I was raised to anchor my driving to speed limit signs. On most roadways, I go 3-5 MPH over the limit. Highways are an exception; 10 MPH over the limit is the norm there. Residential neighborhoods are another exception, because I'll keep it right at 25 (no sense endangering kids/pedestrians). So, point is, I am keenly aware of the posted limit.
There's another class of drivers who don't seem to be aware of the speed limit, and they drive a "natural" speed. For example, they might be going 40 in a 45-zone, and they'll stay at that speed when a sign changes the limit to 35.
So what's your driving style regarding speed limits?
I'm usually too drunk to care.
5mph over every where. Except on express way then I do 9 over.
In the city I just drive along with traffic, which is often 50 pct taxis.
With little to no traffic on the freeway, 80 in a 65/70 or 65/70 in a 55.
10 mph over across the board.
Didn't a poster create a stir on here a few years ago by making light of his own drunk driving?
Was it you!
9 & you're fine. Except when it's 25, then I go 30.
I mostly try to flow with traffic. On I-275 where it is 65 mph I keep it between 70 and 75. On I-75 I cruise between 75 and 80
At the limit or slightly over. Growing up my dad was a cop, so.... ya. I'm paranoid about most laws.
That's the approach I take too. With the caveat that if I'm on the freeway and everyone is driving bizarrely slow (I'm looking at you, New Jersey), then I'm not going to outrun traffic.
Safe speed or the speed limit whichever is lower. At night in the country that often means cresting hills or taking curves at less than the limit.
Usually go with the flow of traffic except in areas I'm not as familiar with. Too many speed cameras around here to go too fast.
Pretty sure it was a chick.
Has anyone else noticed how slow everyone in mid-Michigan drives? I'm from Metro Detroit & generally everyone drives the speed limit. I get to Okemos/EL and everyone is driving at least 5 under.
I generally drive around 10mph over on the highway if the speed limit is 65mph+.
The exception is Chicago area highways that are all 55mph. If traffic is light (which is rare), I have no issues driving 75-80mph in these areas which is usually the speed most other cars are going.
If I'm way out in the boonies or it's the middle of the night and there's no traffic, I'll sometimes open it up a little and cruise at 85-90mph. I rarely drive faster than 90mph and it's usually just for short bursts. (I have a bad habit of running it up to 100mph+ when I get on an expressway and there's no traffic, but I immediately back off and slow down)
I don't really speed in the city or in residential areas. I also actually stop at 4 way stops, unlike most people who just slow down and roll through.
Everyone that drives faster than me is a maniac. Everyone that drives slower is a moron.
Speed limit or lower on side-streets. Usually about 5 over everywhere else.
Generally 5 over in the city. 10 over on the highway.
Whenever I see someone in the left lane going slow on the highway, it seems to be a Michigan driver. Not sure why that it is...
On Hagadorn at 8:00am I put the cruise on 25
City I keep to 5 MPH over at most. Highway usually 10 over depending on the flow of traffic. Driving from Houston to Michigan or vise versa, I usually average 80-85. That's a long drive and I get antsy driving much slower.
So in other words, to me you are a moron.
Always thought that was an old George Carlin line. That everyone thinks they themselves are the world's best driver, and that everyone else is either too slow (idiot) or fast (maniac). Not sure if it's an actual joke of his or not, honestly.
5 over usually at all times unless there is a slow moron in front of me, or im on the highway which i usually go 5-10 over (a certain someone likes to send me off with a cheery "don't speed!" when I leave...hah).
getting out of chicago - anywhere from 70-85 depending on traffic flow (94 is a racetrack south of 35th), indiana 9 over, ohio 5 over (their tollway cops are VICIOUS to out of staters)
I did 90 on the Ohio Turnpike this summer all the way from Pennsylvania to Michigan. No problems.
As for the general question, I generally drive 80-90 on the highway. 5-10 over on other roads. Of course, I rarely drive.
I got lucky last May, was in a pack of about 7 cars going 85-90 nearing toledo, cop picked off the last one in line.
