ESPN: Should MSU/Wisconsin Align against the Old Guard?

  • It's too bad that there's a 4 year hiatus between MSU and Wiscy right when the rivarly was really starting to heat up. Makes me wonder if it wouldn't be worthwhile to play them in the noncon just to keep the animosity / mutual respect whatever going.

    Upcoming nonconf for MSU
2013 WMU, USF, Youngstown St, ND
2014 Jacksonville St, at Oregon, Eastern Mich, + 1 open slot
2015 Oregon, CMU, at WMU (ugh), + 1 open slot

What's the precedent for this? I can't remember a team ever scheduling a conference opponent in the non-conference slots... it might not even be allowed, but if it is, I would lobby for a home/away with Wisconsin in 2014 and

For reference, Wisconsin's 2014 and 2015 nonconf schedules are:

2014 at Wash St, Bowling Green, + 2 open
    2015 Wash St, + 3 open

Obviously leaves them a lot of room for fluff, but they might be willing to pick up a sure loss against MSU to promote the rivalry

I was at a party in Ann Arbor this past weekend. Do you know who who my buddy (who also goes to MSU) and I had the biggest problem with there? Not any of the UM students there, it was a Wisconsin fan.

When we talked to him about how the games have been close between both schools, the guy said it's because their coaching is so much better loco I literally laughed in the guys face.

Nice to see you were able to get out. I understand you had to work an ENTIRE weekend a few weeks back and then your boss screwed you ?

i can say for certain (as a buckeye fan), um and osu have no "alignment"...

Baloney. It may not be spoken, but it has existed as part of an effort to keep the Big 2, Little 8 set-up.

    How can two teams "align"?

I admitted wanting to meet them when they are undefeated (selfish reasons), but what can either school do to ensure osu/um dominance in the conference?

btw, just for you, Beardy...proper caps

This answers your questions in several cases. Specifically when both Michigan and Ohio State went after MSU for violating the formerly official rule of not actively recruiting football players from Ohio.

I could only read the basic description...

And, if true, I agree that was wrong.

However, that was sixty (or so) years ago, and those old diehards and that kind of thinking is antiquated and has no place in the sport.

I highly doubt that kind of thing could go on today...

With the advent of the B1G network and expanded bowl games it behooves the league to refrain from a big 2 little 10 type of conf.

    Thank you.

Anyway, Michigan continued to lobby against MSU even after thier addmittance into the B1G in terms of funding and such. It wasn't until Crazy President Lee Bollinger and Buttoned Up Presidetn M. Peter did both schools realize that they were better off working together academically than to continue to spend money lobbying against each other. This was in the mid to late 1990's.

Now I know why you hate each other!

Makes the old tale about Woody Hayes refusing to buy gas in Mich. and opting to push his car across the boarder less compelling...(albeit a tall tale I imagine)

Does it really matter if MSU-UW align? I don't really get it. The media will continue to fluff Ohio State and Michigan because that's what they have always done.

MSU can only control itself, and finally MSU is trending forward and has stability. If it means the media talks about us more, great. If they choose to focus on the "old guard", well it's their loss.

College football coverage is crazy. It literally took 15 years of success for anyone nationally to even bother talking about Oregon as a program. They've been the best program in the last 20 years in the pac-12, yet ESPN still blows USC every chance they can.

Let me get this down, $100 million. Oh wait, I have a better idea. Instead of $100 million, how about I send you a hobo's dick cheese?

As far as the MSU-Wisconsin rivalry, unless we meet again in the B1G CG, the Badgers will be off our schedule until 2017 I believe.

This. It'd be hard to build this up anymore if we don't play them for 4 years.

It was much less than 60 years ago and continued until very recently.

Did you know that this past year was the first time the Big 10 changed it's scheduling practices and MSU didn't have to play in Ann Arbor two years in a row?

Wait, what? We haven't played in Ann Arbor two years in a row since 1967 and 1968. Where am I reading this wrong?

I read your post and was so confused. I just went to the Paul Bunyan Trophy Wikipedia page. It has all the games and their locations since the the two teams played for the trophy.

At the same time, when the alignments were being discussed, MSU didn't have the success to merit much consideration; Iowa was the "3rd best" team in the Legends. State has vaulted Iowa since then.

Until MSU vaults Iowa significantly in recruiting, then I see the two programs volleying back and forth in the near future. Iowa is reinvigorated with a new coaching staff and currently has a top 25 recruiting class according to Rivals.

I don't see Iowa competing for a Big Ten championship is the next couple years. I do; however, see Michigan State.
