Don't mention Taylor and Randolph because they were role players on one Big Ten title team. Cleaves and Peterson were technically not in the same class. This one is the best.
Harris is the real deal. Best Freshman in the country. Best combination of offense and defense that I can remember on MSU in a long time. He is going to be special, I just hope that he sticks around for awhile.
MSU has has a lot of great rebounding guards under Izzo - Bell, Richardson, Thomas, Anderson. Denzel Valentine is the best. He also has amazing vision and is a better than expected shooter and defensive player. He is going to be All Conference in either his Soph or Jr. seasons.
Matt Costello has improved immensely as the year has gone on. He reminds me of Antonio Smith with his ability to attack the defensive glass. Ultimately he has the chance to be a 10 pt / 10 rebound type of guy.
The Freshmen were huge tonight and the program is in amazing shape!
Still mid season
C'mon its mid-Feb. We have had a good look at these guys for 25 games. I am not basing this off of tonight but realize we just laid the wood to the team they were saying had the best group of Freshmen in the country. Valentine and Harris are champs waiting to happen. It might even happen this year.
I gave you a +1 because I love these feshmen. But...try telling Florida that Randolph was a role player when he lit them up for 27 and 7. Many games it was Randolph who was doing much of the crunch time scoring while helping take MSU to the Final Four. Zach averaged 10 point and 7 rebounds per game playing less than 20 minutes per game! More production than either Payne or Nix. Taylor played over 20 minutes per game IIRC, mostly at the point. Don't think for a minute he was just filling in while David Thomas took a rest. Randolph and Taylor were both essentially starters coming off of the bench for most of the season. Both were key cogs for MSU's Final Four team that season.
There is no doubt that Zach was a freak. But Marcus Taylor was not quite as advertised he Frosh season and they were never team leaders. There have been times this season where Harris and Valentine put the team on their back in tandem. They are absolutely the most well rounded Freshmen. That and Matt Costello has come on in a big way the last couple of games. These guys are also doing it in an era of extreme conference competition. This group is special.
Valentine and Harris really stepped up. Harris is not a freshman anymore, he plays with more game savvy than ANY other player on the court. Valentine just needed more minutes, his vision and size really helps.
Harris is very solid. He was having a great time- even on the bench smiling and laughing and being a good team mate.
Charlie Bell logged the most minutes at point that year.
Johnson. Vincent. No other class will ever come close.
Randolph was a role player??
Chris Allen, Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers, and Austin Thornton weren't too bad. Considering that they led us to two Finals Fours and a championship game appearance and all.
Yeah OK, I concede. But I was not old enough to remember that one.
Yes. Offensive force. Got subbed out for Anagonye is all serious defensive situations. Was the fourth leading scorer on the team. Harris will end up leading this team in scoring and Valentine is a triple double waiting to happen. I'm comfortable saying the Johnson/Vincent class is better, but none under Izzo.
I think it was the Hill Anderson, Torbert class that was the best. We lost everybody from the season before and they kept the tourney streak going in a season I dont think anyone really expected anything out of our team.
That was a good class. I hope Harris last four years. I don't think it will end up being close.
All this class needs to do is win B1G titles and the NC. That's the only way they can be better.
You guys are comparing them to the other classes results in their senior years. What class did better in their actual Frosh seasons? None (except probably Johnson/Vincent).
Spartan Basketball @MSU_Basketball
MSU's freshmen accounted for 32 of the team's 75 points (combined 12-of-21 shooting from the floor). #MSUUM
Harris is the key to this team; dude is the total package. Never seen a freshman in the Izzo era with his level of maturity, offensive talent, unselfishness and defensive aptitude. He took it upon himself to completely shut down Hardaway. Not only that, he paced us to our early lead with those silky 3-pointers. He could be scoring 20+ on a lesser team that got him more shots. And all this with a bad back.
Sure hope he stays for one more because he'll be a 1st team AA next year.
I'm not going to compare classes simply because at this point it probably isnt fair to anyone, but without question our freshmen are taking an atomic bomb to the freshman wall.
The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.
Yes he did, but IIRC Taylor played the point most of the time he was on the floor, which was 22 minutes per game. He and Bell averaged the same number of assists per minute that season. Bell played 31 minutes per game that season. I suspect that if we were to look back, we would find that Bell played the point when Taylor was not on the floor and Taylor played the point when Bell was not on the floor, and they both played some point and some 2 when they were both on the floor.
yet Michigan lost because they were playing freshmen
The first time MSU basketball aired in France the French surrendered to Tom Izzo just to be safe.
That was before many current posters were born.
stupid double post.

then don't make sweeping claims you can't support. This group needs to cut down the nets in April before they are in the same club as Magic, Vincent, Mateen, etc.
Harris is mature beyond his years and may be the best all around freshman player in the country and Valentine is a nice role player getting better every week, but Costello hasn't done much of anything and Kaminski is redshirted. The heart of this team is in the previous two classes....it's a fantastic group made up of four solid classes. No one fab 3 or 4 is the reason.
Costello has turned into an absolute stud over the past few games. Obviously has a lot of growth to do, but he's played great defensively and had a bit of a breakout game on offense tonight with 8 points. Looks like he's finally getting comfortable.
Ever? Forever ever? Forever ever?
What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
