Columnist Jack Ebling looks at why MSU finds itself below .500 needing a win at Minnesota next week to become bowl eligible.

There's always golf, skiing, etc. it's what I did during the muddy years. I never paid attention to football. I'm getting close to that again and so are a lot of people I know.

I blame it on the score boards.

so after back-to-back 11 win seasons, 1 year in the shitter gets you close to the level of not caring again?

  • Did we actually have a player lose a pass in the sun yesterday....the ball landed 2 yards from his feet and he never made motion to try and catch it.

    He's not the only one...

and if Dantonio doesn't address the 'Roushar situation', then it's time to look at the head coach as the problem.

Then that means he cost us a national title, because with a competent oc, this team wins it all.

  • What is so confounding is this team never improved from the first game of the season to yesterday.

The game against Minnesota is a must win, not for the bowl game, but for the 15 extra practices. Something the entire team starting with the coaching staff to the players truly needs.

Yep. He was standing there with no one 15 yards around him. banghead

I agree! And maybe Dantonio should address the problem of why his team has become choke central.

I actually think the back to back 11 win seasons made it worse. There is no excuse for having a top 10 defense and needing week 12 to get to .500... despite the inexperience and injuries to the offensive line. To lose the number of games, in the fashion that we've lost them, with the volume of (what I would consider to be) pissed away possessions, and late game coaching brain farts (lets punt some more!) its doubly frustrating. I totally get why some fans might not want to get so emotionally invested after the season has gone the way its gone. When you see the opportunity for a 10-1 season and are instead starting down 5-6... you lose a lot of hope.

If there has been no improvement in all those practices between game 1 and game 11, then 15 more opportunities to continue doing whatever it is that they've been doing at those practices seems to be a bad idea.

Sit home, erase this season, and start fresh in the Spring.

Let me just say this: It's not fair to put all of the blame on Maxwell, but at the same time, looking ahead to next season, I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I think of him leading this offense.

He needs to be surrounded by a great OL and more playmakers. Even then, he just becomes a "game manager". A 5th year Sr. as a game manager.....YUCK.

  • I really think we need a new offensive line coach. They were just plain terrible, even with injuries. We have heard Jack Allen was the greatest thing and he was as bad as Dan france in run blocking. Roucher needs to go also.

Maxwell has some very bad habits. He gets happy feet before he throws... he stutters around and starts patting the ball. I blame his accuracy issues on this. It looks to me like a confidence issue. I'm confident he's coached otherwise and, like cousins and his damn back foot throws, resorts to bad habits under pressure.

I don't mind Maxwell as a game manager, but you see how we do things. We come with a balanced attack, Bell is picking up solid yards, and then we go PASS DEEP, PASS DEEP, PASS DEEP, PUNT after a first down and the entire stadium is left shaking their heads. You don't do that with a game manager. But the one time it looked like Maxwell was going to go out there and make something happen, he threw 3 interceptions (first half against BSU) and ever since then he's been a less aggressive QB. Well shit, only one of those INTs were his fault (accuracy issue).

The two things that give me (helpless) hope for the next season... we *should* return all of our offensive talent save for McDonald. We'll get our Center and RT back... maybe Clark will overtake France at LT... Allen will be better at LG, and who knows, maybe Nate Klatt or Kruse or somebody takes the reigns at RG. Maybe we get a real running game with a 1-2 punch option rather than relying on one guy to carry all the load. Maybe Sims comes back and can stay healthy. Maybe the WR's get much better in the off season. Maybe Muma turns out to be a better kicker than Conroy (makes you wonder why he never got a shot though doesn't it?)

Maybe Coach D gets his aggressive if not reckless streak back.... with the schedule the way it is, we could be looking to get back to 11 wins.

Minus the back to back 11 wins, this season is a lot like the 1998 season.

I propose a new rule when evaluating MSU olines. Take the top 8 lineman, then remove 3 of the top 4. Now evaluate.
