Well, I think it is clear John Hannah is the answer.
I suppose I should have asked it outside of him. That would be a tough choice. But without polls that would be useless as well.
Fine, John McCallie.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
No question about it. He did more to advance the university than anybody else associated with it in it's history.
Kill Bubba Kill
Lurking on tRCMB since 1996
Yes, he had a vision for Michigan State.
along with Steve Smith I would add Scott Skiles to the poll (if we had one)

I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom. -Bob Dylan

Certainly it's John Hannah. He is and always will be number 1. The question really should be who is 1A?
I liked someone earliers Dr. Beal nomination even though he graduated from UM.
And I like Izzo even above Bigge and Duffy.
And though he probably never set foot in Michigan let alone East Lansing I also nominate Justin Morrill.

We're close for "in lifetime". Same people, different order. I'd say Magic, Izzo, Mateen.
If MD wins a Rose Bowl, he'd come in at solid #4.
Here's my vote for Andy H in the category. The amount of games he's been to, the passion he has for our school, the great films he shares with us. I know Hannah and Smith and Izzo etal have done all kinds of things, but in fandom I'd like to give Andy H one vote for greatest Spartan.
Walter Adams. Everybody else is second.
Another vote for John Hannah here. Anybody who doesn't think Hannah is the greatest Spartan of all time needs to read "Arrogance and Scheming in the Big Ten". He is the biggest reason MSU is where it is today, both academically and athletically.
1. John Hannah
2. Earvin Johnson
3. Lyman Frimodig
4. George Alderton
5. Duane Vernon
I think there are only 3 candidates. Magic, Steve Smith, and Izzo.
Location: Mumbai, India
Yes, Hannah graduated from MAC, but also attended GRJC, and scUM.
"John Hannah was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 9, 1902, to Wilfred Steele and Mary Ellen (nee Malone) Hannah. Hannah attended Grand Rapids Junior College, 1919–1921; the University of Michigan, 1921–1922; and graduated from Michigan State University in 1923 with a B.S. degree."
My seats at SS. My driveway in winter.
In 1923 he would have graduated from Michigan Agricultural College.
Hate to burst your bubble, but Mateen has not yet earned a degree from MSU.
Then he would have been an Aggie, and not a Spartan.
Hannah later turned MSC into MSU. He became a Spartan.
