I really don't understand how he's not in this conversation. He's averaging 20 points and 6 rebounds playing for a team that plays fewer possessions per game than scUM or IU. He means everything to his team...he does what he does against double teams constantly. It's not like scUM or IU that has multiple options. His defense has risen up to 1st-team level. His team is looking at being tied for 1st, despite having the toughest schedule (along with MSU's schedule).
I can see the preference for Burke because he runs the show. I can see the preference for Oladipo because of his defense. But if you're looking at an all-around MVP, how is Thomas at least not in this conversation? He gets my vote.
I still think Oladipo should be POTY, but I agree that Thomas should at least be in the discussion. The talking heads have already narrowed it down to a two man race. What he has done leading that team to a possible B1G Championship is remarkable.

I was just telling my dad this last night. Thomas could share the B1G title too, he's the league's leading scorer, a better defender and rebounder than Burke, a better rebounder than Homedepot and he means a lot to his team.
I think Burke will get the nod, without him Michigan is an NIT team, they might be 15-15 right now.
Good question. All three are damn good players, and all three should be in the discussion.
But this one where the UM hype machine will flex its muscles to make the Burke brand larger than the other two.
The big reason is just that OSU isn't the sexy pick that the other two schools are. Both IU and UM spent time at #1 this season and have had high profiles all year. I also think that Oladipo and Burke have been marginally more consistent that Thomas. It's close though.

OSU isn't a Return to Glory story. Lot of people in this league don't recognize just how good OSU has been for basically a decade, but they are still a known entity and therefore not as fun a story for the press.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
He's their Neitzel, except much bigger and much more athletic. While Drew singlehandedly kept our tournament streak alive, Thomas has singlehandedly led them to a possible B10 championship (and if not, very damn close). Helluva player.
Totally agree. Looking forward to him leaving OSU.
he is the best player on a team that has a chance to share the title. That teen would be dog s*** without him. Definitely should be in the discussion.
If you look at conference only games Burke is out scoring Thomas with a much higher ORtg (offensive efficiency)
No doubt. But, scUM has had an easier conference schedule, Burke has had better offensive players around him, is at a position to create his own opportunities, and plays worse defense.
thomas isn't as efficient as the other guys.
it should be, and is a 2 person race

Hey i like offensive efficiency stats too, but for example Green and Lucas were horrible by that number. It's just one factor, and when you consider the kind of load Thomas has, of course his efficiency is going to be weaker. Do you think if you switched him out and put Burke or Oladipo on OSU instead that their efficiency would be any better? You see what Burke shoots like when "it's all on him". He's horrible. And Oladipo has never been more than a 3rd option on his team.
I also think Craft is more important to that team than Thomas
Eye test could easily say Oladipo is a more outstanding all around player. Stats are part of the story, but not all of it.
Why not Zoidberg for POY?
Thomas/Oladipo both have road wins against top 5 teams. Burke has diddly poo on the road. Unless we want to count Minnehaha who was a top 10 team but has shown to die off towards the grind of the season.
I'll get down voted into oblivion, but I think Craft is OSU's MVP.
Thomas will be the best NBA player.
You made a believer out of me. I'd go:
I think Oladipo is the best all-around player of the three, but Thomas and Burke are crucial centerpieces of their team. Take those guys off their teams and those are .500 Big Ten teams. Take Oladipo off IU and they are still a top 3 team.
"RCMB: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainry." - some dude from MgoBlog
because Trey Burke is better
I might have agreed with that LAST year, when they really needed Craft to set the defensive tone and distribute. But this year's OSU team has a lot of guys playing great defense, and Thomas is really their only reliable offensive threat.
That and 20ppg and 6rpg is still 20 and 6. It's not Cabrera's triple crown, but those are still pretty big benchmarks. How many 20 and 6 guys haven't won POY in the B10? The only guys in the last several years to have averaged 20-6 in conference play have been Evan Turner and JaJuan Johnson. Turner won POY. Did Johnson, or did that stiff point guard from Wisconsin win it that year?

As a Buckeye fan I don't think it should go to Thomas. Burke I think will get it.
The reasons I don't think Thomas should get it is a couple things, first, if he is "off", he tends to pout a bit. You'll catch him staying on the offensive end of the floor complaining to a ref after a miss or perceived foul while his man is down the floor scoring or rebounding, see Payne in our last game against you guys. While Thomas was whining, Payne was getting his butt down court and making a play. Drives me crazy to see him in our half court offense come off a screen, not get the ball, then throw his hands up and get pissy because he didn't get the ball. My second reason is although he IS the best scorer on our team, there have been a few games that we made our run to get back in a game or to pull away in a game with him on the bench. Our defensive pressure and energy picks up when he is out sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, glad he's on our team, but I don't think he is the all around MVP that others are to their teams.
