MAC level newspaper layout. Then again, Adobe Illustrator makes that a piece of cake, so can't really fathom how they did that back in the day.

I'm not sure if it was related to this article, but I have a Sports illustrated from the late 60s buried somewhere in a box that said an eight-team NCAA football playoff was not favorable because the season would be too long and risk injuries. That scenario would have called for the national champion to play 13 games. Now, the national champion will play 15 games.

This.
They were playing 10 regular season games then, so a playoff was possible. I don't like the 13th game being a conference title game, and I think conferences should be 10 teams and you should play everyone in your conference.
Now that we are where we are, play 3 non-conference games, 8 conference games, a conference championship and a 4 team playoff. Make the Bowl games part of the playoffs, rotating which 2 of the major bowls get the playoff each year, then have the winners meet in the National Title Bowl. That keeps the total to 14 games for the title contenders and 13 for everyone else which is the total most BCS schools have now. This allows for a playoff, and only adds 1 extra game for the title contenders.
The four major bowls play on 1/1, and the title game is a week later. All the other bowls are 12/31 or prior.
