Dining in Grand Haven

  • I have had some of their beers here on the east side of the state. Looking forward to visiting the brewery this summer.

Edit- in regards to Odd Side Ales

  • The Mrs and I have had several meals at Deelight that we've enjoyed.

    Blackthorne

  • Some Grand Haven dining thoughts:

    1. Bil-Mar. This place has been there forever. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner there back in 1983. Over the 30 plus years I've been coming to the Grand Haven Area, including the last 9 as a resident, the food has varied greatly. For awhile it's really good, then it's terrible. I don't know why; perhaps it simply depends on the talent of the current chef. I haven't heard which phase they're currently in (good or terrible). However they do have great views and it is a nice place to have a drink and watch the sunset.

    2. Snug Harbor, Dee-Lite, The Grand, The Theatre Bar, and Jelly's have the same management (see link below). They don't advertise it but if you eat at Snug Harbor you can order stuff of of Jelly's menu. So, for example, if you want to sit on Snug's deck, but someone in your party wants sushi, they will accommodate you.

    3. The Kirby House host 3 different restaurants. The Grill Room (steaks), The Kirby Grill (eclectic), and K2 (wood fired pizza). I've heard good things about all 3. I like Kirby Grill but have not been to the other 2.

Another place I like is Pruebelo in Spring Lake for Mexican. It's pretty good as long as you're not expecting anything truly authentic. Also the place has a big negative--no alcohol served.

Have a great time in Grand Haven!

I figured that everyone I hang out with doesnt go there is because it's not accessable by boat. I have only been there a couple of times and didnt think it was that bad.

Best Boat Accessable: Old Boys Brewery

good call. they have good eats too.

  • For breakfast, I'd recommend Morning Star Cafe on Washington. It's small, so be prepared for at least a 30 minute wait on the weekends, but it's well worth it and trumps Dee Lite, IMO.

For pizza, I like K2 b/c of its proximity to downtown, but you can't beat Fricano's or Clover Bar.

Porto Bello is great for a nice dinner, and they have live jazz most nights.

Kirby has great food and has a live band later on in the evening. Kirby/K2 have sort of a Rum Runner's atmosphere at night where downstairs is a live band and upstairs is usually a younger crowd.

I'd also recommend Two Tony's in Spring Lake. Great food and drinks.

Also, Butch's Beach Burritos is a must. I try to get something from there every time I'm back in GH.

There is an Applebees in Grand Haven.

    Your welcome

Ha ha...Was just in Grand Haven last week and kept mentioning that as a suggestion to the wife, older son has food allergies and we know what to order for him there, she wasn't having it. Went to Kerby House one night and hit Jack's at the hotel the other...Kerby was good but a little slower than we wanted

  • Used to eat at K2 every single Saturday night with friends after we had boated all day. We would tie to the wall and head to K2 for some pizza.

One Satruday, we did our usual Saturday tradition and about 3:30 in the AM, I wake up with a horrible feeling in my stomach.. I run back to the swim platform and begin hurling into the river. As I am laying there, I suddenly hear some movement in my buddies boat that is tied next to me. He appears and looks green. He begins hurling into the channel. 10 min later our buddy on the third boat out joins the party.

I have not eaten at K2 since, which has been about 2 years now.

  • Grab an outdoor table at Odd Side Ales for some nice craft beers. They don't serve food but you can bring your own. When you get hungry just walk across the street to Mr. Kozaks for some killer gyros and Chicago dogs to go. Kirby Grill for some pub grub or head upstairs to the rooftop for some tasty wood fired pizzas at K2. For the best breakfast in town go to Morning Star Cafe.

  • Live in GH--- Bil Mar is a waste of time--no locals eat there; Kirby,,,Fricanos and Clover are all good for pizza; Snug has a great view and ordinary food; Portobello is good but not great; Rosebud is good and right down town; Jack's--- Holiday Inn-- has good food and a great location. Dee Lite is a great breakfast spot that is very busy on weekends..

Michigan State football--- It is what it is!!! GoGreen!!!

  • Very underated but bit pricey pizza in Grand Haven is Palermo Pizza!! Well worth the money, but cheaper if you pick it up and dont have it delivered

This may sound crazy, but drive up to Muskegon and hit Mia & Grace. The place is fantastic and reasonably priced. On a different level than pretty much anything else in the area.

Or go the other way, a little further, down to Holland and the OBI.

This place looks good. Might make the trek from GR sometime to try it

Ended up going here this evening. Very good salmon crusted with pistachios. If you're in the area check it out.

  • Be very careful if you will be drinking in Grand Haven. Their local police and Ottawa County Sheriff are notorious for a propensity pull over drivers with out of town plates for "random" breathalyzers.

if you want something classy try Rendezvous or tip a few.

Oh my God.... Though a funny post, it reminds me how much I miss the burritos at the Tip. Many years ago they were awesome. Are they still good?

Regarding where to go in GH, it depends on what type of food you want.... But the choices are a bit limited...
