Craft Beer

  • Ok, so was the craft beer thread completely nuked or something? I guess this will have to serve as the official thread for our craft beer related conversations.

Anyway....picked up some DogFish Head Palo Santo Marron. Anyone have any experience with it? I'm trying to decide if I want to drink it right away or let it age.

  • You really can't go wrong with drinking it now, but I'm not a huge fan of Palo Santo, too "earthy" for me. I'm more of a fan of DFH's Midas Touch, Red & White or Raisan D'Etra.

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?

The store I usually go to carries Midas Touch and Raisan D'etra, but not Red and White. I was between the Palo Santo and Midas Touch. I'm starting to find that I don't drink enough to get through all the different beers I want to try. Just getting through the Dogfish Head lineup is taking me forever.

  • I like PSM. Never had it in a bottle though.

Just drink it. If you decide you want to age some go back to the store. That stuff isn't hard to find any time of the year.

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

  • I've recently started into the North Peak Brewing Company stuff out of Traverse City. I think their bottles are so cool, which is what first caught my attention. They have the Red Stripe stubby bottles and have retro labels that look like they should be on beer from the 50's. The make some pretty good ale's and wheat's. I really enjoyed the "Majestic", it's a wheat ale. Great flavor.

Sorry to hear that... but I'm happy to hear DFH is making waves... I guess the Brewmaster's show has done them well.

It's funny, but I keep forgetting about the show. I watched the first episode and really liked it but I haven't managed to catch it again. I'll have to record a marathon or something. I am curious to see how it affects their business though. I kinda feel like most people who are into craft beer know dogfish head, but it may help them bring some people over who are curious about craft beer. The good thing is, I can't see them sacrificing quality even if they do grow a bit.

    Dr Klopek19856

  • I've never watched a single episode either... which is quite amusing. I own two DFH shirts, my fiance owns 3 and we visited the Milton, DE brewery for a tour back in September.

@ Gadget Guy - this is a Dunkelweizen beer made by Shiner, TX brewery Spoetzl. It is damn good.

i tried the samuel smith winter warmer for the first time this year and loved it.

also love me some dogfish head 60 minute IPA

Haven't had the winter warmer, though I have seen it in the local store.

If you like the 60, you should try the 90. The 120 is a bit much, tastes like women's perfume or something.

The Alehouse 75 is excellent, which is half 60 and half 90, but straight from the tapper is probably the only way you can make it taste good.

ive had the 90 minute too, its harder to find for some reason... never heard of the alehouse 75 would love to try it! (where is the whoa smilie?)

it's not bottled, only served as a draft pint with 60 on the bottom and 90 on the top.

DFH also creates spirits from time to time, we purchased a fifth of their Peanut Butter Vodka in Rehoboth Beach... it was ridiculously good. You could drink it straight up at room temperature.

  • I usually hate winter beers but Peak Organic's Winter Sessions is excellent. A small amount of spices and great use of Citra hops. Their Harvest Ale is very good as well. I haven't had a bad beer yet from them.

A couple good small breweries I've discovered recently are North Coast out in San Fran (one of the best stouts I've ever had and I lived in Ireland!). Switchback and Long Trail from New England. Great Pale's and IPA's

North Coast's Old Rasputin is an amzing stout. I've got one bottle sitting at home and I can't bring myself to drink it.

Your picture doesn't show up for me. Which Shiner beer is it? As far as I knew, Shiner hasn't made a Dunkelweizen in a few years.

I've only watched a couple episodes of Brewmasters, I've got another 3-4 episodes on my DVR but just haven't sat down to watch them. I've read on another beer forum that DFH is seeing a little spike thanks to the program. I wonder how many BMC drinkers will try DFH and get turned off to craft beer though. I like DFH, but if you're just getting into craft beer, I could easily see people getting turned off by them.

  • it's called Shiner Holiday Cheer, and i mis-spoke, it replaced their Dunkelweizen. from another website:

Shiner Holiday Cheer is a Christmas seasonal product offered by Spoetzl Brewery, the company that helped to make Shiner Bock a household name. Shiner Holiday Cheer is, if I'm not mistaken, the first holiday beer offered by Spoetzl and sources tell me it replaces Shiner Dunkelweizen as the Shiner beer for the holiday season.

Winter seasonal beers are typically spicy and warming, with a small amount of fruit flavor sometimes added in but with an emphasis on cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. Shiner Holiday Cheer, however, is a little different. The dominant flavor in this holiday beer is peaches, with only a small amount of nut flavor and spices. Spoetzl brews this beer using Texas pecans and Texas peaches, creating a beer that is like a fruit pie or peach cobbler served with a wheat crust and some nuts sprinkled on top.

  • Been drinking DFH 90 Minute on draft the past two weeks. Twice as good as the bottle. Picked up 2 sixes of Short's Freedom of '78. A guava infused IPA. Also excellent. Highly recommend if you are an IPA fan and you can find it.
