SoCal AAU culture is beyond toxic. Wonder how much Alford will ingratiate himself with the locals by bringing his kid, a talented high-volume shooter, to Westwood with him.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
the deal was sealed when they threw in free laker tickets
He really screwed UNM over
Alford’s current buyout is actually $150,000, according to @geoffgrammer. $1M buyout was to begin Monday.
That's the problem with contracts.
Nice downgrade UCLA. Well done. Lol.

It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!
The Layne Kiffin of basketball. A joke.
But in fairness, you think Izzo is a dumb coach, so one can only imagine how you mangled Alford's resume.
I suspect the hotness of his wife sealed it for him.
Ok, let me start by saying that the flex picture never gets old
As an IU undergrad, I watched Alford's early coaching career with some interest as he seemed like a natural replacement for Knight. I hated Alford's teams at Iowa. They made Bo's Wisconsin look like Magic's Lakers. Even with Crean making an ass of himself, I am so glad Alford never landed at IU.
7 year/18.2 million dollar deal according to ESPN
Rogue Leader= Obese coward who didn't attend MSU and has no college degree
don't forget "because your a punk ass!" when asked "hey coach, why the blow by?"
what a fucking baby. i'm sure he'll dive right in to the slimy waters of LA and cheat to their hearts content.
i forgot about this gem a friend reminded me of: Don't forget him trying him having the Fellowship of Christian Athletes try and talk a girl one of players had raped into having a face to face sit down with that player so she could hear his side.
Wow, they hire THAT douchebag?
This is a downgrade for them.
I thought everyone wanted to coach at historic UCLA?
This reminds me of the Jabba the Hoke hire. They thought that history alone would get them whoever they wanted. Wrong.
There's a time and a place for everything and it's called college.
Didn't someone mention a few days ago that UCLA may have problems with the NCAA shortly?
If that's true, then maybe the thought process behind hiring Flex was to use him as a transition coach through a probationary period. Very few, if any, top-tier coaches would want to jump to a program in advance of sanctions. Maybe Alford was one of the few coaches willing to give it a go with the hope he could survive the coming dark days?
Just thinking out loud here based on rumors. It's the OT season and I've got nothing else to do today.

OK. So that's 2.6 milion per year. Take out federal income tax, California's high income tax, the cost of living in Westwood versus New Mexico and I'd bet that from a financial standpoint Alford comes out behind compared to New Mexico.
Wondered if Flex gave that some thought. Of course with his ego he probably thinks he will now outdo Wooden.
I'm shocked. Some posters were sure UCLA would hire a highly regarded coach who has seen recent success. Some like Butler's Brad Stevens or VCU's Shaka Smart. UCLA allegedly has it all in SoCal.
Guess that's why they hired Alford. Bolted from his first major conference stop in Iowa City after several players had legal issues including one that served time for sexual assault.
Who got hustled? UCLA or Alford's agent?
Does that sportswriter who quit because of flex get his job back?

Weird thing is that Alford was one of their top choices.
I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.
As a UCLA alumn I was stunned. Unfortunately, I've got to agree that Alford is one of the few coaches with the ego to think he can pull it off. Unfortunately, I may have to turn in my Bruin card until they get rid of this bum.
I do take exception to the comparison to um. UCLA does have high expectations but not the same entitlement

The coaching carousels get weirder every year...makes me glad we have stability.
Alford does not bring an up-tempo style to Westwood. In his last 11 seasons, at Iowa and New Mexico (as far back as KenPom.com goes), Alford’s teams ranked just once in the nation’s top 100 in adjusted tempo. That was at Iowa in 2004. Only one of his six New Mexico teams was even in the top 150. Three of his six New Mexico teams were in the top 25 in terms of defensive efficiency. Only one of his teams was on offense.
The amount of dorks and tools in that picture in the background just cracks me up every time. Even the Iowa players look dorky.
