ESPN: Should MSU/Wisconsin Align against the Old Guard?

    Certainly an interesting idea

Should MSU, Wisconsin align vs. old guard? - Big Ten Blog - ESPN

Pinpointing the balance of power in the Big Ten these days is no easy task. Wisconsin has appeared in the past two Rose Bowls. Michigan State is enjo

  • oddly enough when Tressel was in Columbus it wasn't bad for MSU. One got the impression MSU was often a good #2 when Tressel didn't have room for anymore Ohio kids.

  • How the hell can two football teams "align" against other football teams??

    What a stupid premis.

  • I do like the "Christmas Colors Alliance" as a name for the duo lol

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Basically reinforces the notion that recruiting has become a second football season that's won/lost on much more... uh... malleable terms than 60 minutes on a Saturday.

You promote the rivalry as a coach, have your players talk it up, etc.

Key thing for MSU - Wisky is that it's an organic rivalry, unlike the Land Grant cluster_#*$&. I was thinking about this the other day; realistically MSU or WI could be the Big 10 champs in '12 and '13, which would mean the 2 teams either won or shared the title for 4 straight years.

Interesting to think about, but we'll see how it plays out on the field.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

How much of a tool does Bielema look like in that picture?

Marriage is like flying with kids, if the flight had 500 connections, never ended, Ted Striker were your pilot and you ate the fish.

  • Interesting points throughout the story but I agree that its premise is a bit odd. There's nothing really possible by way of alignment other than rooting interest, and I don't see Spartan fans lining up to support Bielema anytime soon. The question of sustained success without the headline-grabbing recruiting classes is a timeless debate and so far neither program has displayed any indication of slowing down.

As far as the MSU-Wisconsin rivalry, unless we meet again in the B1G CG, the Badgers will be off our schedule until 2017 I believe.

  • Does it really matter if MSU-UW align? I don't really get it. The media will continue to fluff Ohio State and Michigan because that's what they have always done.

MSU can only control itself, and finally MSU is trending forward and has stability. If it means the media talks about us more, great. If they choose to focus on the "old guard", well it's their loss.

It would start with a protected schedule - same as UM/OSU. Then crank up some hype.

The writer got one thing correct - the best games in the B1G over the last two seasons have been the Wisky/MSU match up.

Push ESPN gameday to show up in Madison on October 27. Make this matchup matter.

That's correct; really, it makes sense for MSU - WI to be the protected rivalry. MSU - IU and WI - Minny doesn't do much, other than guarantee a W on the schedule (as things stand now).

At the same time, when the alignments were being discussed, MSU didn't have the success to merit much consideration; Iowa was the "3rd best" team in the Legends. State has vaulted Iowa since then.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Wisconsin would never leave their protected Minnesota rival.

Media just follows the money. OSU/UM fans and the programs bend over and lick each other's balls, so it drives interest, which drives ratings, which drives coverage, which drives promotion.

MSU and Ohio State should swap divisions truthfully. But scUM and tOSU threw such a fit with this whole division thing that they made their own game less relevant. lol

We could loan them Gholston and a couple others on Nov 10 when we have an off week. I'm sure that would do it.
