I listened to it live and it was really awkward. Pretty obvious though that Stern just said that because he felt Rome's question was a loaded one. Rome has no history of domestic abuse or anything. Rome actually took greater offense to his comment that he has made a career off of giving listeners "cheap thrills".

Rome totally seems like the kind of guy who would beat his wife.

I am probably biased here because I actually do enjoy Rome's radio show, but I think Stern was way in the wrong here. I didn't think Rome phrased it to be a loaded question, but clearly Stern did. To each his own, but there were a million loaded question references he could of dropped. Instead he goes with a domestic violence one and now there's a bunch of articles online now with titles that imply Rome beats his wife and I don't think that is fair.

Rome has this problem of not being funny, so when he tries to be funny he ends up sounding serious, people react negatively. See Everett, Jim for further information

You mean saying something audacious and untrue in the form of a question that could only be considered hyperbole to demonstrate the ridiculous nature of the original question? Yep.
