When is this awarded? He still has some ground to make up.

  • That's awesome.

I'm glad to see the AD office finally starting to tout our players to the national media.

I recall telling a friend a couple years ago that if Cam Newton had put up the stats that he did in 2010 at MSU, he wouldn't even have been invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremony, let alone win it by a record margin.

By getting our guys the recognition they deserve, it makes it easier for a phenom to picture himself doing the same at MSU.

Props to Draymond, he has earned everything he's gotten so far, and I think he'll collect some hardware for us, and for himself over the next few weeks.

    Rodeo Burger

  • even if we win the championship, it's still pretty slim odds for Draymond, since most of the ballots are due in before the post-season and he's in a distant third behind davis and robinson right now.

    Postradamus

  • I'd be stunned if Davis doesn't win it. Kid is getting better every game. Green is likely a 1st team AA, and that is a hell of an accomplishment.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

    rookmsu

  • Davis should win it, but Green should definitely get a lot of votes. Hell, the media loves the guy. I would not be shocked at all if he won it. Another monster performance on Sunday and some stand out performances in the BTT would help. I have no idea when the deadline for voting is though, so maybe those games won't be considered.

edit: wrong names and dates galore.

That's fair. This would still be a nice haul for Green:

    B1G POTY
    B1G Outright Champ*
    Consensus 1st Team AA
    Lowes Senior Class Award*
    Final Four Banner*
    NCAA Tourney Regional MVP*
    Final Four MVP*
    NCAA Champ*

*Things that are certainly possible, but will depend a lot on how well his teammates play.

It depends - there are like 6 different POY awards, with ballots due ranging from this weekend until after the tourney.

  • Did anyone think that this kid would ever be a BTPOY & All-American back when he was a freshmen? I loved the kid and though his ceiling was 7-8 pts a night as a 6th man.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

he won't beat out Anthony Davis AND Thomas Robinson. he's solidly third behind them. if it were a two-horse race maybe....but not this year. I think Davis has it locked up just because it's Kentucky - which blows.

    This.

I was a huge fan immediately. The passion he played with and effort he put forth was apparent, I just never saw him as a takeover a game / best player on the floor type guy. IMO, he's been the best player on the floor in a large majority of the games we've played this year. What he's become is absolutely stunning and a credit to the effort he's put in and his will to be the best.

I still doubt his future as an NBA player, but at the same time feel stupid for saying that. He's already proven a lot of people wrong with his accomplishments.

  • There was a short blog on ESPN this week where some "experts were polled" which included some interesting stats. Draymond came in third in the voting, but he is on the rise - from 5th to 3rd.

    Tempo-free stats from statsheet.com:

    - Davis: 137.6 offensive rating; 65.8 eFG percentage; 11.8 offensive rebound percentage; 22.3 defensive rebound percentage; 5.5 assist percentage; 2.8 steal percentage; 14.6 block percentage.

    - Robinson: 108.5 offensive rating; 53.6 eFG percentage; 10.7 offensive rebound percentage; 32.5 defensive rebound percentage; 12.7 assist percentage; 2.0 steal percentage; 3.8 block percentage.

    - Green: 108.8 offensive rating; 51.4 eFG percentage; 8.3 offensive rebound percentage; 26.8 defensive rebound percentage; 22.8 assist percentage; 2.8 steal percentage; 3.2 block percentage.

Magic Johnson was quoted last week as saying Green has a future in the nba. He says Green does too many things right not to be an nba player. Last mock draft I saw Green was all the way up to pick 20 by Philadelphia. No offense, but I am going to put a little more faith in what Magic has to say since he has been there, and done that. Not to mention he is one of the nba's greatest players ever.

But my question is, once Davis leaves Kentucky, gets drafted and is getting paid (or least can spend money and let it be known that he is getting paid), do you think he will do something about that eyebrow? You know, like go to a salon or barber shop and have them turn the one eyebrow into two? Just wondering. shrug

Green put up a triple-double in the NCAA tournament. When he did that, I had no doubt he would make an NBA roster. Like Magic says, Green's versatile skillset guarantees he gets a shot at the next level.

I'm really not trying to be a hater and of course Magic knows more about NBA potential then I ever will. What I was saying is that I have trouble imagining Day Day as a productive NBA player. Similarly, I never imagined Green would be a 15/10/3 type player in the Big Ten. He proved me wrong once and I won't be surprised if he proves me wrong again.

Obviously, I'll be rooting for him the whole way. I'd be much more inclined to watch random NBA games if the Dancing Bear made himself into a consistent contributor at the next level.

  • Yeah, it was hard to see his outside game developing and Ed Davis abused him in close, in the title game.

If Brian Cardinal was able to carve out an 11 year NBA career, there's no reason Day Day couldn't be productive in the NBA.

Am I the only person that thinks Draymond could be a Paul Millsap type player? Here's Millsap's NBA draft profile: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Paul-Millsap-299/. The measurables are pretty comparable. They're both about 6'6"-6'7" with 7' wingspans. Neither are incredibly athletic, but get by with their smarts and aggressiveness on the glass.

Be honest, did you even know Cardinal was in the league before the playoffs last year?

Good call, although Millsap has ups.

  • I think it's good that it appears Day Day is going to go late in the first round of the draft. That means he's going to be going to a team that already has a playoff nucleus and isn't going to depend on him to turn the franchise around. But staying out of the second round means that he won't get buried on the bench, or never signed (which often happens to 2nd rounders).

In the right kind of organization (I'm thinking a team like the Spurs, or the mid-00 Pistons, or maybe a team like the Thunder), I could see him becoming a key part of the team (probably not a starter, but maybe the 6th or 7th man). He's a smart player and has an incredible competitive drive.

That said, while I'd love to see him win some of the National POTY awards, I just don't think it's going to happen. IF all balloting was done after the tourney AND he led State to a title while dominating AND both UK and Kansas lost fairly early, I could see there being a possibility of it. But most of the awards are basically regular seasons MVP/most likely to go high in the NBA draft awards.

  • To me the coolest part of that whole postcard is the "once in a decade player".

For so many other coaches / programs, he's a once-in-a-lifetime player. Here he's just continuing the legacy.

Draymond reminds me a bit of Corliss Williamson, but with a better outside game.
