Do you go into chain restaurants when visiting great cities?

  • I don't get why people would go into "hard rock" or chillis or outback or anything like that when they're in great cities. I say that only because everytime my extended family has an occasion to meet in a classic city for a day somebody will suggest a place like that and I'm always saying WTF? Might as well go to burger king.

  • I have a hard time dealing with the fact that not everyone holds eating in high regard. Some people really don't give a damn. Some people are perfectly content with packaged foods, consistent chain restaurants, and staying in a comfort zone.

They're missing out millions of unique experiences. But, these things aren't important to everyone.

I, on the other hand, go to chains when all other options have been exhausted. Or, when I just have to have a 1/4 pounder with cheese. Otherwise, I enjoy the adventure and get a rush out of trying new things.

When I'm with my side of the family, it's always a chain...particularly Outback and Carrabba's. When I'm with the gf's side of the family it's never a chain. Personally I'm equally satisfied either way.

But wouldn't you like the taste and feel of the city your in? From a piece of beef a restaurant is known for to the local entertainment up on stage? I've done both but prefer the small local stuff

  • Never ever ever.

In fact, the GF and I had a very nice sized argument because the day we were leaving Paris she wanted to get a Starbucks coffee.

She'd got her coffee, but I waited outside for her.

    Always Smooth.

    This.

I detest going to chains even in my own town, let alone in a new and unique place. I just don't get it. The only time I go to chains is when there is a time constraint, I am just stopping through, or I am in a small, tertiary type town for a short stay.

A few months ago I went on a work trip with a few coworkers to Palo Alto, CA... The one night we had the liberty of going to dinner alone and at our own choice, the two people I was with insisted on Bucca Di Beppo.

    Never again.

  • What's worse? Going to Burger King in Great City for food or going to the movies in Great City as entertainment?

Sneaking burger king into a movie you've already seen while in a great city?

  • Personally, I like to stick to the local restaurants instead of the chains, but I can understand why people stick to chains. Lots of unknowns, people don't plan ahead or don't want to spend a few minutes figuring out what's around them, and they know the chain is generally low-risk. I love when people come to Chicago and i can help direct them to local places.

  • I don't go into chain restaurants at home when not visiting anywhere, when I'm travelling, or when visiting a great city. Chain restaurants are terrible.

  • Who cares? What they eat, doesn't make you shit.

  • The only time I would go to a chain in a different city is if it were a regional chain I couldn't get back home (for example, I've never tried In-n-Out).

speaking of which, when I was in NYC, I was appalled to learn that there are no movie theaters in the theater district. WTF?!!?

...or when the chain you like isn't available in your city and you make a road trip specifically for the goodness the chain offers.

Amen brother, amen. Absolutely boggles my mind too. My brother who lives in Michigan always goes to outback on his annual golf trip in California...to get the exact same steak he gets a mile from his own house. When I bitch about it he doesn't get it and I'm incredulous that HE doesn't get it.

  • Last year Taco Bell was test marketing something called the Dorito Loco hard taco. Basically, it's a taco shell made from a nacho cheese Dorito.

Well, there weren't any stores near my house that were part of the test, so I drove my friends 965 miles to try out this new taco. It was well worth the effort. My friends and I stood around my car in the parking lot, eating the Dorito Loco. We didn't speak at all, we just ate the wonderful taco, smiling and winking at eachother. It was a special moment for us.

FWIW, the French don't know how to make coffee. They drink a ton of it, but they don't do a good job with it at all. I think there have been past threads on here about that. I say this as someone who drinks coffee black, and enjoys french culture.

Can you describe some of these great cities and what POS place your family is trying to get you to eat in?
