Could you play the same numbers twice for Mega Millions?

  • Just thinking if one of the winners would have played their number twice they'd have 1/2 the payout (2/4) vs their current 1/3

Not sure if you're able to do this but don't see why not

  • Yes but do you really think they handpicked the numbers? Like they were confident that a certain set of digits would win?

Makes no sense to do this. If you have $2 to spend, put it on 2 different sets of numbers. This gives you 2 chances to win, not just one.

I was sure of my numbers and therefore bought 10 tickets of the same. Then I sobered up.

There is some benefit to picking your numbers. Large even numbers are less likely to be picked by others. It won't increase your chances, but will decrease the likelihood of having to split the winnings with someone else.

I don't play but I'd feel like I cheated myself paying double for one number. Not sure it really matters though. And it seems doubling up on a number is contrary to the common goal of spreading your net as widely as possible. Hence the lottery pools.

Ha, I would really love to see the mathematical theory behind this. I'm not quite sure it's accurate to say that in a random draw that any number has better odds of being pulled than another.

I think he's saying that a lot of people pick birthdays for lottery numbers, so those about 30 or 31 are less likely to be picked by people. I'm not sure why large even numbers would be less likely to be chosen than large odd numbers.

Ahhhhh, i really missed the "by others" part. That being said, I'm interested to know why evens are less likely to be chosen.

Favorite numbers are odd more often then even. This was all according to some mathematician on NPR. His overall point was no matter how large the jackpot is, the risk/reward never favors playing a dollar (duh).
