The fact that no one flipped out on you for this is a pretty good indication that this thread should have gone to wells a real long time ago.

I never said I did. It was compiled by an Australian reporter from the Sydney Daily News who cited US Department of Justice statistics in his report. Just curious, do you think these are made up statistics?

Call me slow, if you must, but I still don't get your point. So you're saying Zimmerman wasn't white and that's important because, um, more whites are victimized by blacks than the other way around? Honestly, I really don't get your point.

The point is that yes, Hispanic is a quasi-racial category. Not sure if you saw Zimmerman's voting registration but it asks for his race and he selected "Hispanic" as his race, it's availble online if you don't believe me. And as the dispatcher also asked Zimmerman if the suspicious looking person was black, white or Hispanic, so there's that too....

just because you and Zimmerman both have little understanding of the concept of "race" does not make "Hispanic" a "quasi-racial category".

Are people from Italy a quasi-race? France? Poland? Spain? Portugal?

I'm honestly asking this question, because I don't know the answer. Isn't Zimmerman's mother Peruvian and his father white? Even assuming that hispanic is a race as opposed to an ethnicity, that would make Zimmerman just as much white as hispanic. He's biracial.

With all of that said, I don't care at all whether Zimmerman is white or hispanic or biracial. I just think it's interesting to see how fired up both sides get about his race while saying that this shouldn't be an issue about race.

Honestly I don't think he shot him because he was black. I think he followed him because he was black and because he's a vigilante wannabe-cop with issues and he created a situation he wasn't ready for and paniced and now a kid walking home is dead. I aslo think if the Sanford PD had launched a real investigation right away this wouldn't even have been an issue. I, also, can't for the life of me figure out why this thing is somehow political (right vs left) or why you have to be racist to fall on one side or the other. Either you think Zimmerman fucked up or you don't, I personally think he did. Which I guess makes me a racist lefty.

Im with this completely. For whatever the reason, we know that Zimmerman fucked up, and an unarmed kid is dead.

I am certainly not racist. I am 1/4 Lebanese and am neither a Lawyer or a 7-11 cashier, so I dont even fit my own demographic.

I think Delvon has a right to say what he wants on this subject, and any other. I applaud it.

EDIT: but I also have to add that I believe Zimmerman pays for this in the court of his own mind worse than he will pay in the court of law. This will, and should eat at him for his entire life. It would if it were me.

Yes that is true. Just like Obama's father is black and his mother was white, but Obama still refers to himself as black and as documented Zimmerman refers to himself as hispanic. He had the chance to list himself as white on his voter registration and did not. So yes you can say he is bi-racial by your definition, just as your definition would also make Obama bi-racial, but I never hear Obama referred to as anything but black, so if Zimmerman refers to himself as Hispanic I think it's only normal that others do as well

It's normal that Zimmerman would refer to himself as Hispanic, but that's not a racial identifier.

What are you so intent on wanting him to be white? Nobody is saying race and ethnicity are the same, the poster was nuanced enough to use the word "quasi" which was understood by everybody but you apparently. Let me guess, he's not really a Democrat either even though he put that down on his voter registration....

It's not a matter of me "wanting" him to be white. It's a matter of what the truth is and you spreading disinformation. It's like you're just making shit up.

HISPANIC IS NOT A RACE! IT IS NOT A QUASI-RACE! IT IS AN ETHNICITY!

I'll ask again: Are people from Italy a "quasi-race"? France? Poland? Spain? Portugal?

Why you insist on speaking on topics about which you obviously know nearly nothing is beyond me. I guess you just like to read your own words?

According to the State of Florida what race is Zimmerman?

And your question makes no sense, there are lots of different races of people in Italy...nobody is saying he's Quasi-Peruvian so your comparison is stupid

U.S. constitution calls for the FEDERAL government to perform the demographic census.

Florida: According to the 2005 census, the racial distributions are as follows; 60.1% White, 17% African-American, 2.1% Asian American, 1.4% others (American Indians), and the remaining 18% are Hispanics or Latino (of any race).

Hispanics may be of any race, so also are included in applicable race categories.

The answer is yes, some of the ethnicities you mentioned were considered almost racial designations at one point in U.S. history. Better examples would be the Irish and Jews. You seem to think "race" is a much more stable category than it really is. It's a social construct, and various categories evolve over time.

So what you are saying that people of different races who live in Spanish speaking countries make up a single race. But not in Italian speaking countries or French speaking countries, etc.. Yeah, that makes sense.

    Is a light switching on?

Yes. This is why the term "Hispanic White" (derided by the right) actually makes sense.

and at one time African born slaves were seen as 3/5 of a person. The Earth was once thought to be flat, that doesn't hurt the crediblity of those who today believe it is round.

I'm not talking about history, I'm talking about today.

I repeat: Hispanic is not a race, it is not a quasi-race, it is an ethnicity. If you have something to add to that or something relevent to dispute it, please do.
