Does Ken Holland pull the plug on Mike Babcock sooner or later

  • GRR Spartan said...

With the exception of Bowman 1993-2002, the Red Wings have had Demers 5 years, Murray 3 years then Bowman followed by Dave Lewis for 3 years and now Babcock who is starting his 7th year.

This isn't a first year coach or a guy with a team full of rookies playing for a tight fisted owner.

Babcock has 2 first year assistants with him on the bench and perhaps thats part of the current issue. In case you missed it it hasn't been 2 weeks yet but this is the NHL and Babcock has been there longer than anyone except Bowman.

Again Another 2 weeks of losing and only have 2,1 or 0 goals per game is going to force a change.

I hope things turn around but after the fast start its surprising the puck is going into the net so few times. The defense seems to be there but the offense is MIA.

GRR, I usually like your posts but your are severely overreacting. Everyone knows the Wings are a very good team and with a little patience they will be fine. They will end up with about 100 points and go fairly deep into the playoffs. Babcock is a great coach and the Red Wings do not make stupid decisions based on anecdotal issues.

After a 5-0 start the Red Wings have lost 6 in a row with very little goal production.

Maybe the team needs to hear a different voice or is it the new coaching staff as a group aren't getting the changes needed for more goal production?

You are a Moron.. Please don't ever post again. we need to improve our lines. I think Ken Holland needs to get better players and get rid of Bertuzzi and Homer. This team is kinda old, we need to get more players like Helm/ younger players.

  • The Wings have had great goaltending and lead the league in shots on goal. They are having issues getting guys in front of the net.

It's so early in the season that it's not time to panic, but it is time to becoming increasingly concerned as losses pile up. What likely will happen is that the Wings will end their drought and go on another tear. Right now the team just needs to play well enough to get to the trade deadline where Holland will go shopping and inject some life into the team. The only way Holland seriously considers getting rid of Babcock is if it looks like the team is in a realistic spot to miss the playoffs by the All-Star break.

This. Ken Holland has never been one to make hasty decisions. He had plenty of cap space to get a big name replacement for Rafalski this year, but wisely decided that the money being thrown around to the top free agent defensemen was ridiculous and took the more conservative approach.

  • Wings are fine. Puck's just not going in but every team as a stretch like this at some point in the year. Hopefully ours is ending now.

I think Dan Roushar would make a hell of a replacement. He'd fix that offense pretty quickly.

    Yeah, that's brilliant!

Poor goal production? Sounds like it's way past time for the Wings to fire their OC and get a new one. If they hire Roushar away from MD, that provides TWO tRCMB solutions to fix the complaints from the high IQ's displayed here.

  • Its the bertuzzi curse. Seriously. We will never win a cup with him on roster. His moments of flash don't make up for his overall play, fact that he's a tweener in terms of role and the simple fact that he doesn't fit in the locker room.

2 years between stints with wings we are in both cups. More than a coincidence.

I do miss draper and still don't agree with not signing him. 6 min a game and all the faceoffs and leadership you could ask for.

  • I dont remember the last time the Wings played this bad AND had bad luck at the same time. The puck isnt bouncing their way, all of their shots are getting blocked, they have run into some pretty damn good goaltending, hell ever the refs are getting in our way.

I know Babcock is a good coach and they shouldnt even consider firing him. My only concern about him is that there are several players that do not see eye to eye with him. Not eye to eye like they did with Bowman but there are players who dont want to play for him and wont come here.

Keep your apples and oranges talk up.

Keep on underestimating the possible effects of 2 new assistants, the aging team and Babcock's visible frustration.

I hope I'm wrong. I see what PR and Izzo Court say about Holland's ability to see what the team needs from a personnel standpoint but I don't recall seeing Babcock as aggitated as he appears on the bench (towards the Wings play, not opposing players) since he's been behind Detroit's bench.

no need for a doofus like stang to apologize.

If I'm wrong I'll post that in 30 and 60 days . Just admit I was looking too far ahead.

If a change is made I won't expect any critics to own up any posts here. After all its the RCMB.

Holland brought a bunch of guys back who don't score. Bertuzzi shows flashes then vanishes for long periods, Hudler has done nothing since leaving for Russia, Cleary is a reclamation project that seems to have panned out, then doesn't seem to. Holmstrom's been a place holder for years. You could blame it on Babcock, but he has to play the players he has.

Usually, for the regular season, the Wings pick between December, January, and February and just about win all of their games in two of the three.

  • What a fucking dumb thread. Babcock's not going anywhere. He's more than proven himself. It's the players giving the puck away in our zone. It's been a problem since Brad Mcrimmon was the defensive coach here. In my mind it's the players, being too lackadaisical with the puck.

The new defensive coach, from WMU, would be on the hot seat really....

  • The Wings replaced both assistant coaches and lost two veteran leaders in Draper and Osgood. That's a lot of turnover. You have Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Kronwall as the Captain and Alternates. Those guys are great, but I don't see them as fiery leaders in the dressing room who are going to really bring the intensity like Draper. Osgood also helped keep the locker room loose with his demeanor. I don't know who can step up and really take charge of the team from a player's perspective.

As far as Babcock. Some guys don't like him. That's a fact. Shanahan and Yzerman were rumored to have serious problems with him back in 2005-06. There have been rumors of tension for years. I do think the guys respect him and don't think they've tuned him out, but I do think there are probably growing pains with Blashill and Peters.

The Wings offensive system is sound. They are possessing the puck and generating a ton of shots on goal, but just aren't playing with that extra edge and the pucks aren't going in. Jimmy Howard is playing really well. Once some more chances start going in and the Wings clean up some of their defensive responsibilities, they could go on quite a streak. Especially if Hudler, Franzen, Filppula, Bertuzzi, and Cleary start to provide some scoring.
