Cooper Already Eyeing Return Trip

Chicago (Ill.) Julian defensive end Demetrius Cooper is planning a return visit to East Lansing after the 2013 prospect earned an offer off MSU's camp last week.

  • Hopefully the staff likes what they see out of his pal Bailey and we offer him as well. These package deals rarely work out but these guys seem like a no brainer. They were flat out owning people at that camp.

Watching one-on-one drills at Sound Mind Sound Body (which are very, very physical for linemen) Cooper and Bailey were the first numbers I jotted down in my notebook. Didn't even realize they were teammates until after the workout, that's how good both prospects were individually.

  • Dan:

Thanks for the info! Yes, love the fact that Cooper and Bailey slapped around the OL (especially the scuM commits) and like a poster stated before in another thread- scuM's LTT had to keep pushing after the whistle to try and recover from being smacked backwards..

Tough with the schollies but would love to get both of these guys if that means getting Cooper. Not to mention they also have a 6'8" 320lb OL teammate at Julian High for 2014.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Hope Cooper realizes that ND picked up 5-star OLB Jaylon Smith, who has some great pass rush skills and closing speed. He might be the DPR a lot of the time and the OLB will be dropping into coverage.

Off of this, UM LB commit Miichael McCray is listed at 6'4 230 . . . but measured 6'1 at the Rivals 5* challenge. Ooops lol.

I noticed that at the NUC 5 star Cooper weighed 205, which is 15 lbs light of the 20lb list weight. This has got to be the sole reason he's not all over everyone's board because he looks like he's got the strength and certainly has gobs of speed. this is completely fine though if he decides to play here. He's got all the time he needs to add weight.
Good to hear on Bailey at the 6'3" mark. I really hope he showed the staff enough to land an offer.

Prospects and high school coaches can tend to get a bit creative in terms of height.

Yeah I thought Juwan Caesar was the next Mutumbo

Ha! 6-3, his official height, is nothing to scoff at. But there were definitely some varying reports out there.

  • Interesting development here could be that both the Irish and us are going hard after Cooper and James. We want both I'm guessing at weak side d end, whereas the Irish are telling both they want them as the OLB. I actually don't think James is as interested in the Irish as he is us or the badgers, but Cooper is. I think a big chip in this could be if we offer Bailey anytime soon.

I mean, why not? We're not going to get Munger and we're already out of it for the other DT's the staff liked. Who are we gonna grab, Peko the JC transfer from Ceritos? That's a stop gap and not a future solution. Kittredge has a couple of years and Hoover moved over. I say, if you're gonna take a shot on a guy, why not be someone like Baily who is clearly the most athletic DT prospect we've seen in a while. He's very undersized right now in the 240lb range but he's gonna get redshirted giving him just over two full years from not to put on another 40-50lbs. Worst case scenario you've got a SDE or 250lb Mike.

  • Is Dantonio starting to recruit more defensive ends, rather than defensive tackles?

He can move them inside two/three years down the road.

Our future solutions are named Scarpinato, Clemons, Knox, and Fennell. Adding Peko would pretty much add to that. Adding a DT is required because we lost Ramondo but we're not exactly dying for DT depth right now.

  • ND just got a verbal from an OLB. They are (were?) recruiting Cooper as an OLB.

    Final Countdown

  • This is ND's 2nd OLB in their class along with 5-star Jaylon Smith. However they did not take any OLBs in 2012 but took 3 in 2011.

  • This looking good for a Cooper commit after his return trip.
