Damm...I'm interested in the NBA again

  • Ivey Wingo said...

He may be overpaid but outside of Kobe and Wade he's the best 2-guard in the NBA and has been for quite some time. JJ is a very good player.

Brandon Roy was better. It's a shame about his knees. It's great that he's trying to come back, but he was the clear No. 3 shooting guard in the league.

Mike Brown is pretty soft when he's coaching. If anything it'll have to be Kobe and Artest keeping him in check. Not many Lakers fans are happy with Mike Brown, mainly do to his stagnant offense that didn't work in Cleveland and didn't work in his first year in LA. With Nash you really need to be creative and run a lot of high ball screens/pick and rolls. I'm not sure what Brown has in mind but he's going to have to change something. Bynum isn't the guy you want to run those through either where as Howard would fit perfectly.

But it's not Brown's fault that Gasol and Bryant are getting older and that the Lakers dumped Odom. The bottom line is they are not as good as they were a few years ago and that is not about the coach.

Yup. People can blame Brown all they want -- and he's certainly not Phil Jackson -- but the Lakers didn't look any better in last year's playoffs than they did in this year's. And if you think back to the 2010 Finals, it was size that won them the championship in Game 7. Perkins didn't play for Boston, Kobe couldn't throw it into the ocean, but Odom, Bynum, and Gasol just killed in on the glass.

They're definitely not as good but we're not talking about that. We're talking about the possibility of them landing Howard to go along with Kobe and Nash and what it would require from the organization to keep Howard in check. I'm saying that Brown belongs coaching a low to mid salary team where he can win some games by getting players to buy in defensively. I don't think he has the mind or ability to create an offense that would utilize Nash/Howard and Kobe to its fullest.

  • "The excitement will be back at Staples Center," Johnson said in a phone interview while vacationing in Italy. "This guy is so much fun to watch. He's a 'mini-me' of me."

"We're going to get into the 100s for sure with Steve Nash," Johnson said. "It's almost going back to Showtime. From one to 10, there's nine pluses now. Only one minus. We haven't got enough runners."

"The unfortunate thing is we can't take full advantage of Steve Nash's ability if we're just using him in the halfcourt. We're still a slow team. We've got to somehow get a little bit faster or get players who can get up and down the court.""

"I think Dwight Howard is making a big mistake by not considering the Lakers," Johnson said. "Dwight Howard cannot finish a game. What happens is big men put you in a position to win, but they don't win it. Kobe Bryant always closed out games when he was with Shaq. There's no Kobe Bryant on the [Brooklyn] Nets team."

"Dwight Howard can't hit free throws and dominate a game in the fourth quarter," Magic added. "If he wants to be MVP and win a championship, L.A. could be Dwight Howard's town. He could light the whole city up. He could own Los Angeles. Can you imagine the lobs that Steve would be throwing to him? If Dwight Howard ends up with the Lakers it would be the most exciting team we've seen in the last 10 or 15 years, probably since Michael [Jordan] left.

"Kobe Bryant would definitely pass me in rings if he joins the Lakers. Kobe Bryant needs Dwight Howard and Dwight Howard needs Kobe Bryant."

"I want to give Mitch [Kupchak] and Jim Buss credit for Steve Nash," Johnson said. "They showed me something. But if they have the opportunity, keep it going. You can't stop. Unfortunately, you're still not good enough. They're still missing a piece that would help them win it all. If you get Howard, that puts you over the top."

    Great read from Magic Johnson.

    Great read from Magic Johnson.

Magic pretty much nails it. The Lakers aren't built like the Seven Seconds Or Less Suns, and that's half of what makes Nash special. But he's still a great pick-and-roll/probing point guard, and he's going to create a ton of easy shots for anyone he plays with.

Agree, was thinking that Van Gundy might do well in LA but if Howard goes there forget about it.

Ya I wrote the same thing earlier in this thread or another thread. Wait until Dwight is traded and signs elsewhere before looking into Van Gundy. Sloan would be another good option. Somebody that can install a package of pick and roll schemes and yet be creative enough to keep Kobe involved. Much of it will come naturally between Dwight/Nash but Bynum/Nash is another story. The possibilities are endless when it comes to a pick and roll with Dwight/Nash with Kobe coming off the key and Grant Hill + Pau/whoever Pau brings back at the wings. The problem is Mike Brown sticks to what he knows and it's not anything more than a few basic fundamentals.

How can the Heat afford all these players?

  • The NBA is hitting its stride at the right time. It's not back but it's improving. Best part for them might be this being an Olympic year. Bad side is all the talent that won't be on the team (roster will be announced tomorrow I think). This will allow them to stay in the news for a little longer after a solid playoffs.

I wish D Rose wasn't hurt. I'd like to see the Bulls relevant too. Without him they can't be.

Rondo and Allen do not get along. And why does he need to be loyal??? He's at the end of his career and Boston was his 3rd team. He knows boston isn't winning it and Miami and OKC are probably going to be repeating next year.

Miami will be paying the luxury tax....And Allen took less money to go to Miami.

Give in to the NBA... people here hate it while the Pistons are irrelevant, but the league is better than its been in a decade and this year's playoffs were some of the best in recent memory. Next season will be a lot of fun with the Lakers and Nets (maybe) hopefully able to compete with the Heat, Thunder, and Spurs... and who knows about Chicago (we'll see how well Rose comes back) and Boston... another year older, but Pierce and Garnett can still play and if Green comes back and then some of the young talent they have???? Could be interesting.

Unfortunately, the Pistons are still a little ways off, they might sneak into the playoffs next year

So the league is less shitty than it was during a shitty era? Ok, cool.cyclops

I'm I the only one following free agency and these trade rumors?

    Case in point:

    1. The Miami Heat are early 80's Lakers talented. We love to hate them but damm they are good. The could being building a dynasty ala Chicago Bulls 1990's.

    2. Challenger: OKC: We are rooting for them and they currently are the only serious challenge to the Heat.

    3. One player away from challenging: Nets, whaat!!! Only if the one player is Howard who is determined to be a Net with Williams at point, Johnson at the 2 spot, and Wallace at the wing.

    4. Over the hill pretender: the Lakers....Overrated even with Nash

    5. Respect but...: Spurs and Celtics are good but they just can't compete with the young Heat and Thunder

    6. Pistons should be at least entertaing this season.

  • I also have been sucked back in to the NBA. Haven't really watched since '05 besides this season. The Heat/Celtics and Heat/Thunder dynamic has been fun to watch. Should make it interesting with Ray Allen going to the Heat and now Nash going to the Lakers out west.

Very true but he wants another. In otherwords, the Heat are by far the best team in nba so if you can't beat them then you might as well join them is what Allen is saying here.
