Delany's New Power Hungry Goal - Ability to Fire Coaches

  • Jim Delany Wants the Power to Fire Coaches - Players - The Chronicle of Higher Education

    TravelinMan

  • Yeah...that's a terrible idea.

    Buffalo Spartan

  • Ummmm..... isn't public pressure and bad media exposure already enough to get coaches fired for impropriety? (Paterno, Petrino, Tressel, etc.) Do we really need to vest that power into a single individual?

    Final Countdown

  • Every school should just allow Delany to coach the teams from a video screen in his new Chicago HQ. That way we can have Michigan and Ohio State win the conference every year like he seems to want. uhoh

  • That's way too much power for one man to have over every coach of every sport at every B1G school. It sounds like Delany is using the Penn State rape scandal as a way to garner power. The reality of the situation is that individual schools are far and away the best equipped to deal with problems on their own campus. What happened at Penn State is awful, but even if Delany had the ability to fire coaches it wouldn't have stopped the crap going on there.

    Izzo Court

  • I could give a fuck if Delany rolled over and died this second. I hate that prick.

  • Somewhere in a PSU thread I warned you all the NCAA and major conference commissioners wouldn't let this Paterno case go to waste if they saw a clear path to more power.

Lets say the Sandusky case came to light five years ago and Delaney along with the NCAA got the power he is seeking for the B1G commissioner. Its very possible that Will Gohlston would no longer be a Spartan this season because Delaney would have had him booted for being mean to Lewan. Izzo could be riding a probabtion after Nix arrest and previous issues with Lucious.

Delaney or any commissioner with expanded powers could make things very difficult for any school that wasn't in permanent suck up mode.

    GRR Spartan

  • There is absolutely no way should Delany hold this power himself. It should be subject to a 2/3 vote of the B1G Presidents.

Minimum. I would go at least 3/4.

  • What would happen if the B1G got an AD that wanted to promote the whole conference? I still argue that the perception of OSU and um being up or down, but the only 2 powers in the B1G has hurt overall. The SEC promotes all their teams and people are scared now of the SEC, any SEC team, not just bama and lsu.

  • There is absolutely no way this could be abused at all. I think Delany has done a lot of good for the conference but this is a terrible idea.

  • He is taking advantage of the PSU scandle so that he has the ability to threaten "uppity" coaches (ie Narduzzi) who don't defer to his beloved big 2

The article discusses firing coaches, not players. So the Gholston argument doesn't make sense.

The Sandusky thing is where this argument for more power is coming from. But, if it did come to light 5 years ago, nothing new would have happened. The pressure from the media and the American population would have forced the same outcome that we have today. Delany would not have saved the day 5 years earlier.

The Izzo type of hypothetical is interesting. What would be cause for dismissal in this situation? Obviously a coach who allows a large amount of drug related crimes to happen could be dismissed, but where would the line be drawn or Delany? Would some schools be allowed more crimes than others? I would have to think that MSU is not in the lead for drug related crimes...

This is one of the most idiotic ideas I have ever heard of in so many ways. Whomever came up with this garbage should be fired and maybe even forced to move to another part of the country.

Ferentz is already ducking for cover if drug related crimes can get a coach fired.

  • Words cannot express how much I hate Delaney!

The ONLY reason people could remotely like him is because he started the B1G network, but as I have mentioned several times, that was a decision he made out of emotion, spite, and anger... It just happened to work out well for him.

What if he told ESPN to pound sand and the B1G network ended up like the Longhorn Network?

I agree with Spartan Mikey, Eff Delaney!

    Unfortunately, it is not...

  • Penn State scums it up, and Delaney's answer is to grab power for himself. Unreal. Like he would have fired Paterno anyway. No, he'll save that move for someone else. What is it with people grabbing power these days.

    Its five o'clock somewhere.

I would think his ability to place players in hospitals would be enough to get fired...

    Io Triumphe

  • Well that would've guaranteed a narduzzi to aTm. Delaney would have tried to fire him for 60 mins of necessary roughness.

Delaney would probably try and fire or force the retirement of Dantonio also for kicking the crap out of scuM and soon to be OSU on a continuing basis.

Every AD should be piased at the thought of the league commissioner meddling like that over their dept.
