I'm not crazy about LeBatard either (like his Papi though). But when you know personally the pain that your friends and relatives have suffered at the hands of a dictator like Castro, the least we can do is have a bit of empathy.
Le Batard has admitted many times that he has no interest in thinking rationally about Cuba. That's fine for him, I guess. It seems operatic and weird and counterproductive. But they are his experiences - more precisely, his parents' and grandparents' experiences - so he can process them any way he pleases.
But the problem is that Le Batard is not content to work out these feelings for himself; he wants to determine how the rest of us approach the issue. He is quite open here about his plan to have everyone else feel - not think - about Cuba as well. And I'm sorry, but I won't do that for anyone.
description goes here
Perhaps LeBatard didn't realize that his parents were lying to him, and Fidel is just an eccentric, baseball-loving good buy.
Thank you, Denicos.
Eee....You're conflating your original argument by bringing in the 'gospel' of a rape accuser.
Let's not go there.
Instead, I totally get where you're coming from in that Ozzie's words were offensive to many. Ozzie is one guy who said (probably with sarcasm) something outlandish because that's who he is. He's all talk. It's ridiculous (to me) that people are getting worked up about something someone SAID.
I'm coming from a place where I think words only have as much power as the power you give them.
That's quite a stretch you're making there. Are you one of the "the holocaust never happened" people as well?
Guinness makes you drop mud.
Oh. So we've moved on from you threatening to beat my ass by father-in-law proxy?
If you are seriously going to say that the memory of homeland and personal loss is not at the center of politics in Miami, than we have nothing to discuss. Think very hard before you do that, however, because we both know it's an insupportable position.
I find it weird that you keep on encouraging me to say stuff to people's faces. You are weirdly obsessed with faces. But the problem is, this is the internet, and it's just the two of us talking. There are no faces.
Finally, I don't share your offense at this word "alleged," as it simply means asserted without evidence.
miser, don't waste your breath. have you seen the posts over in wells hall? these people aren't playing with a full deck and they are totally talking out of their asses.
Everyone here can agree the Ozzie is a certifiable nutcase.
But the Cuban climate in Miami is one he better become accustomed to quickly. One doesn't go into an NCAAP meeting displaying a racist attitude downplaying that atrocities committed during the Jim Crow era were non existent.
I'm thinking he might have a bit of backlash if that were the case.
Ozzie's also gotten into a bit of trouble supporting Hugo Chavez in the past.
Ozzie Guillen Says Crazy Shit: Pro-Dictator Edition: Ozzie Guillen loves Fidel Castro, may or may not support Hugo Chvez, and ...
Did you read the attached paragraphs? It's not a stretch at all. He openly says: don't think about this rationally.
This was fuggin funny. Really funny.
Is one of us in Wells? I am not, I assure you.
okay, sorry about that. do you personally know any cubans that lived under castro and escaped? it's not a myth that there was torture and firing squads. it's a fact. remember the hanoi hilton? "the cuban" was brought over so that he could share his wonderful torture techniques that he used on the cuban political prisoners. he was pretty good at it.
No no no..,didn't your Socialist prof teach you better than that? Fascist backed by American Imperialism overthrown by the people's own champion: Castro. Revolutions are always messy...Torture, firing squads, and political prisons are just part of the price for massively improving Cuba over the last 50 years.
"We don't care about anything but winning. No one cares about ethical standards thats for losers..."
BUCKNUTS 21 self trolling.
I don't know how folks on this board can disagree about the FACTS here.
1. Ozzie is a loudmouth who frequently says idiotic things, sometimes for effect.
2. Fidel Castro was a brutal, murdering dictator who, no matter your political stripe, should be reviled for that.
3. Cubans in Miami have every right to be indignant with Guillen for his insensitivity and refuse to go to games and even boycott them.
This thread in summary:
Two misinformed people arguing vehemently about things they know nothing about, and various others (unsuccessfully) trying to educate them.
Castro murdered and held/continues to hold Cubans prisoner for years in squander, subject to torture, with no trial, often taken with no word given to the families. He also turned the national psyche paranoid with his block sergeants.
Ozzie was an idiot for saying that. And as a hispanic, he knew damn well what he was doing.
Now, if you want to talk deeper, like about how the mob ran Cuba, who initially fled Cuba, the racism and the role it played, how Castro may have had Ché killed to allow for absolute rule, etc. that is a completely different conversation.
that's the problem with arguing on the interwebs. you don't know if you're talking to somebody who actually knows something or some 18 year old who just had a class with alfred "lash" larue.
Some of these photos are graphic.
okay, this guy knows what he's talking about. batista was pretty cozy with the mob.
As a Chicago native, this doesn't surprise me. On the radio shows today people have basically been saying: We always knew Ozzie couldn't keep his damn mouth shut, but we never knew he was this stupid. I hope he gets fired/fined/something so he learns to act like a grown-up for once.
Standing ovation, sir. I'm out of upvotes, or you'd get one from me.
Do you guys get this worked up about Somoza? What about Pinochet? Peronism? Ortega? Médici? Duarte?
And if you do not get as worked up about those folks as you get worked up about Castro, I think that demands an explanation.
Or perhaps he's just seen The Godfather Part II.
We get it. Everything is "alleged," meaning (to you) unproven fact, unless you see it with your own eyes.
My guess is that when you see it with your own eyes, you say it's been Photoshopped. There's no convincing you. Got it.
I am quite convinced that you did not read the message you quoted, as your response has nothing to do with it.
My question was about selective outrage. It was a fairly straightforward point.
