ESPN to do a new "30 for 30"

Did anyone really give a fuck about the Baltimore Colts marching band or Andres Escobar? People watch the documentaries because they want to learn more about a cool and relatively untold story in sports.

The Two Escobar's one was great.

It was phenomenal. But can you honestly say that you gave more than half a shit about Andres Escobar before you saw that documentary?

it was a major story here considering he was shot after an own goal against the US during the US held World Cup. Anyone who watched that tournament with any interest remembered that.

I don't understand your point. I have to care about something before I can watch it and enjoy it?

I'd like to see one about how Tony George's IRL split from CART ruined open wheel racing in the US and led to the rise of NASCAR.

Oh my God. Yeah! This is what I would most like to see, ESPN or not.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

  • The Flintstones could be incredible. Start it off with the car wreck with Cleaves that started that downfall of michigan and Michigan State taking over the state of Michigan. There are a lot of angles they could take with that one, but I highly doubt it ever happens.

Not many people outside of MSU fans would be overly interested in that. You and I would watch it, but Bammer fan, U Fan, Orangebloods fan would have little to no interest.

If there is ever one involving MSU basketball, it would be on Magic and Bird. But because HBO did one a couple years ago, and ESPN just did a special on Magic...it's not going to happen.

Perhaps contradictory. It would depend on how well the story is executed and how well it is marketed within the 30 for 30 parameters.

No, you don't, which is the point I was trying to make originally. People are arguing that no one would be interested in a Flintstones 30 for 30. I'm saying that doesn't matter, because it's an interesting story and people are going to watch it whether or not they cared about it before.

Again too straight forward. Focus on cleaves alone is enough drama. Hell, im sure the ed martin story is worthy enough, too bad he's not around though.

I think the point is despite how much we love the Flintstones, it's probably not a big enough story for a national audience. The two Escobars featured a drug cartel, world cup soccer, a choke job by a great team, and the murder of a player as a result. That is a WAY more enticing story line than some college hoops players out of Flint that took what was already a solid program to a NC. There are probably a bunch of stories just like the Flintstones scattered throughout the sporting world.

After watching what happened on Sunday morning, I would love to see one about this past season in the English Premeir League.

Everyone over there called it the greatest season it has ever had.

Yeh, that would be awesome. Cricket seems like a pretty cool sport from what I've seen on TV

  • How about how Art Schlichter? How the hell di he loose so much money so quickly? Nobody can gamble sporting events losing so badly. He must of lost 80% of the bets he made. I think he got drafted pretty high in the NFL and only developed his gambling habits.

Wow you have no real knowledge of sports history, do you? Those have mass appeal, do you think some early 1980's bust is interesting?

  • Dan Gable should get one.

-3 time Iowa High School State Champ

-His Sister was brutality raped and murdered by one of his classmates.
Gable later recalled that the event gave him a singular passion for wrestling as a way to uplift his shattered family. In his documentary Gable, said, "I needed to give them enough entertainment that they didn't have to look other places."

-2 time NCAA Champion at Iowa State (181-1) Lost his last match.

-1972 Gold Medalist (*Didn't give up a single point*)

    -Coaching (355-21-5)
    21 straight Big Ten titles
    17 NCAA National titles

It would be safe to say he deserves a 30 for 30 slot.

  • I'm really looking forward to "Benji" which is part of the new slate of 30 for 30's. It's about Ben Wilson who played for Simeon High in Chicago and was, tragically, murdered during his senior year of high school. I heard Sonny Vaccarro on the radio, recently, talking about what a talent Wilson was. Vaccarro said he was, basically, Tracy McGrady in size and skill. The kid was pretty unknown until the summer before his senior year when he blew up in the camp circuit.

The film played at Tribeca this year and got some really great reviews.

  • Few ideas that I hadn't seen mentioned.

-Barry Sanders walking away from football.

-The Mike Leach/Texas Tech/Craig James debacle. Not that ESPN would ever air it, unless it was done by Craig James.

-Craig James and his refuse to answer for the 5 dead hookers when he was at SMU.

Agreed. The storyline is a no-brainer fit for the 30 on 30 series.

That's funny. Former NFL quarterback blows life away gambling. I guess you're right, the NFL isn't too big. However, soccer has huge appeal as well as cheating in the former SWC. SWC stood for "sure we cheat conference." I say wow that you say wow. Do you remember Art on the cover of several SI magazines? Gambling by professional sports athletes is probably not much news to you. The can't miss running back forgot to play a lot of games in the NFL because he was lazy. That is a way better story than gambling. Your response reveals your stupidity.
