Darius Morris is Leaning towards Entering the 2011 NBA Draft

  • Diamond Dave said...

First of all, there's a long list of players who have said they would stay after the game and changed their mind when the agents and others get ahold of them. That list includes Shannon Brown, and Webber himself suggested after the timeout game that he'd be back. And Rondo? Um, no. Rondo has a jump shot. Morris is a very good player, but ease up on the drooling. You had better hope he's not Rondo. If he is, he's gone for sure.

To reply to a couple Rondo remarks.

Rondo doesn't have a good jump shot (a passable one, but not good). At least prior to this year he didn't.

Rondo is not 'long'. He's only 6'1' (with huge hands) but he is very smooth and very athletic... neither of which I would apply to Morris.

You must not know me, what do you think I'm a um fan? I think that this board just fails to realize that Morris is actually a good player. I agree with you for sure about players who say they stay ending up leaving, I think it is still up in the air with Morris, and if he's struggling with classes then it wouldn't surprise me if he declares at all. And I take issue with your assessment of Rondo, he has never had a good jumper, it may be better now, but he isn't now and has never been a jump shot shooter. Which is exactly where the similarities are. I'm not saying Morris is as good as Rondo, but I think they are similar type of players, long guys who distribute.

And I never thought Manny Harris was very good, I never understood why Sims wasn't the star on that team, Sims was good. But sure, anything not totally negative about any um player is totally wrong. I mean we whooped on them all year, how could they be any good.

Yeah-From what I remember Rondo's jumper sucked at Kentucky.

Yea, especially consider how hot Hardaway was, I thought they should have got it to him. But it's not like it was a bad look, floaters are tough shots and all but he had a real chance of making it. It's not like there was someone under the rim ready for a lay-up. Morris wanted to be the star, and that's what happens. A time out would have surely been the best solution, but hey, I've got Duke in the final four, i'm not complaining.

Watch the replay. Jr. was slashing wide open to the rim and was actually in Morris' line of vision. Morris consciously shot instead of passed.

Duke Blue Devils 73, Michigan Wolverines 7...

"I don't want to take this Duke jersey off. As simple as that," Smith said. "Every game could be my last."Krzyzewski improved to 900-283 in his 36th season and can catch his mentor and college coach for first on the career list next weekend. He would match Bob Knight with a victory in the regional final, and would pass him with one win in Houston that also would put the reigning national champions back in the title game."There will be a lot of guys who will win 900 games eventually, but to be the first two and for it to be a coach and his player to do it, it's something very unique," Krzyzewski said.Still, Michigan nearly made Coach K wait until next year -- or at least work overtime -- to try for No. 900.Coach John Beilein frustrated Duke by mixing his defenses, and Tim Hardaway Jr. reeled off seven consecutive points down the stretch, capped by a 3-pointer that made it 70-69 with 1:27 remaining."That's all we needed to do was make a shot," Beilein said "This has been [a] pretty common thread with us this year, that we've been able to get back because we play pretty sound defense and we can hit a couple 3s back to back and change a game."Duke milked the clock before Irving's banked-in jumper with 32 seconds left, but Morris followed that with a layup that cut it to 72-71 with 10 seconds to go.Duke fouled Smith with 8.7 seconds left, and he made his first attempt but missed the second. Zack Novak got the rebound and got it to Morris, who headed straight for the lane and put up Michigan's last shot. After the horn sounded, Morris lay face-down on the floor and repeatedly slapped the court with his palm in frustration."Darius got a great shot off, [a] shot he hits a lot in practice," teammate Stu Douglass said. "When it was in the air, I thought it was going down."Hardaway scored 15 points, Evan Smotrycz had 13, Novak scored 12 and Jordan Morgan finished with 10 for the Wolverines, who don't have a senior on the roster. They were denied their first trip to the round of 16 since 1994."It's a group that never gave up the whole year," Novak said of a team that came back from a 1-6 start to Big Ten play to finish "an inch away from the Sweet 16 [and] defeating the defending national champion."This was the first postseason meeting between the two big-name schools since the 1992 national championship game, won by Christian Laettner and the Blue Devils over the Wolverines and the Fab Five. That became especially relevant in the wake of a recent ESPN documentary in which Jalen Rose said Duke "only recruited black players that were 'Uncle Toms" and former Blue Devils star Grant Hill criticized him for those comments. Krzyzewski spent much of this week downplaying that story line while repeatedly declining comment on that era, saying it had no bearing on the present-day team. This time, the Blue Devils slogged through a largely uninspired afternoon and allowed the scrappy Wolverines to hang around. And with 16:59 to play, Krzyzewski had seen enough. After Smith missed a layup and the rebound went out of bounds, Coach K called a timeout and could be seen zipping from side to side in the Duke huddle. At some point during the break, Krzyzewski took off his suit coat -- a clear sign that he meant business -- and coached the rest of the game without it. "I just thought we needed more energy," Krzyzewski said.

