Didn't Shaka turn down Illinois already?

Glen had his eye on other jobs and getting blown out in the bowl game didn't help
This firing is exactly why Minnesota Gopher basketball will always never be relevant, f'n morons.
All while the B10 is at its best in years.
no but Minnesota is the UNC of the North and deserves better... JFC
Because everyone thinks they can do better.
Hard to tell a fanbase, "sorry, .500 in conference is the best we can do. Come out and support us forever!"
Truthfully, with the right hire, they can do better. Chances are good that they will not find that person, but it is possible. Historically, they have had a decent talent pool to draw from, and they are not completely bereft of a basketball tradition. The Haskins scandal cast a long shadow, and Tubby has basically moved them past that and made that memory distant, after Monson endured the immediate aftermath. Monson may not have made the tournament as often as Tubby, but he did finish 9-7, 8-8, and 10-6 in conference during his time there. That may just be the program's ceiling as you state, but the next coach inherits a program that's in much better shape than the post-Haskins era.
By the way, if they really didn't tell him before the news broke, that's a huge issue on top of being a terrible thing to do to a guy. Can't do that as you're trying to move on from a "good guy" coach, because it will hurt their chances of hiring the next guy.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
This really doesn't shock me. Everyone in the Twin Cities has been calling for Tubby's head since February. After they beat Indiana, the local newspaper and sports talk radio pretty much all said, "Great. Now they can't fire Tubby." Under Tubby, Minnesota had one of the worst if not the worst post-February records in the Big Ten.
Minnesota has a new AD who is allegedly a fundraising genius. It's speculated that the AD feels if he's responsible for the success of the athletic department, he wants his own guys in place.
I've lived in four different states and I've never seen a community so apathetic about their flagship (not to mention their only Division I) college program and yet so demanding of excellence from said program.
Here is the rooting interest in the Twin Cities:
17. Gopher hockey
19. Gopher basketball
20. Gopher football
I see little or no evidence that Tubby is a great coach.
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day.
How many times has Tulsa and Georgia been to the Sweet 16?
Tulsa: 3 times. 2 under Tubby, the other under Bill Self.
Georgia: Twice. Once under Hugh Durham, the other under Tubby Smith.
Neither program has been back to the S16 since.
Did you know that Smith's Championship team at Kentucky was one of two National Championship teams in the modern era that did not include a future NBA lottery pick, or Future First Team All American?
I can honestly say, that it is my opinion that Smith was the only coach to consistently win at Kentucky without cheating (allegedly) or at least being a slime ball.
that's nice, he beat IU and MSU, but aren't those offset by the losses to Purdue, Nebraska and Northwestern?

So wait, a program that has been to 3 NCAA tourneys in the last 25 years, plays in a mid major conference that they haven't won since 1987 is a lateral move to Minnesota?
Read what I posted again. I said that Marshall would be a lateral hire meaning no better or worse than Tubby. I have no doubt that he'd take the job. My point is that Minnesota would be hiring a white version of Tubby who's 11 years younger and ringless.
Nobody remembers who you lost to, they remember who you beat
Rogue Leader= Obese coward who didn't attend MSU and has no college degree
The programs aren't lateral, but you won't convince me that either of those guys are better options than Tubby
I don't want to come right out and say their "braintrust" is dumb, but they did lose money last fall selling beer at college football games. If you can't win at that, not sure winning the B1G in men's hoops is very likely.
It's a town full of losers. I'm pulling out of here to win!
Flip Saunders can't commit to that job. He's the front man for a group that's bidding to buy the Timberwolves, and if that occurs he will become their GM. The most I can see him doing with the Gophers is helping with the coaching search.
My bad. I thought you meant from a program standpoint not coaching.
And that's why they're Minnesota. They're probably looking for someone "who can get us Tyus Jones". I guarantee the next coach has much less success.
I agree, the guy was under .500 in the Big 10, never competed for a Big 10 title and always seemed to collapse toward the end of seasons. Can't believe everyone is shocked he got canned.
There are no minor league, major junior, or Tier I junior hockey teams in Minnesota. There's only one Tier II junior program in Austin near the Iowa border.
In Minnesota, it's all about high school, college, and the NHL. Minnesotans despise major junior hockey as evident by a Twin Cities high school coach dismissing a player for just making a visit to a WHL team. The coach was quoted as saying he wanted to "send a message" that Minnesotans don't believe in that system. Minnesota hockey doesn't want minor, major, or Tier I or Tier II junior teams competing for fans with the local high schools.
Of course MSU fans want Tubby to stay, he poses no threat to Izzo. Something like 4-15 in his career vs Izzo.
I'm sorry to hear that. Tubby was a class act.
There is only one reason why Minnesota would want to keep Tubby - and that would be because they are satisfied with mediocrity. Many here thinks they are idiots to aspire for more but If I were a Minnesota fan I would be all for rolling the dice and going for better.
Thank you, Denicos.
