Do Harris and Payne stick around for next season?

  • Rogue Leader said...

I disagree. I think Costello and Gauna will both command enough attention on offense to allow Payne to play his game. I don't necessarily think Costello/Gauna will always warrant a double team (though I certainly wouldn't put it out of the question in some games if they're hot) but they're not Idong Ibok either, no offense intended.

Payne would be filling the Nix role on the block and those guys would be stretching/slashing in that scenario... I would assume.

It would be nice to see kids stay and actually peak in college as opposed to leaving and making people wonder.

Not sure why people aren't worried about next year quite frankly. One injury/foul trouble away from disaster (read: Byrd playing like 20 mins a game in a Byrd, Costello, Guana frontcourt)

I am worried, that frontcourt would be TERRIBLE

Classic. You were also probably front and center declaring this team a waste after UConn and Miami.

If you're going to take the argument that "until we have a commit we don't have anything" then 2017 must terrify you because we have nobody on the roster at all.

And teams aren't typically rotating a guy off of Payne to double Nix. Its usually whoever is guarding Dawson or a guy sagging off of the wing. It seems pretty clear that Costello is being groomed to play the 5, Payne next year would not be relegated to playing a much different role than this year.

Im not saying that there isn't a single recruit coming next year, but as of right now there isn't any recruits committed. Talk to me when someone commits.

Kaminski redshirted, so we get him no matter what.

We look good for Schilling as well.

And there may very well be a senior who graduated somewhere else that wants to finish his career with a winner, a la Brandon Wood last year.

And less likely, but still possible, is that a committed player flips.

Including Kaminski, I think we end up with at least 2 new players available, and 3 wouldn't surprise me one bit.

    Agreed.

Kevin Garnett is more accurate stylistic comparison. Or young Rasheed.

I disagree. KG does not have the mobility and speed of Payne. Payne is more athletic but not nearly as strong. Sheed was never as athletic as Payne either.

Meh. They leave earlier and earlier in basketball.

    bozorules

  • I think they both come back, but Dawson makes a completely boneheaded decision and goes pro.

We aren't at Spring signing day yet. Very good chance we will get at least one player, maybe more.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

well... i think costello has shown some great promise in the last couple of weeks, certainly shown his desire to be a tough hard-nosed player and he scraps and he hustles and rebounds but... bringing this conversation back to AP.... AP would like to have another consistent offensive and rebounding threat down low to keep the defense honest and allow AP do the things he likes to do which is move around and spread the floor and open up the offense.
We dont know yet if Costello or Gauna (or a combination of their talents) can do next year enough of what Nix does this year to allow AP to thrive playing "his" offensive game.
if AP has to shoulder a much larger load of the rebounding, or score more points in the paint, that means he cant roam around the perimeter as much, his PPG could drop.... or he could be more likely to get injured if he is doing all the banging down low, and... if he has to play a ton more minutes because the team needs him on the floor scoring and rebounding, then it would be interesting to see if his lungs could handle more minutes.

all signs point to this being the best year for Payne to go pro, but like i keep saying, he can make the best decision for him.

Gauna will not worry opponents. I really, really , hope I'm wrong, but this post is on par with Schott thinking Payne is Durant.

Forgot about Kaminiski, he could help open things up with his shooting, but he's also a bit limited length and defense wise... And we don't know if these shoulder issues are going to be like Byrd's foot and linger/plague him.

Not worried about the frontcourt at all. Costello, Payne,Dawson and Kaminsky.......and throw in Byrd or Gauna. I would be more concerned about the perimeter with injuries .

Dawson is turning it over 2.2 times a game and he is not a part of the offense that should be getting a high turnover rate. He really needs to stay since the scouts are going to have the film on him. I don't think it will look good enough to be drafted anywhere near where he would have to be to consider going.

Yes. Middle of the pack is a solid team. MSU could finish 2-5th this year and it would still be a good year because if how good the BIG is. And even when we have seasons like 07, with little depth, Izzo reloads quickly.

Meh, It's solid for UM's standards but aren't ours just a bit higher? It would be good considering who we had, but it wouldn't be a "solid" season by MSU's standards imho.

We're in deep shit if Harris leaves quite frankly. The team is just obviously WAY WAY better when he's in the game.

Both ends of the court. Who plays the 2 if he leaves? Dawson? Byrd? Trice and Appling play 40 in a lilliputian backcourt? Thanks Kearney.

We could really use a Rashi Johnson (but who doesn't suck) type JUCO for 2 years.

Byrd, Guana, Kaminski have proven nothing. Payne could be gone. Fully agree that the perimeter is way thinner.

Agree. If everyone returns, we are better next year. If we lose anyone, we play bubble games ..........and HOPE certain players step up or demonstrate why Izzo recruited them.
Hell, if this weeks labatomy doesn't take hold of Appling and Dawson, this season may end alot sooner than people expect.fingergun

  • Don't forget that Harris's age is also a factor, he's a very young freshman in college just turned 18 in the Fall. He's got a mother who played in the WNBA, she's going to know that he could really benefit from another year or 2 at MSU.
