Couch to 5K - Anyone try C25K to run a 5K?

  • Bullwrinkle said...

While I encourage anyone to take up running to help with fitness, there are drawbacks due to the accumulated pounding the body takes. Two other exercise regimens that accomplish the same things as running but with less of a physical impact on the joints and feet, are biking and swimming. An exercise bike is a great investment, and if you have access to a gym with a pool, that's probably the best workout you can get.

We evolved as runners-uniquely so in fact. And several recent studies have debunked the "runners end up with bad knees" myth. It seems that folks who get out and run end up, for the most part, with joints that work better later in life than those how do not.

Newbies training for their first 5k or 10k can definitely run into some common injuries like shin splints, IT band issues, etc if they don't gradually increase their mileage, even if they are only running 10-15 miles a week.

This is true, but it is a very different thing than "running is bad for you because of the cumulative toll it takes on your body". Being new at any exercise opens you up to additional risk of injury, even swimming.

The specific tip at goodformrunning.com that helped me was the one about Cadence where they recommend a target of 180 strides per minute (regardless of your running speed). I was no where close to that. It's easy to count your steps to see where you are at and make an adjustment to get closer to the 180 step/minute cadence.

Damn. I took the advice of a couple of students on the track team and they've helped me shorten my stride but hadn't heard of this. I thought I was doing pretty well but after reading this I checked my strides per minute today and I'm below 150. Trying to get to 180 was not easy so it is going to take a bit more work to get to that kind of pace.

I know that the 180bpm pace is something they specifically give you tips on in the class at Playmakers. You might really benefit from doing the class. It is only one evening.

  • Had no idea about the cadence thing. My strides, both walking and running, are enormous. I will have to download a 180bpm playlist and see how that affects my running.

  • I ran the Greece Marathon 2500 year anniversary race with zero training and a fractured ankle, and was drinking ouzo, wine & beer the night before. Did no research on the race, was informed 3/4s of the way through that is has the most amount of elevation gain of any marathon. I finished, sprinted the last 2 km due to morons telling me the finish line was "right around the corner" three times and then thinking it was at the entrance to the pantheon when in fact it was at the very end...that part nearly killed me.

Was fun. Epic time. Could never do it again, was in a different place mentally then most ever go. Heck, last year thought I was running a 5k, found out I had been signed up for a 10k, had to quit 10k and just do the 5.

As I posted earlier, my pace became MUCH faster and I was less tired at the end after I reduced my stride and increased my cadence. I feared it would do the opposite because I figured I'd be moving my legs much more to keep up with the cadence and that would make me more tired sooner.

That would be awesome but I don't think my wife would be happy with me making the 13 hour drive for a running class biggrin. Why doesn't a great store like Playmakers have a store in St. Louis? They don't have a Grand River Ave but they do have a Grand Ave.

The videos you linked to look very helpful. I'm going to try working with that. I'm meeting with the track coach next week with a recruit so I'll hit him up for some help too.

  • ^Assuming you're talking about St. Louis, MO, have you tried Big River Running Co. (stores in the City and West County). They have free organized track workouts on Tuesday nights.

Yep, could never do it again, got lucky on many levels, and did not have a pace/time I'd ever post (part of the reason I was able to sprint last 2k). But I did it, completed it, got my medal and it was actually slightly longer than regular marathon.

I'll have to check it out. I'm still a couple of hours away from St. Louis but take a trip up to the big city once in a while. West County would probably work well.

I've been hitting up the river trail through MSU campus for my run and it has been really great.

Also, anyone here use the app Endomondo? It is a free app for iOS and android that will track your run via GPS. It will calculate distance, time, elevation, estimated calories etc. The great thing about this app is you can challenge your friends. Currently, my friends and family started a challenge for the month of June to see who can reach the most miles (running, walking, biking, etc).

When you are on facebook or the app, you can see when one of your friends is running. You are able to track where they are going with the map, and also send them a "PepTalk" which is just a text message that will be read out loud by the app to the runner. Usually about 15 to 30 minutes after the workout the results are posted the challenge page.

If we had enough people sign up, it would be fun to have a tRCMB challenge for total miles each month.

Yeah, I had a few using Endomondo so I signed up and really love it so far. After signing up and inviting others, I had a few tell me they use MayMyRun. I think they are both similar, but now no one wants to convert to the other one haha.

Just wanted to give an update (I feel like an Endomondo spokesman on Facebook right now getting my friends and family into it):

This app has been a huge hit with my close friends and family. The challenges and competitiveness really has been a huge help to getting us in better shape. I have about 11 friends and family that use it consistently now and we have the following challenges:
    1) Most Miles for June (all sports)
    2) Most Miles for June (cycling)
    3) Most Miles for June (walking)
    4) Most Miles for June (running)

When I'm on my way home from the office and see that my brother in law is currently biking and has went 15+ miles, it really motivates me to go on a ride. Right now the overall leader has 76.81 miles and I'm in 3rd place with 52.85 miles and the competition started last Wednesday.

Also, you can add the workout in later if you don't want to have your phone on you, all you have to do is log in and you can draw the points on the map and enter your time in and the program will handle the rest.

Once you finish your workout, it will upload to your facebook (if you want) and endomondo to be tracked on the challenge leader board.

  • I did a couch to 10K in 9 weeks. I had to take two short breaks, but essentially ran the whole thing. I've run a handful of 5Ks since I started the program.

If you're a fatass, there's no reason not to do it.

  • strange but appreciated thread bump. Just started c5k

I used to run middle distance and ran Cross and Track in HS (2mile, 1mile and relays)
ran some while at MSU, but all the running with basketball was taking a toll on my knees. stopped to try to recover - then life and kids get in the way of trying to get fit.

Fast forward to now - kids are older and active. started taking Glusomine and chondroitin and it's been a miracle for my knees. Always loved running and heard about this program.

IMO - I like the way the program is laid out. The intervals are there to allow your body to acclimate itself to the movement of running while decreasing the chance for injury (and the aggrevations and frustrations that accompany it.) I downloaded the C5K app by Active.com and its really great (Android) GPS tracks distance (although I've been running on a track) and the audio cues let you focus on just running instead of watch-staring and having to remember what interval is next. also keeps a log and calculates min/mile and program progress. well worth the $2.

I was plesantly surprised that I was able to clear 2.5 miles in the 30 minutes of the first week. (including the warmup and cool down walks) I'm sure I could clear a sub 30 5K if I pushed it - but again I'm not looking to get injured for curiosity's sake. I usually play some basketball after the run too. I'm going to stick to the plan while I'm active and motivated. wish me luck.

thanks for your time. included is a random chick running. enjoy.