I'm wondering if Brundage starts taking Hardaway's playing time next season as he develops. I'm sure Stu Douglass understands he is never seeing the court next season.

No way. CB is a very mediocre player -- way overrated in my opinion (I've seen him play live, twice). I think TH Jr. is better now, than CB will ever be.

Seriously...Morris isn't going anywhere. He's good and UM was better than us this year. Deal. We'll be back. Go watch the Anderson dunk video and stop worrying.

Rondo is the best rebounding guard in the league. I have never seen a guard his size constantly crash the boards against 7 rooters and come up with the ball. Did you see some of Rondo's assist numbers this year? I know before the all star break he was leading the league in assists. I do not know what Morris' draft status would be.

Exactly. and WTF is Irving guarding? The baseline? cheerleaders? Duke's D on that last possession was so putrid. All 5 guys for UM had open looks.

Morris plans to return for junior year
In the moments after Michigan lost to Duke, Darius Morris confirmed he plans on returning to Michigan for his junior season.
“Yep,” Morris said when he was asked if he was definitely returning next season.
This echoes what Morris said a week ago, when he said “yeah, I’m here man. I’m not going anywhere.”

Did anyone ask him why he purposely did not pass to a wide open THJr. for a game tying dunk?

    ByTor20084

  • Not sure why he is so hard to defend on the ball screens. The screener going to the basket is more dangerous than Morris as an outside shooter.

I wish our guards would deliver a pass as hard as he does, although it would likely result in a broken nose or two for our bigs.

Doesn't really sound too committal there one way or another. Of course, he's answering these questions in a manner that would cause the least bit of hardship for him.

Good for him. He needs to land one MVP and get to two final fours to match Kalin. He'll need both those years left and a lot of help and luck to come near Kalins college stuff.

He does have a 6'9" wingspan. I'd consider that long, even if he isn't that tall for his position.

  • I would put money on him staying for another year. Besides, I would like Payne or Nix (or anyone else) to posterize this chUMp next season.

If he attempts to talk trash to Dawson like he did to Lucas, Morris will have a large dent in him somewhere. Dawson has to work on his J, but he's a beast.

Cant fault him for taking a high % shot. That running floater is his bread & butter and he got a good look.

    MarylandSpartan

  • Hardaway may have been open but honestly Morris had the perfect shot. Showing no bias, that's all I hope for with 5 seconds left. It's not a jump shot, it's not well contested, if the defender does defend it he likely draws the foul with the possibility of turning it into a 3 point play and he makes that shot a majority of the time.

If we're in the same situation I want Lucas taking that shot 100% of the time knowing that he's going to make it most of the time even if Roe is partially open to the left of me under the rim. There really isn't much time left, he's up in the air already before Hardaway is wide open which makes the pass much more difficult and there's no guarantee Hardaway catches it cleanly and finishes before time runs out.

Let's be serious here, Morris is coming back. The only thing going against him is he's way too over confident and cocky, or so it seems, and could end up being Manny Harris 2.0. He has tons of potential whether we like it or not. I don't seem him being a lottery pick unless he stays for another 2 years and improves his shot and such but he could come off the bench for a team down the road.

Let's worry about what we can control and that is a talented incoming class with lots of promise. We pretty much nailed every position of need with a stud SF, a couple of athletic Guards who are going to have their roles determined in the next 6 months and Center and F/G combo who have sat a year and should contribute immediately. We are going to have great leadership and I can't wait to see what Appling and Payne can do with their game during the off season.
