Detroit Pistons early-mid 2000s....who gets to the rafters?

  • None of them, maybe Billups.

Is it just or are the Pistons standards for being put in the rafters extremely low? Seems like anyone who wins a championship and played more than 20 minutes a game gets put up there. How does Vinny Johnson, a career 6th man, get retired? How does Rodman, who only spent a short amount of years in Detroit and did his best work in Chicago, end up being retired?

Personally, you can only make an argument that Ben Wallace should be retired (maybe), and that's it, purely for longevity with the team and what he brought to the team. But no one else should make it up there.

Vinnie was a huge part of the Bad Boys and made the winning basket in the 1990 finals. Without his hot hand coming off the bench I'm not sure they win those titles. He, Isiah and Joe together may be the best 3 guard combo in NBA history. And Rodman was with the Pistons for 7 years with 2 titles winning both of his defensive player of the year awards with and 2 of his rebounding titles. Not to mention he was drafted by the Pistons. He was with the Bulls for 3 years.

I was thinking just Chauncey but I think Ben also deserves the honor. Rip...burned too many bridges.

Enrico, do you understand how important Rodman was to the Bad Boy's? By the way, he''s in the H of F. Neither Chauncey or Ben will get there,

I do but he spent more years with other teams than the Pistons, went nuts and demanded a trade. Is that better than what Rip did?

Just the fact that he started his career with Detroit, was mentored by Daly and was on 2 title teams makes him more valuable than Hamilton. Rodman always played his hardest by the way which cannot be said for Rip.

Wallace and Billups. Ben could have taken more money in Orlando, but decided to bolt to Detroit when the sign and trade with Grant Hill became available. Had only 1 bad year before the Pistons took off with him.

Wtf? The reason why Ben shouldn't get it is because he bolted to Chicago for more money.

  • I liked vinnie Johnson, but when his number went up, anything became possible.

  • I can't believe people are saying Tay should have a retired number. Because of one block? Seriously? Should the Tigers retire Maggs number because he sent them to the World Series?

  • Wallace and Billups.

Rip spoiled his own legacy. (Wallace bolting for a ridiculous contract won't be held against him)
Rasheed no (is Mark Aguirre's jersey hanging?)
    Tay no (is John Sally's)

    Is this a serious statement?

Yes it is. Tayshaun blocked Reggie Miller in a playoff game.

Valenti just said Drummond will be wearing the number 1....looks like Chauncey probably won't be going up to the rafters anytime soon.

    What station is he on?

  • Ben Wallace won 4 DPOY awards with multiple All-NBA teams, All-star games.

    Surpassed 10,000 rebounds (30th All-time)
Averaged nearly 2 BPG over his career
    13th All-time in Blocks

I honestly think Ben would be in over Chauncey.

Yes, I realize that. I was asking if you were serious that he deserves his number retired because of one play.

  • We should retire Korie Lucious' number. I mean he did hit a buzzer beater in the tourney...

Ben Wallace may even make the Hall of Fame with those numbers....coupled with the fact that he has played more games all-time in the NBA of anyone not drafted.

Big Ben's number should be the only one considered for retirement....I think he deserves the nod.

no joke, def one of the best plays in pistons playoff history, it would have been even sweeter had the pistons won it all that year. i think they lost to miami in the next round?

still really a shame that group only brought home 1 nba title.

that was the EC Finals. Then they beat the Lakers.

2005 they beat Miami in 7 and lost to the Spurs.

2006 they got hosed against Miami.

thanks for checking... if prince indeed made that play during a title run, its absolutely one of the most epic plays in pistons franchise history.

I absolutely agree that Prince's block is one of the most epic plays in Pistons' franchise history (and it's probably my favorite non-MSU sports moment that I witnessed).

But I don't think you retire Prince's number.

Big Ben's number gets retired, without question. He has an outside chance at HoF (and knowing how low the NBA's HoF standards are, I wouldn't be surprised to see him make it), and goes down as one of the Piston's best all-time players.

Billiups case revolves around him being Finals MVP in 04 and his general leadership of the team. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him up there, but wouldn't view it as bad if he didn't make it.

If Rip hadn't pissed away over his last couple seasons the substantial goodwill he had built up in Detroit, his number would probably go up there. All-time leading playoff scorer, after all.

Basically, as others have pointed out, the 00s team was a TEAM in the truest sense of the world. Hard to differentiate them. Ben's DPOY, All NBAs, etc. distinguish him. Billiups' Finals MVP distinguishes him. I think the rest of the group just doesn't have enough to push them into the rafters.

    voodoochile

  • Big Ben and Billups. Wallace was probably the best defensive player of the decade. Billups was the finals MVP, and the team leader throughout the run.
