Payne vs Kelly. If Kelly is physically limited due to his injury in the slightest he's going to have a hard time guarding Payne. Payne can out muscle him down low or beat him off the dribble from the wing. I can see Payne pressuring Kelly (and possibly Plumlee on help defense) into foul trouble. It also could set up Nix with a lot og wide open looks down low thanks to interior passing.
I heard that Duke will have no one who can handle Dawson or know what to do to keep him off the boards.

The will to succeed is important, but what's more important is the will to prepare.
Good point. However, i think a key matchup for this game will be the charge (flop) vs the blocking call.
Harris vs Curry is going to be fun to watch. Both are explosive offensively but I think Harris has the edge defensively.
duke plays smart defense, not good defense. This squad is about position and discipline, not athleticism. Kelly is not used to anyone being able to step up and guard him on the three, given his height. We can thank D Thomas for prepping Payne big-time for this match-up.
Disagree. I think the two will stalemate each other.
On the other hand, I LOVE the Nix/ Plumlee match up. I think Nix goes off against a guy that gets pushed around by guys Derrick's size. I really think Nix is going to carry this team through the tournament.
Yes, but Plumlee can drive on Nix and get him into foul trouble as well. Will be interesting to watch.
Saluiman (sp?) or whatever is a very good player, but he's 6'4'' 185. Their 3 guard lineup seems to go 6'1'', 6'2'', and Saluiman at 6'4''. Even Valentine could be a tough tweener for them.
They got 2 bench guys in Jefferson and Hariston who are 6'8'' and 6'7'' averaging 12 minutes a piece. Those guys could be a bigger factor for them keeping Dawson off the glass. But together they only score 6pt/game, so they lose offense if they do that. Interesting roster matchups.

Their 3 guard line up makes Dawson absolutely crucial in this game. They will have to choose to put a smaller guy on either Harris or Dawson. If they put Saluiman on Harris then Dawson will have a huge size advantage and would be good to see Payne pull Kelly from the basket and let Dawson go to town in the paint.
Refs -v- shoulders.
We have 2 guards with shoulder issues. If Duke doesnt try to rough us up a bit, they are the dumbest team on the planet. Refs need to keep it clean.
If we keep our guards in the game, we win this by 10
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day.
Echenique, the creighton big man who is a little smaller but just as stout as Nix got Plumlee to foul out last night and let him have 5 boards all night. That guy was the MVC defensive player of the year and totally dominated Plumlee physically. The guy has touch but Nix will be able to have a similar effect I'm sure and capitalize more on the offensive end and win that match up.
What I am scared of is Duke going four guards like OSU and running pick and roll lay up drills.
Kelly doesn't scare me too much. He's not that quick, but he's crafty. I'm sure Izzo is going to be showing Payne plenty of film on Kelly's arsenal of fakes. Stay home on him and force him to pass it or take a contested shot.
tRCMB - Visit at your own risk of being disgusted.
He scares me because he is crafty and he shoots >80% from the line and 45% from 3. I'm wondering if Dawson will be also helping out here. Payne can't get 2 quick fouls and I could see K having some early plays drawn up to do just that.
I think the backcourts are a wash, but I'll take nix/payne vs plumlee/kelly all day everyday.
There are very few teams with the personel to shut those 2 down.
Crieghton missed a ton of open looks from 3 and bunnys around the basket. Harris and trice will nail those open looks and payne and dawson will clean up on the offense glass.
Echenique also really sucked on the offensive end, so many missed opportunities.
If we get fair refs, we win. MSU is better.
I'm not convinced that Kelly is 100%. Of course, having said that, I'm sure he will proceed to torch us for 30
I think Dawson could be key and have a break out game.
He's accepting his roll on this team as a garbage man scorer, rebounder, shot blocker, etc...Starting to play with in himself a bit more.
(Rexrode just had a nice piece on this in Freep)
I don't think Duke has anyone who can keep him away from the rim if he's fired up (That's the key now isn't it). He could have a big day on the glass if Duke is paying too much attention to keeping Payne/Nix off of it. Basically what he did in the first two rounds, filling up the stat sheet with rebounds, assists, and steals. Valentine is like this too. I think Duke's guards are going to have a hard time when Val is out there.
Very. Nix did a good job with Zeller so I'm anxious to see if Plumlee can do better.
Costello can help with this. He's becoming a very good defender v. players like Plumlee/Zeller.
Yes, they play position sound defense, but with a bad wheel, can kelly move laterally enough to stsy in front of a guy like Payne who can take a guy off the dribble from the wing? If so, how much room is he going to give him to shoot the jumper. Guarding a stretch four like Payne is going to be the toughest assignment Kelly has been asked to do since coming back.
If Payne gets lose, EVERYTHING opens up on offense.
Yup. These guys have a bunch guards and a bunch of tall forwards. No swingsman like dawson. They'll probably put Thornton or Suliamon on him. Dawson could be the x factor.
This is a very good point. It will be interesting to see if they have their guards dig down on Payne when he blows by Kelly. If they do, hopefully AP will have the awareness for the kick out because his long dribbles are prime for a guard to steal.
Dawson, right now, is a Raymar Morgan playing the wing. He has a size and strength advantage on most other 3s and can pick up the slop from missed shots when Payne flashes out to the perimeter similar to what Morgan used to do when Suton was in pick and pop mode.
I agree...and I think he's starting to accept that roll...which could mean VERY good things for Dawson and MSU.
Read the box score, and it's the same story for Branden Dawson. Watch him play, and it's dramatically different.
Duke's guards are going to relentlessly be in Valentine's face and will put his ball handling to the test. He is going to have to play a very heady game. Every year Duke's backcourt has a way of getting in the opposing teams heads and taking them out of what they want to do.
