Duffy proposed an 8-team Playoff in 1966

  • Stewart Mandel just tweeted a link to this Milwaukee Journal article from November 1, 1966. Pretty interesting.

  • Read Duffy's autobiography. He devotes, IIRC, a chapter on it. I remember him saying it should be done by a "Blue Chip" committee and the money might be worth "a couple million dollars a year" (of course that was in like 1974 dollars lol)

  • Very interesting. Such a shame that man is not around today. Seemed like the grandfatherly type where you could sit around him and listen to his stories for hours (Jud, while more of a curmudgeon, would fall into this category as well, IMO).

If the NCAA had jumped on the idea at that time, playoffs would have been a LOT easier to achieve. Too much $$$ involved today to transition without megapain. Tradition does have value tho'.

You are correct sir. My grandmother gave me my grandpa's copy of "Duffy..." after he passed away. Just looked through it and that was pretty much exactly what he said.

  • I did have to laugh that he was upset that they waited until after the Rose Bowl to declare a champion. (Yes I get the times have changed, but still, it's not like that wasn't part of the same season.)

I would guess things were a little less corrupt back then.

  • Hey all that money helps the u.

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

    Everybody did it that way.

Wooden page forms with locks. Actual column forms. Metal type from a linotype. Blocks where pictures were stripped in.

Compared to now, it's like tapping chisels on rocks.

Less than a decade later, some places were changing to photo-based composition, but my last year in high school, we did it the old way. I actually appreciate having had to do it that way.

  • I proposed a 16 team playoff in 1986.

    And 1996.

    And 2006.

    And again today.

It was just a mistake; I didn't mean to let them take away my soul. Am I too old? Is it too late?

Yes and IMO every Spartan should read this. It is a great book and the man could tell stories. He would tell the players a joke before the game. I liked the story about him and Bear Bryant.

  • I'm not sure if it was related to this article, but I have a Sports illustrated from the late 60s buried somewhere in a box that said an eight-team NCAA football playoff was not favorable because the season would be too long and risk injuries. That scenario would have called for the national champion to play 13 games. Now, the national champion will play 15 games.

    This.

They were playing 10 regular season games then, so a playoff was possible. I don't like the 13th game being a conference title game, and I think conferences should be 10 teams and you should play everyone in your conference.

Now that we are where we are, play 3 non-conference games, 8 conference games, a conference championship and a 4 team playoff. Make the Bowl games part of the playoffs, rotating which 2 of the major bowls get the playoff each year, then have the winners meet in the National Title Bowl. That keeps the total to 14 games for the title contenders and 13 for everyone else which is the total most BCS schools have now. This allows for a playoff, and only adds 1 extra game for the title contenders.

The four major bowls play on 1/1, and the title game is a week later. All the other bowls are 12/31 or prior.

    You do realize that
    A. Lower divisions play full large playoffs and a team can play 16-17 games.
    B. Most schools are dismissed between the 2nd weeken in December and the 2nd Weekend in Jan.
    C. The BCS MNC was player on Jan 9th already?
