Drake Harris: 'I Fit Somewhere Else'

  • DWags said...

You know, I don't follow recruiting, too old. However, reading that article, I'm uncomfortable about that young man. I don't know what it was. First extensive reading I've done on him, and Jack asked great questions. He's the guy, who "Love's MSU basketball and Tom Izzo" and "Loves U of M football" Step back and think about that. I won't write about this kid anymore, but if he was going to play basketball it was MSU. Football now possibly U of M. Football only, U of M. Now he says things like NC possibility etc.

I ask you, have you ever met somebody who is an MSU basketball fan and a U of M football fan? What do you think of them? Seriously. Anyway, my thoughts are always a kid should never commit his junior year. Things like this happen and kids change their mind. He's going to go to U of M, but our defensive backs and Dantonio and Narduzzi should handle anything that U of M can throw at us. We'll be fine. I just thought that after i read that article, I felt uncomfortable about the kid. He's not a Spartan, I don't know that I'm "happy" about that, but damn, I just don't care.

I've met those people. They are also Yankee fans (Tigers now), Cowboys fans (Patroits now), Bulls fans (Heat now). They are people that suck at life and need to latch onto the winning team to keep their heads up.

  • I don't have any problem with what the kid said. Despite what many of you want tobelieve, we are not national championship contenders. We could win the B1G any given year, but no way are we on par with teams like Alabama, USC, and the like. True, kids like Harris could get us there, but you can't blame him for wanting to play for a contender. I think this kids only mistake was committing to us very early - even before he made the decision not to play basketball. If he had never committed to us in the first place, the vitriol on this board would be much less. I will be rooting for him his entire career - unless he chooses UM.

Bad take. I'm not from the west side of the state but if you get a scholarship offer from Alabama, you can play - no doubt about it.

No need to degrade the kid's athletic ability. If you want to question his judgment or lack thereof, go to town.

Where did I degrade his athletic ability? He is a great athlete. He plays against some good athletes, but the good majority of players he lines up against will offer zero challenge for somebody with his athletic ability. His conference isn't exactly pumping out players who are big contributors on big time programs. His ego is being stroked, but he really has an uphill battle. He would have an uphill battle at MSU; just ask a former SEC wide receiver on the current MSU roster.

  • So this Is finally done, let's not be the same woe is me Spartan fans that a lot of posters on this board can be. So the kid decommited, he does not want to be here. Let's not bash him instead we should look forward to hopefully landing Watkins, Booth, or Snodgrass or some other young man we know nothing about, all of whom may or may not be better than Harris we don't no. The only thing that bothered me about the article was that he talked about the program as if it were beneath a player of his potential, other than that good luck young man; I look forward to the Spartan D getting after you wherever u may end up. Go Green Go White!!!!

  • I know Izzo has way more class than to do this (as well as more important things to do), but Izzo should contact the kid just to tell him what a coward he is for not contacting Coach D to tell him himself.

Cruising around other sites, one poster who seems to have pretty good info thinks that he is Bama bound and Saban was the one who told him he was "special" and just concentrate on football and winning NCs. Most of us believed this recruitment was over then and once Urbs paid a visit. It is the scUMers who are gonna take the hard fall as they are currently pissing themselves thinking they are getting Drale after multiple recent visits. Newsflash, the kid was there for the free tickets. The slurping for two weekends in a row was just icing on the cake.

So, if true, that would mean Izzo's committed recruit was talked out of playing college basketball by his "good friend" Nick Saban.

Side note: How can someone with Izzo's personality and genuineness remain friends with that lying robot?

  • Bollman effect. I kid, I kid.
As a Dantonio fan this is troubling to say the least. I've always admired Dantonio and his ability to get the most out of his players. I think it bodes well when you have at least half of the conference on a competitive level. Definitely sucks that a kid this talented decides to bolt (no matter how good the schools recruiting class may be). I hope he doesn't end up at ScUM.

Settle down people. I know it's not what we do, but come on. This is a 17/18 year old kid. He does not make his decisions based upon the same kind of life experiences that most of us do as adults. He does not always see the bigger picture. And even if he does - maybe his bigger picture doesn't include MSU. That's his prerogative. What we feel is best for him - and was best for us - might not necessarily be the truth. It's all subjective.

MSU has a great, up and coming football program led by great coaches and leaders of men. MSU is a great institution of higher education which shapes real life experiences and cultivates leaders and loyalty. No skin off of our back. Good luck to this young man. I hope that he reaches his full potential wherever he ends up.

