I will start by saying that I hate TL like the plague...
But, the only reason I had the game on was to watch JC get loose on some wolvies.... I watched this matchup very closely
My general observations: TL won the battle the entire game.
1. Clowney was only going full speed about half the game. Seemed lazy in pursuit most of the time. took Plays off
2. Clowney was easily pushed to the inside, had a very hard time keeping contain, showed poor technique to get outside, or TL just bullied him
3. Clowney looked beat out there in the second half.... There were plays run to his side where he just stood up, got pushed out of the way, and made no effort to pursue.
4. Clowney in pass situations was not a presence at all. If he went outside, he couldn't get underneath Lewan. If he went inside, he was doubled or TL rode him down the line.
5. Lewan went one on one with him the entire game. There was no zone blocking, it was Lewan reading Clowney's angle and taking him head on whichever way he went...
I kept saying the entire game how Clowney was getting owned..... Was absolutely shocked to hear him called the player of the game......
2. He did sort of murder that one guy. That's the highlight play from the game and probably what the "player of the game pickers" based the choice on.
Lewan did have two penalties called on him in the first quarter, and should have had a few others, but was playing the odds that they won't call the same penalty every play.
I did not see one on one but a few times, Lewan had help most of the time. They at least chipped on him with a back or TE about 90% of the plays. Lewan went one on one about 10 times with him and when they did they moved the pocket away from his side. The hand full of isos they showed were of Lewan cheating by holding the hair or face mask fo Clowney.
I saw a different game.
This all day. If you watch Lewan he does something illegal on almost every play. I guarantee half of every play against Clowney he had a hands to the face or a hold.
He doesn't get caught though so more power to him.
Michigan State University is the university of Michigan
I feel like you could say the same thing about 90%+ of linemen, offense or defense
Sometimes our fanbase is embarassing and it's evident in this thread. Why can't some of you just admit that Lewan is a good player. Hate him all you want because he went to UM but grow up. He's a JR and projected to go as high as #10 overall. I would've loved to have him protecting our QB's and opening up holes for our RB's the past 2-3 years.
I realize it's not relevant to the current discussion but when was our last top 10 pick? Rogers? I can tell you our last OL drafted in the first two rounds was Flozell Adams in 1998. Again, somewhat irrelevant but I think it puts into context how good of a player Lewan is and projects to be in the future.
Lewan at the least held his own against Clowney. Clowney got the better of him some plays, and Lewan got the better on others. It was a pretty good battle. Lewan does seem to get away with a lot of hands to the face/facemask though. I know he got called once, and there were at least 2 other times replays showed him doing it with no call. I will leave the holding out of the discussion, because EVERY OL holds. Amazing, that Lewan is "nasty" for some of the things he does, while Gholston and MSU "are dirty" and "undisciplined". With that being said, if you say you wouldn't like Lewan to be anchoring the MSU line, you are either lying or know nothing about football.
If Lewan played for us, he'd be called for his antics all game long, warned by the Big Ten, and widely regarded as the dirty playing thug he is. Since he is one of the leaders and the best, he is a "great" lineman. So we get to watch him become a huge bust at the next level when his methods are not protected by conference refs. NFL refs don't mind calling the same penalty repeatedly if the player is stupid enough to keep doing it.

Minus the the almost decapitation of Smith (after Smith hit him in the groin area), did he make any other plays?
I saw LT/Hugh Green/ Lee Roy Selmon play... Mr. Clowney you aren't at that level. May be next year???
Wait, wait, wait. You're saying that a 19 year old true sophomore is not at the level of a group of players that includes arguably the best LB in NFL history, another LB that finished 2nd in the Heisman voting, and a DE that was a 6 time Pro-Bowler? Get out, really? You don't think he's at their level?
That's like saying the US and Japan played evenly during WWII. Japan got some shots in, but the US dropped the bomb when it mattered. Lewan completely missed Clowney on the biggest play of the game. 'Nuf said
Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub
He holds on every play. When Trico was giving him props that did a slo-mo of the dirty douche. Sure enough he's holding......the guy by the hair.
Trico comes back from the commercial and says he's not pumping up Lewan they were just showing a player that others are hyping.
Did you miss the holding and personal foul that lewan had in the first half?
Or, I know how MSU gets penalties called against them and I'd rather not have it be 1st and 20 every other 1st down.
All I know is there where some um drives when clowney's name wasn't mentioned.
This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.
You are a moran, all season long UofM has been getting gifts calls. It's embarrassing for college football. And Delaney already has our players pegged as "thugs", you think those refs would be fine with all Lewan's racist crap if he was in the G&W? Delusional

Now with a PhD in Applied Llama Physics...
If you had watched the whole game, you would have seen that the matchup was very even. Clowney beat Lewan straight out one time on the Denard hit, and the rest of the game, he was pretty quiet except for the fumble, which wasn't even Lewan's assignment.
2 things: 1) all posts above saying how he got better of CLowney are true: He did...wasn't even close
2)every WORD misterray just typed is so fucking true it's scary. The big ten hates our ass and they protect SCum and O$U with a vim because well.........money talks pretty much.
Even more pathetic... I feel sorry for fans like you. Actually, no I don't. You and most of the others on this board deserve wallowing in the misery you create for yourselves. Freaking loser mentalities run rampant in this place.
Let the vitriol commence...
Lewan wasn't assigned to block Clowney on that play. He called an audible after Clowney changed alignment, so he and the guard were pulling right. The TE missed the call, and moved upfield to block, leaving Clowney unblocked.
Taylor Lewan is an excellent football player and those that are in this thread saying otherwise are out of their minds. Its fine if you don't like him, he's easily the best offensive lineman in the conference. Stop being so ignorant about it

It is common for O-Lineman to "completely miss" people they are not assigned to block.
