I think you put this very well. Better than I have been able to. They want championships more than they want Michigan to lose. To think otherwise is asinine. Doesn't mean they have to sit there and openly root for them. They can go the route of just saying they are rooting for Indiana to lose just as well.
The issue at hand here is there are people who are not even in the rooting for an Indiana loss camp. If Indiana was playing Minnesota on Sunday they would have no problem rooting for Minnesota. They are actually saying they would rather Michigan lose than win a championship. Which out and out means you care more about Michigan losing than good things happening to Michigan State. When you see that bumper sticker that says I root for Michigan State and whoever is playing Michigan, you are actually saying you are rooting for whoever is playing Michigan more. That is just sad. Cut up your MSU Season tickets, and go buy Michigan season tickets, sit in their stands, wear the opposing team's colors, and root like hell for Michigan to lose. You will somehow get more joy out of that.
Well, you know what Duffy said............
I'm looking forward to the crowd reaction Sunday when they announce the score.
That was 50 years ago.

Fuck the last 3... what about Minnesota? They're fucking trash and we pooped on ourselves that game.
This is a distinguishable situation. In your scenario, a u-m win would result in MSU going to the fucking Rose Bowl, as in, being the Big Ten Champion in Football. In the present case, a u-m win would result in u-m, MSU and a host of others sharing a regular season title in Basketball. However, u-m's win would bolster its stature far more than that of any of the other teams who backed into the title.
Rooting for u-m in this scenario is ridiculous, and you should all be ashamed. I care about Final Fours and National Titles in basketball. Get a grip.

you got the balls to tell him that?!!!!!
Why are you obsessed with Michigan?
I'm not. I'm just a realist -- a win for u-m is never good for MSU. Recruiting and perception is too important to the program's future.
The same people rooting for UM and being intentionally obtuse as to the disparate impact of them winning a share of the title will be the first ones starting threads and bitching when ESPN runs 15 stories about how UM is totally back and just won back to back conference titles, and how the Detroit News and FreeP will have them on the front page but not even mention MSU sharing one.
The story will be something like, "they seized a championship and recovered after a drubbing by MSU, yada yada" and these people will whine that MSU never gets respect.
The media and the conference WANT UM back more than they have or will ever give a shit about anything MSU does.
That said another banner would be nice and 10 years from now no one will know or care but it's insane to think that UM failing isn't just as good for MSU, especially in the short to mid-term, as another regular season banner we share with 3 other schools.
Can't wait till Sunday! It is going to be a great day of Basketball.
This is the rational take.
I firmly believe you can wish for something but it doesn't mean you need to root or cheer for another team. I really hope Izzo and those coaches and players get a chance to win another BT title. They've had as hard a road as anyone in the conference considering the teams they played once (PSU, Northwestern, Illinois and Iowa). So if they tie for the title I will be really happy for them. It certainly doesn't mean I'm going to outwardly cheer for UofM. I won't, but if UofM happens to win on Sunday I'll be happy that it helps MSU's team achieve one of their goals.
BTW, people seem to act like UofM winning a BT will boost their cred. Who cares? Izzo and Co. certainly are not worried about them... why should you be? Unless Burke stays a couple more years and/or UofM wins the national title I don't see a huge tide wave of change happening. UofM has gotten better, but to act worried because UofM might win another title along with us is lame in my book. Don't worry what they do, just be happy for MSU. Go Green!
Stupid argument. We are Michigan State, and we have Tom Izzo, we don't need to worry about recruiting against Meatchicken.
Don't post poop!
Who cares if their program stays down or not.
Ooooh, better make sure Wisconsin's program stays "down" or we won't win anymore!
Who the hell cares? If we get to the final four AGAIN, the whole goddamned country will say, "Oh, yeah, look, there's Michigan State in the final four again. Sounds about right".
If by backing into things, you keeping up with the top teams in the best conference in the country over the course of a long season then. OK, we "backed" into it.
C'mon dude. What do you think he's going to say. That answer is pretty much the best possible way to avoid the question. Don't be a dumbass.
Yeah, that's a pretty stupid interpretation of what's going on in this thread.
I was having this conversation with a fellow RCMBer at the game last night and at the time I was undecided. I have thought about it and I hope umAA wins. This team deserves a title.
We've played the hardest schedule in the B1G and probably the nation. We've done it while missing two key players(Trice/Harris). For the most part we've beaten the teams we should and I hope the media tries to play up umAA as the only B1G champion. It will be just another chip on this great teams shoulder.
My God man. You are continually whining about "national perception" yet you come on this public message board and demonstrate in plain sight, how insecure our fan base can be about Michigan athletics and the "national media".
What would you think, as an impartial fan, if you read this exact post on some Auburn forum by an Auburn fan about Alabama?
Pull yourself together.
Exactly. Don't let the blue wall skew your perception of MSU nationally. Jay Williams said last night Michigan State is a legit threat to win the National Title.
Exactly. I can't believe people are using it as some doctrine on how we need to think. It was the most sterile answer possible.
You need to root for Penn State basketball for a couple of years to gain some perspective. Shit be cra
Stop being a douchebag.