    Agreed.

But I will criticize the parents. If that is my son I tell him "if you're not going to honor your commitment the first thing you need to do is call Mark Dantonio. He knows first and from you. You need to thank him for all the time and energy MSU spent recruiting you."

Is that too much too ask from parents these days?

  • I'm all over the place with this, but have multiple comments.

    1. Grow some and call the coach before you decommit.
    2. Try and show some class and stop running off at the mouth.
    3. I hope you go to a B10 school so that we can make your life a living hell.
    4. We'll be just fine without your ego!

    Go State!!

  • I don;t see scUM as a realistic option for him. He wants to live the pro lifestyle in college. I see it end up being Bama, OSU, USC, or FLA. He is going to go to one of the places that doesn;t even pretend its players are student athletes.

  • I've honestly never cared so little about a highly touted recruit decommitting. Some other ones in the past have hurt, but this one I basically have no concern over. Not mad. Just don't care.

Totally agree with what you said here!! (all of it) You can not be both ---but no big deal. I really don't care where he goes either but I do hope he NO longer comes to any of our b-ball games..etc... He is not a Spartan and does not want to be so go watch scUM or osu or whoever. And if he comes--- let him buy his own ticket and sit with everyone else--- not on the floor where the good seats are! We will survive without him !!

This...I cared for about 3 minutes after the Jabari Parker show. Now I really only care once they hit the field and make an actual difference.

    DontPunchBabies

  • guys it's simple, he wants to go someplace where he'll just be another WR on a long list of highly touted players. he may hardly see the field. judging from his comments he wants to go someplace where he feels a national championship will be handed to him instead of working his ass off and getting one where he would make the program/.

We don't need buckeye fans coming to the MSU board to "conversate" with us about our recruiting efforts or to talk about our program. Stay the hell in Ohio and go live in your trailer. Go to a Wolverine board since both of your programs are in bed with each other.

I've been curious about the decision to give up basketball in college. Do we really know who talked him out of it,,,,was it Meyer, Saban, family, friends,,,,or did Drake just make that decision on his own ?

Its pretty safe to say we had a firm commitment from this kid as a dual sport athlete, had he stuck with hoops. Not sure we're ever going to know exactly what happened with that plan.

CFB recruiting has gotten out of control...fans pay more attention to 18 year olds that haven't done jack and don't even wear the uniform.

All that matters to me are the kids that suit up in the green and white.

Till kids sign the letter I don't I give a crap.

  • It's sad when you've been following recruiting long enough, you can almost foresee bad scenarios happening for a kid. This kid seems to have the making for the classic 'thrives against lesser talent, believes the hype surrounding him, listens to the idea that he deserves to play at the best programs in the country, plays football down South, realizes its a lot different than Grand Rapids, doesn't get playing time he feels he deserves, transfers to smaller program to finish out career, and slides into obscurity.'

USC is a grease fire with Kiffin as HC. First school to be pre-season #1 and finish out of the top 25.

Talking National Championships is fine but you don't find them in Ann Arbor since 1997 and before that 1948.

If winning a National Championship is important 'Bama is the first on the list. Current coach has 4 and 3 of them in the last 4 seasons. Only place Harris will visit where the current coach has his own statue along side the other coaches who have won a total of 15 National Championships.

Urban Meyer has won 2 at UF and OSU has won 7. Harris should also visit Norman OK since the Sooners have won 9 and hit Gainesville because the Gators won 1 with Spurrier, 2 with Meyer.

All those programs have boosters lining up to give money for coaches salaries, staff and facilities. MSU is nice but not in the same orbit as 'Bama, Gators, Sooners or even Texas that seems to have it all except coaching right now.

Funny thing is that he will go to UF or Alabama and just be another guy on that roster. 5 star recruits out of Michigan are really like 3 star players in the south.

If he would choose Alabama I suspect Nick will play him. Many of us (me included) thought the same thing about Ingram Jr. when he went to Tuscaloosa. He wasn't buried, he was the first player to win a Heisman in that school's history.

I'm not saying Harris will be an instant success but when Saban ventures out of the typical SEC recruiting areas into places like MI those players often getting PT as starters. With the huge number of players in AL, GA, FL he thinks a player is special to go into MI, OH or PA.

I hope Drake Harris goes to Tuscaloosa. I even hope Saban and Izzo have a chat and Harris never faces a Big Ten team in the regular season. Like Ronald Johnson, if MSU couldn't sign him the best place for him was in another power conference.
