Six rose bowls...94 99 00 11 12 13
In my bar there is only 1 hot chick and it isn't rose. the rest are all the same.

Honest question. Does anyone think we'll make it to a Rose Bowl sometime in the next few years?
I think we've got a decent shot over the next two years considering the talent and the schedule but in some ways it almost feels like a ticking clock in that while it still won't be impossible by any means after that it will start getting that much harder in future years with Meyer at OSU and with what now appears to be at least 4 more teams in the conference, MSU's road will not get much easier.
It really is amazing when you think about it even schools like Illinois, Northwestern and Purdue have found their way into the Rose Bowl over the last 25 years but even when MSU has had good or great seasons... 99, 10, 11 something has stood in their way.
I'd say Alvarez, probably.

Does anyone know what happens with the 2014 schedule with Rutgers and Maryland joining? Might we get a new, presumably harder, schedule? I figured they were going to redraw all the schedules and might bump to nine game schedule. Another way we get screwed over by the whole thing.
It could be what we have now, plus wusconsin and illinois. Probably won't be seeing PedSU or o$u too often. Not too different, really.
This. Wisconsin was so horrid before Barry Alvarez came along. Wisconsin and Northwestern were definitely the bottom feeders of the league back then.
With MSU's recent bad luck with the Rose Bowl, you can pretty much call State a lock to win the Big Ten next year.
My Whiskey Blog
until this year every Badger team that went to the Rose Bowl was legitimate. This season that had the good fortune to meet a Nebraska team that crapped the bed so early and often even a Big Ten Officials crew couldn't bail out the hapless Huskers.
Posters were knocking Beilema for pouring it on but he doesn't live in a bubble. Beilema was smart to pile on the points so there could be no 4th quarter Big Ten magic that could take away their win.
Since MSU won the Rose Bowl they haven't been the paragon of stability. Wasn't Perles and/or his agent in contact with the Packers within a week of that last Rose Bowl? Then a few years later he was talking to the NY Giants. That was raw meat for other team's recruiters.
Perles get replaced by Saban after the 1994 season. Saban leaves after almost 5 years then Bobby Williams for almost 3 years, John L Smith for 4 seasons and finally Dantonio since 2006.
MSU has had 5 HC's since that Rose Bowl team. Post Perles, Dantonio has lasted longer than the others.
Wisky 4 (Hilles (1) after the death of McClain, Morton (3). Alvarez 16) who hand picked Beilema for HC after '05. 22 years of Alvarez/Beilema 6 Rose Bowls since '87
OSU 4 Earl Bruce (1 season), John Cooper (13) , Tressel (10) Fickell (1/caretaker) Meyer
umaa 4 Schembechler (4) Moeller(5) Carr (8) Rodriguez (3) Hoke All but rr from the Schembechler tree.
You would think back to back 11 win seasons we would at least get a BCS bid....sadly NIU has more BCS appearances than us. We have to go 12-0 to make the Rose Bowl or another BCS game
Was a 19 y/o sophomore. I borrowed money from my brother and used his frequent flier miles to attend.
An awesome experience ... I picked up the tab for a ski trip prolly ten years later, in thanks. ..... First night gamein SS vs us c followed by a rematch ..... Purely awesome
The Rose Bowl used to be a must view for me. Didn't really matter if it was Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio St even Michigan. Now, I'd say it's been 10 years since I've bothered with it, and it looks like I'll find other things to do this NYD. Sad, really.
Wisconsin was bad (not K State bad) prior to Barry. Barry brought the Husker philosophy to Mad town with some swamp fox mixed in. Bret was picked by Barry. Kudos to the person that hired Barry.
Hold your heads up - we've never been closer to the Rose Bowl than this year!
....geographically speaking, that is.
If we go 12-0, I sure as hell hope we're going to the BCS Championship game and not the Rose Bowl.
honestly, a few things.
It started at the top with then Chancellor Donna Shalala, who decided to get rid of higher academic standards (yes, Wisconsin had them) and put Wisconsin on an equal playing field with everyone else in the Big Ten (except Northwestern who still has higher standard). Then she hired Pat Richter and have him a huge bump in money, resources and control and he hired Barry Alverez who brought in a Nebraska mentality to the program. The rest is history.

