ESPN to do a new "30 for 30"

HBO did Loyola/Miss State back in 2001. Great documentary.

    What happened?

  • Two MSU-based 30 for 30 documentaries I want to see:

1.) The Flintstones. It's a way better story than the Fraud Five, and they actually won a championship.

2.) Amp Campbell. As Kirk Herbstreit said during the broadcast, "you couldn't write a better script."

Might be too early at this point, but someday this will make a tremendous doc.

Yeah this story may not be over yet...

  • I never saw it. Is there a title, maybe it's in Netflix or something.

Basically the Gov and Mississippi State police was heavily enforcing the jim crow state law that prevented state teams from playing teams with African American players on thei roster. Loyola Chicago had 4 AA starters. The Gov forbid the Miss St. Team from traveling to EL to play a second round game v. ULC and ordered the State Police to make sure they did not leave te state. The team used costumes and even had a "dummy" team made up to sneak out of Mississippi and defy the Gov/State Police to play the game. They put up a good fight but ultimately lost to the heavily favored ULC team by 10.

ULC went on the play and beat Cincy in the National Chanpionship game. Cincy started 3 AA. It was the first NC game where the majority of the participants were AA.

I'd watch a Bo Jackson 30 for 30 a half dozen times even if it were just 60 minutes of highlight film.

I agree. Bo was such a bad ass. A total freak in 2 pro sports.

Nobody would really watch either of those. Not much interest.

  • When I was in school I believe ESPN did something like "the game that changed the game" on the '79 championship (15 year anniversary).

They followed it with replays of the full game, which was the first time "I seen it" (ode to yesterday's thread).

Searching on my phone produced little.

Yeah but of the ones that have already been made, more than a few had little public interest. But once they were aired, a lot of people watched them.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

  • How about a future episode entitled "Little Brother" detailing the reversal of the balance of power in the bitter football rivalry between Michigan State and Michigan?

It should be called Go Green/Go Blue

It would be just like Roll Tide/War Eagle

That actually would probably be a good one...can take a Pope forgiving his assasin type angle.

Plus AG's career path after that game adds depth to the story. An admitted bad call robbed a player our of his one chance at Baseball immortality. Almost in a moonlight graham type sense.

I'd call it "Perfect in Imperfection"

Did anyone really give a fuck about the Baltimore Colts marching band or Andres Escobar? People watch the documentaries because they want to learn more about a cool and relatively untold story in sports.

  • They won't be relegated to just when ESPN was around according to Bill Simmons today:

"If the first series celebrated ESPN's first 30 years, then the second series will celebrate the storytelling form — not just with 30 new sports documentaries from 30 filmmakers (which won't just be confined to that 1979-2009 time frame this time, by the way), but our new "30 for 30 Shorts" web series that premieres monthly on Grantland starting today."

Another 30 films on the subjects and stories that have captured our attention - Grantland

Today marks the launch of the next phase of the award-winning sports documentary franchise.

I have a hunch that before much longer, it will be the rise and fall and resurgence of Tiger Woods.

Of course, we all have our downfall at the end.

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

Of course, you think ESPN would say anything negative about Valvano? I think they should do one about the Villanova team that won it all rather than NC State.

As long as they include the Nova player that was high during the game

I think with 30 for 30s it is not so much what they want but who comes to them with ideas/ passion projects. No one in ESPN production said "Hey, lets do one on Terry Fox", but Steve Nash came to them and said he wanted to do it.

If Magic went to ESPN and said he wanted to do something MSU related I am sure they'd listen. Same if Sam Raimi came to ESPN and said he wanted to do one on the '68 Tigers or something.

Also, note that since the original 30 for 30 they have strayed a few times from the "within the last 30 years" requirement

Well in that case, I would love to see one on the integration of college football. Duffy played a central role in the process, and the 1956 Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl are amazing stories.

The 10-10 tie would also make an amazing documentary, but it might be more suited to one of the short films rather than a full documentary.

  • I'd like to see one about how Tony George's IRL split from CART ruined open wheel racing in the US and led to the rise of NASCAR.
