Delany's New Power Hungry Goal - Ability to Fire Coaches

  • PRStoetzer said...

Well, wait. Reading the article it seems that Delany would not have unilateral power:

"The proposal, part of a plan being circulated among Big Ten leaders, would give James E. Delany, who has overseen the league since 1989, and a powerful committee of conference presidents the ability to penalize individual members of an institution, should their actions significantly harm the league’s reputation."

Stop being a voice of reason. We should let the typical RCMB overreaction continue.

I'm not familiar with "The Chronicle." Are they related to "The Onion" somehow? There's no freaking way.

It's actually a pretty reputable source...

Sounds as if Delaney's dream is to centralized Athletic Adminsitration in his office.

He'll be fired before the B1G Presidents give that up.

That's what special commitees are for, doesn't need a permanent sitting committee.

Minimum. I would go at least 3/4.

If this is the case, let's take a vote on Urban Meyer right now.

There is absolutely no way should Delany hold this power himself. It should be subject to a 2/3 vote of the B1G Presidents.

The power shouldn't exist, period. It's one thing to suspend someone but another to allow the conference commissioner, a third party, to terminate a contract between two other parties. That's a step too far.

  • May as well just name him Emperor and get it over with. What a ridiculous idea.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

  • Sources tell me he's also looking to impose Prima Nocta if any B1G players get married while in school.

That is the way I read it. Sally, Mary Sue, and Lou Anna can get rid of Gene Smith (tOSU AD)

  • I doubt that the presidents can or will delegate and grant that type of control to Delaney. It might not be legal and could result in lawsuits and other unforseen consequences. No other conference allows this and what puts Delaney above the university presidents? Who would be above him?
If true, it is time to say good bye to Delaney!

    1. Delaney will never get this kind of power.

    2. Even without him obtaining "king of the world" status he seems well on his way to becoming a delusional old coot. I'd agree it's already time to say good bye to Delaney.

    3. I'd hope it would never happen, but I wouldn't be surprised that if Delaney were to be unseated, the B1G would take a run at Hollis. That would truly... suck!

That scenario might not be all that bad. The B1G would have a commissioner that would look out for the interests of all member schools, not just 2.

Hollis would be an outstanding B1G commissioner, but I'd hate losing him as AD. I believe both Izzo's and Dantonio's contracts have stipulations alluding to Hollis being AD.

    Could be a domino effect.

I don't think either Dantonio or Izzo would leave just because Hollis left for another job. I wouldn't want to lose him either but I think there is plenty of talent among his staff in the Athletic Dept. and a very capable successor could be found there.

not sure if serious. The Chronical of Higher Education is the NYT/Wall St. Journal/Financial Times all rolled in to one for Academia.

Ummmm..... isn't public pressure and bad media exposure already enough to get coaches fired for impropriety? (Paterno, Petrino, Tressel, etc.) Do we really need to vest that power into a single individual?

I really think you're overreacting. History has shown us again and again that the when unlimited power is consolidated to one individual only good things happen. Geesh, open a history book.

    9) No repetitive negative posting. You will know repetitive posting when you see it.
What makes a repetitve post? Here is where the line will be drawn. If you come on here and consistently say the exact same thing about the exact same topic day in and day out, that is being repetitive. If you are a one-trick pony, your trick will wear out its welcome.
What about repetitive MSU bashing? The same applies here. If all you ever do is post after an MSU loss or post the same negative flames about MSU over and over just to incite people, you will be considered a flamer and treated appropriately.

  • What went on at PSU is the pretense for this power grab. Would it be used for something like that? Hell no. What would it be used for? Imagine if Delaney had this power last year when Walmart nation started whining after the game. It's possible that Narduzzi would've been fired.
