Bump when the bullpen makes you..
This post has been edited 2 times, most recently by AllSloppyNoJoe 11 months ago
I was just going to start a thread about Jim Leyland's masterful bullpen management tonight. Glad I don't have to.
Please do so. This topic needs like five more threads, not joking.
Rarely defend Leyland, but in all honesty managing this bullpen is like trying to form a piece of art out of a pile of shit.
Don't sell the bullpen short - they are serviceable.
True but, any great manager can manage this shit bullpen into an average one. He had issues way before this game and this year. He doesn't have the greatest track record with bullpen decisions.
If you can't find two or three guys that can throw strikes and get outs, we have bigger problems. Get the ball into the 8th. How hard is it?

Leyland is terrible at managing the bullpen. How Ortega was left in that long is beyond me.
I would love to see some stats on walks given by the bullpen. We must be at least top 3?
Agree in principle, but I'm not sure what else he was supposed to do tonight. That's what happens when your starters don't get out of the fifth inning for the third time in four nights.
I agree that there isn't much he can do. But why not see what you can get out of Reed there? Not like he could have done much worse than Ortega.
Starting pitching did the Tigers in this series. Fister got victimized by some ridiculously bad luck (both of Beltre's doubles were ridiculous) and couldn't get guys on 2-strike counts. Sanchez and Verlander were simply shelled.
AlAl being toast (hasn't even arrived in Toledo, dealing with some sort of personal issue) hurts the bullpen terribly. Coke and Smyly each threw a ton yesterday, and Downs got Fister out of the previous inning against a team that destroys left-handed pitching. No one else in the cupboard other than Benoit and Valverde, and those guys don't throw in the 6th. Now Coke is back out there, but I'm sure that was an absolute worst-case scenario.
Hershiser said it correctly early on. If the Rangers got into the Tigers bullpen tonight, the Tigers were in serious trouble. Fister had to be better, and he couldn't put guys away.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
They're servicing the Rangers right now, that's for sure

Long way to go, but as a now Francona is doing the better job.
Ortega has been outstanding since coming up until tonight. Had Leyland put Reed out there, people would scream at him for putting a rookie in a tough spot like they always do.
No-win situation for Leyland.
This makes me even more upset the Tigers didn't sign Rafael Soriano when he was there this off-season.
He'll probably go tonight also. Remember there were still three innings to go when Ortega was in there.
Soriano was going to pitch in the 6th inning? He's a closer, sorry.
No, but he sure as hell could have helped a lot. Much better choice than Valverde to close.
Wouldn't have had anything to do with tonight.
The closer for this team is probably pitching for someone else, and will be acquired via trade later in the season.
There will be barely any sellers at the deadline. Not many teams will be dealing closers.
This is awful
Might not be closing now. Might be someone else's setup guy. They will deal for bullpen help, reports all over this week that they're already trying to do so.
If Porcello and one of Garcia/Castellanos are dangled as bait, there will be takers. That would be two very talented and cheap young players.
Castellanos for a setup guy turned closer? No thanks.
While Hunter was a solid pickup, this is on Dombrowski for putting his eggs in the basket of a young kid that not only had never closed before (Rondon), but never had even pitched in the majors. Closer should have been addressed in the offseason and for reasons unknown, it wasn't. Dombrowski has let this pen go to hell since the end of the 2011 season.
The starters in this series screwed the bullpen. The manager should be able to use the bullpen when he wants to, not when he has to.
The job to find guys who can throw strikes belongs to Dembrowski, not Smokey.
I read the news today, oh boy .. ..
About a lucky man who made the grade
I wouldn't do it either.
But they will be getting bullpen help. Just a matter of what they have to pay. They aren't going to go with this group for the entire season. Too much invested.
The Tigers have been remarkably mediocre away from Comerica. I hope this team can find consistency (the good kind of consistency), because if they do they can be scary good.
