Dantonio would like to play PSU for a spring game

  • Interesting...

    Dan Kilbridge @MSUDanK
Dantonio on possibility of playing another team for spring game: "I think it would be awesome if we were playing Penn State. Home or away."

    Trevor Barnes

  • Love it.

  • I'd love to see that. B1GCCG preview.

  • That would be cool, but I think a gm against a d1aa team would be more likely.

I was thinking about this; it'd be a great way to keep rivalries that were lost in the realignment going, like Iowa - Wisconsin. I'm not saying that the Land Grant battle is worth preserving, but given that State won't see PSU until the 2015 season at the earliest, it couldn't hurt, right?

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Best. Idea. Ever.

Can you imagine a "spring game weekend" annual television event where all D1 teams got to play one game against another D1 opponent.

    Don't post poop!

  • We'll pass on showering after road games though.

  • He just wants to get rid of that God-awful trophy.

Hasn't this been the direction college football is going? The demand for college football is overwhelming with large crowds going to spring college scrimmages and practices. . . I've got to admit I'm sitting watching the OSU spring game, and I'm actually entertained. Guess what I will be watching on TV this Saturday. . .

  • I recall we talked about this on the old board...a few years ago...make it a B1G Showcase weekend.

Friday night - 8pm MSU vs Ohio State
Saturday noon - Indiana vs Illinois
Saturday 3pm - Northwestern vs Purdue
Saturday 8pm - Nebraska vs Wisconsin
Sunday noon - Michigan vs Minnesota
Sunday 3pm - Penn State vs Iowa

    ...matchups are variable, of course.

This would be a one weekend showcase.

  • this would so effing rock.

But would be hard to do. The rules for each spring game are different, especially spread teams vs. pro teams when it comes to QB's and the fact that no one wants them hit. You would have to have both teams agree to identical rules with both coaches allowed to stop the games at any point if something looks like it could "hurt" your team. Remember, the most important thing is to walk out of the spring with no serious injuries while you develop your team.

Plus, you would have to have an even number of teams finish their spring practices on the same Saturday.

It could be done, just more complicated then people realize

  • I think it would work out nicely and the players would be very friendly given the no stakes involved. There would prob be one douche who injures a guy with a dirty hit that ruins it though.

  • I would hate to play a D1aa team, I feel like they would want to prove something and it might get ugly.

  • A. It's awesome that MD says awesome
    B. This idea would be super risky. Players could easily get out of hand. It would be best done without pads, or with the opposing team's QB.
    C. I wouldn't have a problem with 7 on 7, padless, flag, or two hand touch.

There would be some $$ concerns, namely who's playing who where, in front of who's fans. Can't imagine they'd do this without charging at least a token admission.

This would be an awesome opportunity to raise some money for charity. Charge a nominal entrance fee that is in turn donated. Preferrably to a local children's charity. The kids could also interact with both teams before the game. I think you could pretty easily raise in excess of $500,000.00 with such an event. The next year you just work with a charity in the opposing team's home town.

We compete with PSU for a blood drive when I was at MSU, why not move the blood drive to the spring game and the winning school chooses the donation place and gets home field next year

In other words, you gotta earn the game

Nah...the best 501c3 organization to direct these funds to is the Spartan Fund. If do anything for any 501c3 it should be for the Spartan Fund.

These other charities are nice and do great stuff, but sending money to any of them at an MSU athletic event is inappropriate.

What? Totally disagree. This should be a bi-partisan effort, meaning it shouldn't benefit the Spartan Fund or PSU's version of such. Besides we're talking about an event that previously has raised little to no money for MSU or the Spartan Fund (which benefits our athletics). Its a win, win.

That could work and that's a very worthy charity. I just have a special place in my heart charities that focus on needy kids. I spend a lot of my free time volunteering with charitable groups that raise money for kids. I just think such an event could have a HUGE impact both monetarily and emotionally for some kids in Ingham County and would be a great opportunity to shape the players on both sides of such a game.
