Cowherd yesteday "B1G will get only IU into Elite Eight"

  • Fred Garvin said...

Substitute host on DP show so caught a little of Colin yesterday. Segment on how the Big Ten's over-rated, "deep doesn't mean good", and then 'guaranteed' that everyone except Indiana will be gone by the end of the 3rd round.

I know, just an egotistical obnoxious radio guy doing his thing, stirring the pot. But then I started thinking about who else I would put into the Elite Eight besides us and IU and couldn't really come up with anybody: - SCum's lack of inside game has been exposed and the freshmen wilt in big games. They'll shoot themselves out of it within the first 3 rounds. - Minnesota's faltering badly and other than their victory over us at home they can't seem to finish. - Wisconsin - Bo. 'Nuff said. - Illinois - Some great wins, but don't seem them as good enough to put together a run. - OSU - This would seem to be the best hope outside of us and IU, but still nothing on offense besides Thomas and Matta's their coach.

I would like to see 3 B1G teams in the Elite Eight just to cap off a great year for the conference and prove the doubters wrong, but hate to admit that Cowherd might be right on this one except for us.

This just doesn't work. You can't simply dismiss some Big Ten teams without examining who the competition is. Have you see the other leagues? So dismiss UM and OSU, fine. But tell me all these other teams that are so much more poised to make a run than them?

  • I watch a lot of College Basketball and IMO MSU @ IU and UM @ IU to a slightly lesser degree were the highest level games I have seen played all year.
Felt like I was watching a Final Four match up.

The Big East comparison is a good one. Big Ten this year could be like the Big East in the late 00s. Overhyped. We shall see. Hard to feel that way about MSU, IU and Michigan, but we'll see.

The Big East got over-hyped because they all mostly played cupcakes in the non-con. Then they all had great records going into conference played which made their wins against each other look better and elevated their RPIs.

So 18-21 year old athletes will be too worn from playing 3 games in 3 days to recover with 3 or 4 days rest? I think this perceived effect is way overblown.

I guess there's no way to know for sure, is there? There are examples of teams like UConn making a long run from conference tournament all the way to the title, and there are others (like MSU last year perhaps) that run out of gas after expending a lot of energy.

Some coaches don't put much stock in saving legs during the course of the season (Thad Matta being one), while others like Izzo obviously do. He believes his style of basketball wears on players and he needs solid bench play to keep his stars fresh. Then, come tournament time, he ramps up the starter's playing time and the bench takes more of a back seat.

IMHO, after 30 or so games and who knows how many practices over five months in the toughest conference in the country there is a real risk of fatigue, even among 18-22 year old athletes. There is also the emotional energy expended. We saw how MSU responded emotionally this week against IU after burning up a lot of emotion the previous week against UM.

    Good points.

Also we cant say for certain if a team that makes a conference tourney run and then flames out in the tournament expended too much energy or just had a bad draw, dumb luck, or just an off night. Glad we have a coach like Izzo at the helm. Someone who knows the pulse of his team and can measure the risk/benefit of making a push in the conference tourney.

I don't think so. The Big East's general rule for pre-conference scheduling back then was to play as many weak opponents as possible, and as many home games as possible to survive until the conference season. That didn't happen in the B1G this year.

  • Well, the good thing about this is, he is wrong a lot more than he is right. Every year EsPn does a pick'em for things like bowl games, Ncaa tourney, etc, etc. I always join his group because i am curious about his picks. Let me tell ya, more times than not he SUCKS at picking games lol

Not to mention because of the number of teams in the conference, a lot of the contenders only get each other once. Wisconsin is like that this year, but overall, the 3 main contenders go twice. I remember in '09 Louisville didn't have to play a bunch of the better teams on the road. Helped them get that overall 1 seed.

    Totally agree.

I couldn't find data on how conference champions have fared traditionally in the tournament, but looking at how the BCS conference tournament champions did the past few years was interesting. 2012 was especially brutal for them, but in the previous two years they did pretty well. Something to think about when filling out sheets in a few weeks...

    2012:

    FSU: 2nd round
    Missouri:1st round loss
    Louisville: Championship game
    MSU: Sweet 16
    Colorado: 2nd Round
    Vanderbilt: 2nd Round

    2011:

    Kentucky: Final 4
    Washington: 2nd Round
    Duke: Sweet 16
    UConn: Natl Champ
    Kansas: Elite 8
    OSU: Sweet 16

    2010:

    Kentucky: Elite 8
    WVA: Final 4
    Kansas: 2nd Round
    OSU: Sweet 16
    Duke: Natl Champ
    Washington: Sweet 16

So in the past three years, 7 of the 18 major conference tournament champions have made the Elite 8. Not horrible, but also not great. I guess the numbers would be better if I hadn't considered the PAC 12 a legit conference, as they weigh down the numbers.

Cowherd does his homework by reading articles and watching Sportscenter. The guy rarely watches actual games.

This. College basketball is his least favorite sport, and he has expressed in the past how much he doesn't care about it. While I find him entertaining at times, I will NEVER respect one thing he has to say about college hoops.

Kind of odd considering that his favorite sport is pro hoops. How the hell does he think those guys get there (other than Kobe, Lebron and a few others)?? If Cowherd had it his way, his show would be 100% NBA chat, with Kobe and Lebron filling 95% of the subject matter.

BTW, one of the promising things about this info is that the Big East was probably considered the best or one of the best conferences in the country each of these three years. In that time, their conference tournament champ went Final Four, Champion, and Runner Up. Could be good news for the winner of the BTT this year.

    He's wrong.

We will make at least the Elite 8 and at least two out of OSU, IU and UM will also be there.

Right know I'd bet on MSU and IU to make the Final Four.

  • I think 2 Big Ten teams in the EE is pretty much a lock (most likely IU and MSU). I think scUM has some issues but they probably aren't going to run into too many teams with a front court like ours, so the match ups could be in their favor. Ohio State, Wisky and Minny aren't elite Big Ten teams, but any of them could go on a run as well. They will all be battle tested. When you look at a team like Minny, it's all about their talent respective to who they play. I have a hard time believing they will run into too many teams before the EE with significantly better talent than them.

Minnesota may have good athletes, but they look like some shitty basketball players lately.

    Nice research.
2012 may be skewed though by underdog teams winning the conference tournaments - #7 Louisville, #6 Colorado, Vanderbilt beating Kentucky(still sounds like a mistake) and FSU over NC. Not shocking to see Colorado or Vanderbilt to lose in the round of 32 considering their resume preconference tourney. FSU was ranked 17 before the ACC tourney so losing in the second round is mildly surprising.

Missouri losing in the first round is definitely a shocker but you can't really point fingers at the conference tourney with that magnitude of upset.

By the same token, losing to Vanderbilt had no lingering effects on Kentucky.

So...we are back to inconclusive speculation...
