Its pretty tough to project true freshman. I mean a lot of people though LT would be taking craps down opposing QB's throats, but then it turned out Tai Jones was the most ready.

However, on that depth chart, the only thing I disagree with is Hicks starting at FS and Drummond 2nd string behind Lewis. I think Drummond will be starting along side Lewis, especially due to our scheme where both safety spots are pretty interchangeable.

I somewhat limited the amount of true frosh, especially considering how we're redshirting all but 1 person (Taiwan Jones) in the 2011 class.

Burbridge also has to work around the grades problem. I think he's got a good shot at playing early but there were too many ifs. I listed Kings as the WR who would get early work.

Actually now that I think about it, Kerrick is probably the most likely to play as a true frosh because he plans to enroll early.

Then why project Kings? I'm not saying its bad or wrong... Just curious why some true freshman are listed, but not others.

I really wasn't sure about what to do with the safeties. Hicks was supposed to be Robinson's successor, but with his injury who knows. Jairus Jones was neck and neck with Lewis until his injury, so he's an option too. Drummond has been phenomenal in the nickle package.

I think out of Lewis, Hicks, Jones, and Drummond, we could mix and match and get some solid starters regardless.

Moreso because both him and Andre Sims are in that quick slot receiver type of mold. Behind Sims I don't think we have anybody like that. That's the only reason to be honest, and like I said above, Kerrick would probably get the first shot due to early enrollment.

He looked ok in a few snaps against FAU. Other than that I haven't heard much about him.

  • Remember the days of Perles, Saban, BW and JLS where MSU was so light in the lineman catagories and recruiting so jumpy that redshirts for quality starters were rare?

Dantonio has gotten MSU to the point where you had better be a stud to start on eith side of the line as a true freshman

  • Have we seen Hicks in game action yet?

Agreed. Even Se'Von Pittman is going to have a hard time getting action as a true frosh. I doubt he will, to be honest. We have a very deep DE rotation.

No, he redshirted in 2010 and I think he's been fighting a back injury that's kept him sidelined this year.

  • That 2 deep on D is giving me final four tix. The offense looks like it will take a step back, but that D is......*drools*

Pittman is going to come in more ready to play than Big Will. He's less "raw". Let's hope we're deep enough that he doesn't play.

Truly says something that LT isn't playing. Imagine that five years ago?

  • Pittman could still use a year in the S&C program and to refine his technique.

With most likely at least 4-5 viable DE options ahead of him, I think Dantonio and co would prefer to redshirt him.

yeah with Rush, Hoover, Gholston and Drone, plus Freeman, Calhoun and maybe even LT in some situations in the mix, I don't see DE as a position we're going to see any true freshmen jumping into next year. It's certainly possible if ready, but it's very unlikely with the depth we have there. Only way I could see Pittman really being out there next year is if Hoover moves to DT.

    Yup.

    Our scholarship DEs next year:

    Gholston
    Drone
    Freeman
    Rush
    Calero
    Heath
    Calhoun

Assuming Hoover isn't part of this equation. Also, Damon Knox may be a DE or a DT, depending on what Mannie can do with him. He is listed at DE at 6'4 274lbs.

  • You're putting LT behind Bullough on the depth chart? I don't know what we're going to do with LT, but he might not get any serious time until he's a RS junior. You think that's going to fly? I mean, he hasn't made any noise about being redshirted, and he got his recruitment over quick, which makes me think he's humble and willing to sit. But I don't know, it seems like the staff has to find a way to get him in the lineup, and I'm not sure he could crack to DE lineup either. Hope he's cool with mop-up duty, you can't just go subbing your MLB in and out in the middle of games.

No offense to LT, but Bullough has given us very little dropoff from Greg Jones and this is his first year starting and only 2nd year in the program. I expect him to be a 3 year starter at MLB. LT would start for two years assuming he can pick up the system well, as well as probably getting time in 3-4 packages.

Also the staff will put the best combination on the field. If that ends up having LT at one of the OLB spots, then that'll be it.

LT is either gonna move to DE or when Norman graduates, he's gonna have to move to SAM and Allen moves to STAR. Unless we start playing 3-4. Otherwise I don't see how LT gets on the field before he is a junior. Bullough has been great. I don't think moving him makes sense.

LT's coverage skills are great, and I don't think they want to move him. LT might take over Norman's spot in 2013.

Regardless, it's a good problem to have that we want to find spots for all of our LBs.

That's cool with me. Let LT take Norman's spot. It basically eliminates the STAR position though, cause LT is big. He's gonna have to be able to cover TEs.

Once Bullough graduates, I wouldn't be surprised to see him move over...

And we haven't even talked about what to do with Taiwan Jones.

Can't we just use Taiwan a hitman? Special teams and then blitz packages to murder QBs.
