Earl was realistic about the capabilities of players on his roster. He wasn't focused on righty vs. lefty matchups like some managers. He would bat Mark Belanger in the 2nd spot of the lineup against certain pitchers he hit well. Of course, most of the time Belanger down in the lineup.
Jim Northrup spent 1975 in Baltimore, and he said without a doubt was that Earl was the best manager he played for in his career.

I agree.......Earl was from a different generation and wasn't preoccupied with remaining "politically correct". Look at the way he treated Jim Palmer. Many managers would have coddled Palmer, but something with those two just never clicked. I think Dave McNally was the pitcher he thought highest of through the years even though Palmer had the better numbers.
