Linux and its variants are widely used in scientific computing. As a general-purpose desktop, no, not really.

I still do. For general use it's the fastest and most simple OS.

Yea, most of science is run on Linux (cyclotrons, beamlines, a lot of cluster, etc.). Much too cost prohibitive/time consuming to run Windows.

I'll admit that nearly every other iteration of Windows is pretty damn nice (95 sucked, NT rocked, Me sucked, 2000/XP rocked, Vista sucked... 7 rocks...) and it is nice for some business applications, but the versatility to be stripped down very easily to just the barebones needed for high uptime and low overhead is amazing.

I've run "protein folding" things on a 20 processor cluster @ State that absolutely rocked the chip with very little else wasting time.

On the other hand Linux sadly sucks for home use. Windows is the perfect combination of user friendliness and ability to be meddled with for home use IMO, not crappily child proofed like Macs but the pile of nuts and screws in a box that Linux is.

If you are bored and curious, install VMWare Player (free) and install Ubuntu (download the ISO and open from VMW Player) on it. Both free, it lets you boot up Linux as you want, and uninstall in five minutes when you're bored.

I am on mint right now. I use linux for just about everything. Have it set on duel boot linux mint / windows 7. Pretty much just use windows for gaming. Linux is great for p0rn, no virii!!

sounds like someone hasn't ever used macOS. because someone had, someone would be familiar with the *nix CLI. oh, and that someone would also realize that it's not that macOS is dumbed down, it's that most of the tweaks that other OS need are simply not necessary in an OS that already works properly.

i stopped using linux when i got a mac. ubuntu was the only thing keeping my old laptop running for more than 2 hours. once the power supply crapped out (for like the fifth time), i decided to get a mac. i actually don't think linux (ubuntu, at least) is bad at all for home use. but most of what i did was very simple.

the reality is that anything not windows still suffers from specialized software designed only for windows. there are fixes and workarounds, but usually what i'm doing is processor intensive and needs to run native.

A few cities I call on switched to linux when MS became a pain for their IT.

I understand there are several very good Linux programs for municipalities.
