Yeah, I was dumbfounded by what Katz apparently reported. New Mexico was a grinding team. Not uptempo at all.
Part of this has to do with the fact that mid-major coaches are now staying at their respective schools. They see that they don't need to jump to a big conference school to get to a Final Four. The Sweet 16 "glass ceiling" for midmajors has been destroyed- see Wichita State, VCU, George Mason and Butler.
The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.
I also think they see that you can never make it to the Final Four if you first don't get into the tourney.
It's easier to play the MSU's and Indiana's once a year on a neutral floor than twice home and home.
UCLA is a unique situation, where anything less than a Final Four is considered a failed season.
I think we also have to look at what jobs have opened up. A lot of mid-major coaches see the situations at UCLA (unrealistic fanbase and mediocre) and Minnesota (no real recruiting base, terrible facilities, dealing with MSU, IU, etc on a yearly basis) and realize that they shouldn't have to settle.
Who would want to coach at a school where winning 25 games gets you fired?
More importantly, where 3 straight final four appearances mean nothing because you didn't win a title.
Seriously, UCLA fans would look at Izzo's accomplishments and say "1 title? not impressed."

Forgot this about flex
Too many have forgotten exactly what Alford did in the aftermath of that incident in Iowa City on September 6, 2002. Chicago News, Sports, Weather, Traffic, and the Best of Chicago - CBS 2 TV | WBBM Newsradio 780 | 670 The Score

Alford signed a 10 year extension with New Mexico on Tuesday, March 20, 2013. 10 days later, not 10 years Alford signs with UCLA.
Want to hear Alford pitch loyalty to recruits and players.
Alford is such a piece of shit...

Unfortunately this isn't limited to scum like Alford. The regional final between Syracuse and Marquette featured 2 coaches who covered up sex assaults by their players.
Bball in LA should be interesting the next couple of years
Wow, good find.
On phone, so I urge urge URGE everyone to find the LA Times article "wake him when the Steve Alford era is over"
At the very least if a UCLA coach lost to Harvard we would have been attending a news conference to announce his dismissal.
"Jim Harrick lost to Princeton, didn't he, and he won a national championship," [Athletic Director Dan] Guerrero fired back.
"Harrick won a national championship, then lost to Princeton and that was the beginning of the end for him," I said.
"Oh," Guerrero said.
Alford, meanwhile, was talking like someone who has already enjoyed incredible success.
"We did things at New Mexico that had never been done before," Alford said.
"Like lose to Harvard," I said, and welcome to L.A.
Thank you, Denicos.
Its a good read for sure. The context of it is great. Normally for the new hire you see the feel good story. This guy drilled him and I dont blame him. Howland lost the ability to recruit the local kids. They needed someone new. Alford is not that.
Harrick wasn't fired for losing to Princeton. He was fired, right before the season in November, for recruiting violations and falsifying expense reports.
Alford left Iowa for other reasons most probably aren't aware of. He was banging my buddies wife for one and there was a threat to expose that if he didn't leave. Guy is a true piece of sh*t!!
Man, you just can't make this shit up. Ummm, Flex? you mighta looked a little bit closer at that contract before you bolted.....
Monday afternoon Alford, for the first time, formally contacted the University of New Mexico on the matter stating “he offered to comply with the terms of his previous contract” and its $150,000 buyout and that “he believes his last day was March 30,” according to an email obtained by the Journal written by Associate University Counsel Kimberly N. Bell.
Alford on March 18 signed a term sheet agreeing to a 10-year contract including a $1 million buyout. That contract was to take effect April 1, two days after he announced he was resigning to take the coaching job at UCLA.
The previous contract Alford says he will abide by included a 30-day notice of termination requirement. UNM maintains that means March 30 was the day Alford gave notice and Monday, 30 days after he took the UCLA job, was his official final day of work. That would bring into play the unsigned April 1 contract and the $1 million buyout.
Final Fours are not good enough. Howland made three in a row and got run out of town. He's lucky tar and feathers weren't involved.
Vim -- noun: robust energy and enthusiasm : VITALITY
Since then he made the 2nd round, no tournament, 2nd round, no tournament and 1st round.
