Came across this on Reddit, it's a list of the most underrated and overrated teams based on AP preseason and final polls. Nice seeing MSU as the 9th most underrated team. ND the MOST overrated and SCum as the 8th most overrated.
It's not really scientific or a good judge of a teams worth, but it certainly does spell out what we all know about preseason polls when it comes to the two schools down south.

It won't change anything until we start finishing high on average, but it's nice to at least see some numbers that back-up the claims.

I don't know about you but I'd much rather move the "overrated" side of this ledger. Preseason rankings have a dramatic effect on where teams end up being ranked during and after the season. Much harder to fall dramatically when you start high and vice versa.

Finally, Rich Rod did something well for UM. For three straight years, probably the longest streak in decades, UM did not accumulate more negative numbers for this poll.

I've seen a similar spreadsheet that went back much farther (I believe to 1970). UM was the most overrated team on the comprehensive list, though ND was still up there in the top 5.

One thing I notice is how, among the 10 most "overrated" teams, a season of exceeded expectations is usually followed by a big letdown. That would point to letdowns from Clemson, USC, and scUM this year.

Nebraska is more overrated than UM. Could bode well for us beating these mega powers - UM, Nebraska and Notre Dame.

You have to be rated highly to begin with to end up over-rated. If you are preseason #1, there is absolutely no way for your team to be under-rated. If you are unranked, there is no way for your team to be over-rated. This should be obvious but I'm not sure it is.

I don't see how it could be more obvious. It's not a tough concept. It's a comparison of expectations and results.

Indeed. I wish they factored in wins somehow. If you projected 12 wins for team 1-4, 11 for teams 5-10, etc. it would be quite interesting.