I dont get it. Wisconsins earned it last year by beating our beloved Spartans in the BTCG. The year before Wisconson also earned it by winning on the field. Not Wisky's fault the tie breaker rules changed.
Also, lets face it. tOSU would have beat MSU in 2011. However, whenever I hear that argument, Wisconsin went to two RBs in the 90s when they shared the title and/or didn't play OSU. Actually, last year may have been the only RB in the past 20 years that Wisky actually won the Big Ten outright lol.

they won outright in 1999.
1993 - won tiebreaker (beat UM, tied OSU, UM beat OSU in last game)
1998 - won tiebreaker after getting crushed by UM but OSU beat UM - Bucky did not play OSU
1999 - won outright. Lost at home to UM then won out, including beating OSU in Columbus
2010 - three way tiebreaker (giggity), lost to MSU but got tiebreak
Yeah. I love how Wisky got their first two Rose Bowls due to the 'not being the last team to go to one' tie breaker. Then in 2010, that rule suddenly changed because the Big Ten coaches went full retard, and they get to go using the polar opposite of what got them there in 93 and 98.
I seriously have never seen a team get so lucky with these tie breakers and rule changes. If not for century old rules that had just changed, Wisky would not have gone to any RBs in the past 3 years. Just unbelievable, stupid, dumb luck.
however, we shouldn't be mad at them, but mad at the system and dumbfvck big ten coaches who did away with the last team to go rule.
Perhaps I focused too much on Wisconsin in my original post, but something about a 7-5 regular season team making a 3rd straight trip when we haven't been there in 25 years just seems...I don't know...demoralizing. I felt the same way when that 9-3 Illinois team went in 2007 (2008 Rose Bowl, the 20th anniversary of our appearance), and they were much more deserving than this Wisconsin team.
We've been so close over those 25 years (and never closer than the past two), certainly we've had seasons that were better than either of those two Rose Bowl squads. Between lingering devastation from Indy last year, and then the sense that the Rose Bowl was just so achievable this year with a down Big Ten, then the realization that it's been 25 freaking years...it's just a lot to soak in. Next year is another huge opportunity with the schedule (after which expansion will probably make it even more difficult and imbalanced and random as far as making a Rose Bowl appearance). I think that's what makes the frustration with the offense feel so URGENT, and why there is such desperation (and anger) towards the offensive coaching staff.
Also, someone posted that they think it's funny that the older folks still care so much about the Rose Bowl. Well, yes...guilty. I was 11 years old for the '88 Rose Bowl (and I've saved the t-shirt that my sister, an MSU student at the time, bought me...she packed it with a bunch of stuff she bought my Mom that was rose scented, so I had a not-so-masculine rose scented Rose Bowl shirt there for awhile). I've been waiting my whole life to go, it's the one event I've always dreamed of attending, and the one sporting event I've always vowed I would attend at virtually any cost. It's more than just a game to me. It's the whole idea of the trip...Pasadena has this glowing dreamlike quality to me through the TV on New Years Day that comes from a lifetime of watching the Rose Parade with the family and seeing Big Ten team's fans in attendance and thinking of the day that would be me. I want to be a part of it with all the Spartans I know. I have family in Southern California, but have purposefully never gone near Pasadena in many visits. I want it to be for the Spartans, in the Rose Bowl. And I swear, when it happens and I'm standing in those stands with the team on the field and the ball about to kick off, it's gonna get a bit dusty in there.
(then we'll probably go offsides on the kickoff and I'll swear at someone)
Gee, that's funny, I seem to remember MSU beating up Ohio State in 2011. Was I dreaming?
Location: Mumbai, India
Well said man. I feel the same way. I was only 2 years old the last time MSU played in Pasadena, and after growing up and living and dying with each MSU team, the Dantonio era brought something I never thought I would live to see.....4 straight wins over Michigan. The 2010 Big Ten Championship was awesome, not getting a BCS bid though, hurt quite a bit, especially since we beat Wisconsin and Ohio State had all their B.S. going on........Last season was an epic dagger to the heart...so close to the Rose Bowl, a game we would have had if not for running into the kicker. Michigan in the Sugar was salt in the wound.....It really does seem like our window is closing, with expansion, and unbalanced schedules on the horizon. I'm never setting foot in the state of California until we get to that game...if we ever do. Hope springs eternal, but I'm disillusioned as hell, and I'm not sure I'm going to live to see us play in that damn game.
The Rose Bowl is a good time. TCU won it and we don't even have the bowl tie in that you Canadians have. Pretty pathetic.
We all were the bottom feeders back then. It was the end of the "Big 2/Little 8" days. They were HORRIBLE!
