Do Harris and Payne stick around for next season?

  • Just recently, thoughts of Payne going pro started rattling around in my head. He's just has that NBA look.

Must say, with Nix gone next year, Payne will be the uncontested man. If he flat-out dominates, (which I think he would) he could really raise his draft stock.

    It's a tough call.

Harris? Not sure. He's the best freshman MSU has had in awhile, no doubt about it.

  • Payne has worked so hard to get where he is academically, it would be a shame for him to quit before he graduates. Basketball wise I think he's ready though.

Harris can probably go whenever he wants too. I have no idea if he wants to stay or not.

Dawson has way too many holes in his game to work on, him going after this season would be an extremely bad idea. He needs at least a summer to develop on a jump shot if he wants to make it in the NBA at his size.

payne isn't leaving. his degree is more important to him than basketball is. I dont think he goes anywhere unless he's consensus lottery pick, which isn't happening

Gotta think turning the ball over any time Oladipo looks at you, or whenever you dribble near anyone within 15' of the rim isn't a huge plus in the Scouts minds when evaluating a 2/3 for the next level.

I'd say he could play himself up to about #10 or so if he finishes the year like he has played the last month or so. His motor was one of his biggest weaknesses and of late of his biggest strengths.

This. The tournaments, in particular the NCAA, are HUGE opportunities for players to raise their NBA draft stocks.

I don't really buy into that.

I think it raises their profile among fans (and talking heads) if they have a big Tourney, but the scouts do this for a living. Scouts find players in Europe, Africa and South America. If an NBA scout didn't know who Adrien Payne or Gary Harris was before the NCAAT, he'd be the worst scout ever. They start keeping tabs on hundreds of players at AAU tournaments when these guys are in their early teens.

The bloggers and talking heads aren't mentioning names to show you how smart they are, they're mentioning names because it will get the attention of a fan base. They could just as easily talk about some Euro that is moving up draft boards, but they don't bother to find out who those guys are because their audience doesn't GAF.

  • I think Payne's ceiling is higher than top 10, he could move into the top 5 with a good senior season. He's got all the tools you need to be an NBA starter. 6-10 with a 7-4 wingspan, can jump, can run, has a pretty shot, and can rebound.

What he does need to learn is to score with his back to the basket. I could see him being a 15 and 9 guy next year and being a top 5 pick after that. You do not see many big men with Payne's skill set at the college level.

  • If Harris and Payne both are rated first round I think they go. Hope to be pleasantly surprised as I think another year would be good for MSU and help improve their stock.

Dawson has a ton of things to work on and really needs at least one more year here and a full healthy summer of shooting and ball handling. Not a knock on the kid but losing last summer to injury recovery really hurt him. He needed that development time.

Fully agree. I was saying that he couldn't get much higher than 10 this season, even with it being a weak draft.

I think Harris stays unless we at least make it to a final 4..

I think Payne most likely goes though he could become a dominant player with one more year.

Burke is gone, Hardaway i'd guess is 75% gone, I'm not sure GR3 is going to have the ability to leave early.

Talk about a completely ignorant opinion. Harris is likely to stay barring him going absolutely nuts in the tourney and MSU wining the whole thing. Payne has stated MULTIPLE times that he wasnts to come back and get his degree, that it's very important to him. Would be utterly surprised if he went.

Burke isn't as much of a lock to go pro as you think. He's probably gone, but not 100%. Hardaway is tougher. He is 50/50 going pro at best, and Id guess hes leaning towards coming back.

The thought of GRIII going pro right now is more laughable than Dawson going pro.

Depends on who we have coming in... That is not a particularly pleasing line up to have with them gone, You have Appling... and who else? Costello/Kaminski/Guana as your bigs with Appling/Trice/Valentine/Byrd as the Guards/Forwards. Is solid middle of the pack B10?

Yes. Middle of the pack is a solid team. MSU could finish 2-5th this year and it would still be a good year because if how good the BIG is. And even when we have seasons like 07, with little depth, Izzo reloads quickly.

i feel that a big part of Payne's success this year is because of Nix. Nix is a senior with a great low post game that takes A LOT of attention off of Payne, letting Payne move around more on offensive. Next year if Payne stays, all he has on the other side is the sophomore Costello and Gauna. I think having Nix on the floor with him this year allows Payne to show the NBA his true skills and growth potential. Not sure Payne would thrive as much next year and if his stats were to the say the same, the NBA could view that as a negative. I think Payne is at highest collegiate peak this year and he should go pro if he wants to maximize his draft stock and earn a bigger contract. If Payne is not worried about the NBA so much and really wants the degree, than its his choice to make.

This. Payne reminds me of Kevin Durant but of course not that good. An athletic, talented big man with range who rebounds well.

Kevin Garnett is more accurate stylistic comparison. Or young Rasheed.

  • It would be nice to see kids stay and actually peak in college as opposed to leaving and making people wonder.

Its unfortunate that the comparisions aren't realistic since Payne only has the 25 minute capacity lungs.

Durant handles the ball as well as most guards.

Seems to have gotten a bit better. I think he played ~32 mins and checked Thomas when we beat OSU.

  • With his current game I see Payne as an NBA role player off the bench, but not a starter. I don't think lottery picks are typically used for non-starters. His shot is good, inside game needs work, and still don't know who he defends at the next level.

Rough? How many "rough" years do we have under Izzo? Dawson, Payne, and Harris could leave and we would still find a way to be solid.

HA HA HA yeah right, with zero 2013 recruits? nono

They are used on big projects though. He can shoot FT, block shots, finish strong (sometimes), and hit jumpers out to the college 3 line. Most teams don't ask a whole lot else out of young bigs.

Not sure why people aren't worried about next year quite frankly. One injury/foul trouble away from disaster (read: Byrd playing like 20 mins a game in a Byrd, Costello, Guana frontcourt)

I disagree. I think Costello and Gauna will both command enough attention on offense to allow Payne to play his game. I don't necessarily think Costello/Gauna will always warrant a double team (though I certainly wouldn't put it out of the question in some games if they're hot) but they're not Idong Ibok either, no offense intended.

Im not saying that there isn't a single recruit coming next year, but as of right now there isn't any recruits committed. Talk to me when someone commits.
