That was really a topic on a sports talk show today? Wow. You'd think a guy could fill a show by talking Super Bowl, college hoops conference season, NBA, NHL, Bill Callahan, Richie Incognito getting into the Pro Bowl, college football recruiting, the woman who was the face of Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend talking on the Today Show, etc. The sound fans made during a football season that's been over for a couple of weeks seems like it would be pretty far down the list.
Haha, that is the show though. It is 100% driven/dependent on calls. Topics like Bill Callahan and the NBA generate zero phone calls while anything involving the UM/MSU rivalry is a sure fire way to flood the lines. It was mentioned earlier in the thread but that's what the whole "dial tone" bit is all about. It gets dropped when there is a topic that would be noteworthy on any other sports talk show but it is generating zero calls. Hell, I remember catching a few minutes of the show in the fall and people were more interested in talking about the possibility of the Lions signing Plax than the Tigers' playoff run. Really the only way that something like Bill Callahan would ever get phone calls is if Foster did one of his "how would you feel if (insert newsworthy even that happened in another city) happened in Detroit?". Then the you get a dozen callers saying they would be mad.
97.1 needs to change their format for me to listen. I hate caller driven shows. I don't give a damn what some unemployed downriver dumpster fire trash living in his double wide thinks.
I don't mind listening to Valenti's opinions, but when he's obviously just trolling for calls, the show goes downhill. They can only do this for so long and I think it's already run its course. I wonder if ratings have started to dip?
We have been getting consistently better over the season. Just like every othe izzo team. Will we win the B1G? Maybe. Will we be ready for march, and make a nice run? Probably
Go back to wells.
Keeping the sunshiners in check since 2000.
Your so vain, you probably thought that post was about you.
Who cares what that douche bag, ratings driven radio (aka dishonest), assclown thinks. He openly admitted he'd dump his season tickets if the football program struggles next year.
He jumped the shark with me when he had the balls to hang up on a caller for being a "smartass smarmy bitch"
That took some nerve, Seriously thought a lightning bolt was gonna take out the station on that one.
Honestly, I don't know why anyone here talks about him at all after he called Mel a derogatory name.
His job is to entertain and sell advertising, not be a sports expert. If he can irritate folks enough to call in he won. That's what makes successful radio.
Very true. At least for me though, his shtick has gotten old and the constant complaints and negativity are tiresome. I don't listen to he and Terry nearly as often as in the past.
Tanfan with a microphone.
Here's all you need to know about that show.
Now that the Wings appear to be struggling and maybe even in need of a makeover, it will start to become a daily routine of negativity, baiting, and insult fest to the fan base just to generate calls. Keep in mind that in the last 20 years of consistent prosperity Valenti would use the excuse that its just not a big enough sport to really warrant consistent discussion on the show.
Yeap Sean B has about 6-7 regular interviews a week. Lions Insider, Kevin Allen, Coach Lou./The Skip, Phile Steele, NFL Draft expert among others It does soo much for the show. Being the station the covers all 4 teasm they should be able to interview atleast 1 player and writer from each team every week (during season). So Mike or Matt if you reading do this please.
We're a contender every year screw what Valenti thinks.
He jumped the shark back in Dec 2008 when he said Izzo needed to start recruiting "thugs and streetballers".
Nah. Tanfan actually takes care of himself unlike Valenti.
Pretty sure he called the Torbert era a bunch "losers".
That was Drew Sharp. Different guy, same schtick.
Hello producer Matt. Nice to have you here.
Just like I'm sure you thought the lance Armstrong cheating threads were "good publicity".
youngblood96/viggo martyr/jargon: tRCMB's answer to Vidkun Quisling and Fred Phelps.
Who the fuck cares what he says; he's an entertainer. Don't listen if you're not entertained.
Ninetyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy seven one.
A man's gotta eat!
Exactly how I feel. Listen a bit more during football season because its still fun to listen to the Walvies go apeshit whenever MSU is brought up, but tune out during basketball
I love when MSU does something that many here wait with baited breath to hear Valenti's take on it. Like he is the official voice of MSU or something. The guy has opinions on everything, which is his job. I tend to disagree with him much more than I agree with him, but that doesn't make either one of us right. He is pretty good at his job, which is to get people to call in to the show etc. However, if you are looking for someone who is a sports authority, Valenti is NOT your guy. He knows nothing about hockey (although I do love when he throws out that Terry was a Wings beat writer for a bit, as if that makes him knowledgeable), very little about NCAA hoops, pretends to be an authority on NFL but is basically a blowhard on that topic. He knows nothing about baseball. He talks a good NBA game, but generally I tune out at that time because the NBA is no different than the WWE, so I could not care a less about that "sport".
There are plenty of shows that are good for actual sports talk. Valenti is not one of them. It is similar to watching Jerry Springer. You know you are dumber for watching it, but yet you get drawn in at how fascinatingly stupid people can be, even when it is not real, or the opinions expressed are not even what they believe.
Someone above said it best, Valenti is an entertainer. After that, his knowledge on topics is lacking at best. Heck, spend a week listening to his show, but before you do, peruse this board (the first couple pages). Majority of the time, his show is derived from topics you see here.
