It's not all on Dawson. We just flat-out don't run much for him. Our offense begins and ends with dumping it down to Nix in the post and letting him go to work or kick it out to an open shooter. Much like the 1995 Orlando Magic. He's not one of those outside shooters, and rarely gets the ball as the first option in the post. We don't run pick and rolls where he's involved. The only things we run for him are the occassional curls in the lane.
He's the odd man out in the offense. His monster games come when he's active in the passing lanes, getting out on the break and cleaning up boards for putbacks down low. Otherwise, he just drifts as Nix and Payne post up, Appling drives the lane and Harris guns from deep.

Can we just stop with Dawson is going to the NBA after this season? Not throwing him under the bus. He really needs another Summer to get back in shape. If you guys watch, Dawson scores early and then disappears. That has almost every thing to do with conditioning. He needs another year to take his game to the next level to get completely healthy.
Appling is gassed. He needs Trice to get healthy--quickly. Appling to the NBA after this season should also stop. He needs one more year before any one talks about the NBA.
Payne, on the other hand....God, I wish he would stick around for one more year, but I think he is gone. He is MSU's best player right now and I only hope the best for him. He's MSU's MVP this season.
MSU will go as far as Payne can take them this season.
If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind.

Well if I remember correctly Dawson himself apologized to the team for his lack of effort. Maybe Dawson should ban himself for player bashing.
The moment is eternal
Very much agree with the last part...he really does look like he doesn't want to be there. However bringing him off the bench does nothing for State. He is turnover prone, has bad ball handling skills, can not shoot jumpers from anywhere on the floor. Like much of the team since the Michigan game he's seemed to have forgotten how to check.
As far as your last comment he is playing like an immature kid following this....5 star recruit with a bunch of talent comes off injury and wows everyone with his energy, rebounding, shot blocking and D...and did I say ...ENERGY?.......
However at 6-6 his position in the NBA is limited at this time UNLESS he can improve his offensive game.. slashing is good.. and he starts to do that better.. but everyone knows that a 6-6 guy with zero handle and zero outside shooting ability has to improve those if he wants to "come out THIS YEAR." With a kid of his own since his Jr year in HS you KNOW he's thinking about this.. "IF I could only get a pull up small jumper to work.. dribble and drive without fumbling the ball away I could come out and get a NBA contract THIS YEAR"... Sooo.. .he tries to dribble more..is trying to shoot from outside more.. and is FAILING miserably at it.. and he's looking at his dream of leaving for the big show after this year just crumble away before his eyes... so...
he pouts, gets discouraged, fights himself, sulks and otherwise makes himself totally miserable.. Seen this before with players though not necessarily with Izzo's team.. sad if this is true with this young man.
Where I see the problem is there really isn't much you can run for Dawson - outside the ally oop or him getting an offensive rebound and put back....what "play" are you going to run? Ball screens won't work since his handle isn't that great. His jump shot isn't there so not much there. No back to the basket presence.....it seems like it's a tough job game planning for Dawson on O.

Maybe you could run some curls at the foul line. That's usually where he slashes to the basket from, from the left elbow going across to the right side of the backboard or the front of the rim.
Those aren't easy shots to get, though.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
What scares me is I start to think of Summers his senior year.
I guess we've answered the question of whether Payne or McGary can throw a better punch.
Dawson's biggest problem is that he thinks he can dribble. His turnovers are awful. He should have been instructed to not let the ball hit the floor when we played IU since Oladipo stole it from him at will. The offensive skill struggles would be fine if he absolutely brought it on defense, but he just appears to quit too much. Not sprinting back on defense, not dealing with screens well. He's a low motor guy with amazing athleticism, kind of like Payne had been until recently. Hopefully they figure out how to light a spark under him.
He just hasn't had the same motor since taking that shot to the head and leaving the game. Maybe it's some sort of lingering head injury?
Agree and also, it would not be quite as much of an issue if he could hit mid rangers.
That off-season of rehabbing and not game development really hurt him. I expect him to take his "Sophomore leap" between this and next season. I hope...
