Heart of a Spartan: The Story of a Michigan State Football Renaissance is a two-year project that survived a coach's heart attack, an author's cancer surgery and a 42-point bowl loss. It chronicles the winningest two-year period and most exciting stretch in MSU history. It's divided into two sections _ a historical narrative, with input from 33 of the greatest Spartans of all time, and an all-encompassing look at the last two seasons and the people who made them possible. The book, my seventh, is 288 oversized, full-color pages, with fabulous photography from Matthew Mitchell and a Foreword by Tom Izzo. I haven't found anything that tells and illustrates the story of a collegiate program in quite the same way. I don't know of another book that can make you laugh and cry, help you win a ton of bar bets, supply ammo to win arguments with fans of other teams, make you say, "Man, I didn't know that!" or "What a great photo!" AND be the perfect holiday or birthday gift. Personalized copies are available on the website. We'll have close to a dozen signings in Michigan and other places around the country, as demand dictates (including two in Chicago on Aug. 19). Locally, everyone is invited to our book launch party at Reno's East from 6-8 p.m. this Thursday and at special events at Walnut Hills CC, Forest Akers GC, Student Book Store, Schuler Books (Eastwood) and Everybody Reads over the next six weeks.
