same? Every time he's seen the field he's got open and caught the ball. That's exactly how Burbridge forced his way into the lineup, he made plays when he had the opportunity. The word all year has been that Arnett has practiced well. Yes I'm assuming but he offers what we don't have. He's fast, elusive and catches the ball. Our WRs don't separate and when you have a bad and roughed up OLine, that's a recipe for disaster. It's a shame we didn't red shirt him. At very least he should have been returning punts. The only reason to have Hill or Sims back there is to not burn a RS on Kings or Arnett and instead we started inferior talent and burned 2 red shirts. I've never been critical of anything Dantonio has done but Arnett is a complete mystery. As many have speculated, it likely has to do with attitude but I'm not sure how bad it can be that you accept what we've seen and keep a top 2 WR on the bench while burning his RS.
That is not true.
1) No, Arnett has dropped balls
2) Burbridge came in, caught 2 passes vs. CMU. He didn't play against ND, EMU or tOSU. His next action was against IU, where he was elevated as a starter based on his performance in practice.
3) The "Top 2 WR" theme is based on recruiting rankings. Arnett may live up to the hype, but he's just not there yet.
I think Lippett stays at WR. Some want him to move back to CB, but I think he's more of a natural WR, and I think he can make things happen with the ball in his hands.
Will be interesting to see what happens with Cox, since Drummond and Williamson look good.
Position change thought...we have a ton of LB's, especially with Jones looking like a stud, Bullough and Lyles coming on, Shane Jones/Reschke/Byron Bullough coming in...how about Darien Harris at RB? I think he played it on the scout team some, and in HS obviously. If Bell leaves, of course...

A few random thoughts:
1) I don't think Terry redshirts anymore. The staff knows that it has to find an effective in game QB. I think you're gonna see a QB battle in the spring between all three. Terry is going to get some snaps in the fall. I'd almost be willing to put money on it. Our QB situation is very fluid.
2) If Arnett doesn't get some PT, you've gotta wonder why the staff refuses to play him. He's got talent, and anyone with eyes who has seen this team play knows that our WRs are awful.
3) Tompkins/Holmes=Baker/Bell 2010
France is LT, I think Kicker competition could be interesting, but Muma will probably win that one out. He darn near beat out Conroy a couple years back. I like how that defense looks
If maxwell is not the starter, I think the Coaches are going to make a choice and get that guy the most reps possible before we play nd next year. Barring some terrible games, I don't see a lot of qb switching going on.
we COULD see Terry come in for redzone situations though. it wont require him to know much of the playbook and will be a dangerous weapon.
