Family gathers with ailing Detroit boxing icon Emanuel Steward | Other Sports | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Steward nurtured and guided the likes of Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty and Milton McCrory to world titles in the 1980s at the Kronk Gym on McGraw in Detroit. He has been hospitalized since September and underwent surgery for what his sister called diverticulitis, a stomach disorder.

  • Man I really liked that guy - I only wish he told Hearns not to slug it out with Haggler.

  • I talked to Manny after the Thomas Hearns-Doug DeWitt fight in Detroit in 1986. Hearns was at that time lobbying for a rematch with Marvin Hagler. He had previously suffered a broken right hand during first Hagler fight, which was a bit of a double edged sword. It gave him an excuse for the loss to Hagler, having lost his main weapon in the middle of a slugfest, but at the same time it would diminish his market value for a potential rematch if it would be expected to happen again. That evening in Cobo Hall, Hearns clearly re-injured his hand around the end of the third round trying to finish DeWitt with repeating right hand bombs. Having failed to KO DeWitt before the bell sounded, Hearns was forced to box from the outside while relying almost exclusively on the left hand and spent most of the rest of the night in retreat, winning a tough decision while suffering cuts around both eyes. After the fight I was walkng around down on the floor near the ring and right next to Emanuel Steward. I said "Hi, Manny!", and he very pleasantly greeted me. I then asked him if Tommy had broken his hand during the fight. Steward gave me an icy stare, muttered, "No" and stormed off. It was obvious he was trying to cover up the story. To this day I am proud of the fact that Emanuel Steward actually cared about what I had noticed and didn't want anyone picking up on what I had seen. After the fight, I scoured about a half dozen reports on the fight in various boxing mgazines and newspapers. Only one had reported that Hearns had obviously reinjured his hand. Word of Hearns' reinjured hand failed to spread. Although the rematch with Hagler never materialized, it was because of Sugar Ray Leonard's comeback, not because of Hearns' oft injured right hand. RIP, Manny. You'll be missed.

I was going to jump on the OP for inappropriate usage of the "bad spelling" meme by using it in an obituary thread.

    But apparently not.
